Gotham Season 2
« on: September 22, 2015, 01:21:28 AM »

I think it's off to a pretty good start.

Spoiler for Hidden:
Erin Richards, the actress playing Barbara, seems to be having MUCH more fun playing crazy.

Spoiler for Hidden:
Bruce Wayne had a growth spurt ... and he seems to be a better actor too.

All in all, I think the show is looking up.

I was a staunch defender of the show in season 1, but the season two premier has me seriously questioning if I want to keep giving it my suddenly full tv time. There were aspects of it that I liked but

Spoiler for Hidden:
One of the things I liked most about the show was Jim Gordon. He had a chip on his shoulder, he stepped on the line - that was not stepping on the line last night.  That was a felony. I know that he knows it, and I know it's going to kill his relationship with Lee, but it's a little far for the classic 'the ends justify the means' storyline for my tastes. If they'd written themselves into a corner so deep that getting rid of Loeb could only be accomplished by a favor from Penguin they at least could have had it be a favor more in line with the character - like saving Penguin from a deal gone bad (again), arresting one of Penguin's enemies who considered themselves untouchable with Falcone gone, etc.

Alfred is still one of my favorite things about the show, though, and Barbara is more enjoyable insane (as long as they don't do something stupid like try and make her Harley Quinn).

Spoiler for Hidden:
So Bruce spends months researching his dad's company, the mob, property rights, etc. but can't be bothered to at least try his/his mother's birthday and his parents' anniversary on the keypad before going off to research how to make dynamite? The bits where they try to show his rage/frustration seem really forced (almost to star wars 2-3 anakin levels).

Was really hoping the hokey portrayal of the Riddler's madness was a one-off but I guess not.

I like Jerome.  From IMDB it doesn't look like he will be in many episodes this season but I like him.  It doesn't matter if he is the person who will eventually become Joker or not, he makes a good Joker archetype.

I like seeing James Frain in any role so it's good to have him as a major player.

Spoiler for Hidden:
But the thing that made me happiest was that the stairs didn't lead to the future Batcave but rather just one small room.  Some things should never be brought into the series until perhaps the final episode and that is a major one.

It was a disconcerting start to the new season for me.  Jim Gordon went too much off-character for my taste...

That said, when the Evil Mastermind assembled his little collection of Arkham inmates, did anyone else immediately think Royal Flush Gang?

Spoiler for Hidden:
My wife detests this show - to much swearing, too much violence - so she doesn't usually pay attention to it if I'm hogging the main tv to watch it.  She does have a little game, though, where she asks me 'who do they become?' because we watched Nolan's trilogy together and like most people of our age group she saw a few reruns of the old Batman tv show growing up.

Last night she said 'He becomes the Joker.' Zero question marks.

I said 'At this point it would kind of be a shame if he didn't' .  I wonder how many times Jerome's actor watched Ledger's performance before shooting this season?

Even if he doesn't (and it would be really odd at this point if he doesn't), I'm really loving how the character is taking shape.

I'm also liking batshit crazy ex-girlfriend Barbara better than the Barbara we first met.  Too bad they waited so long to get her there.

This is one of those rare occasions when I'm annoyed at having to wait for the episode to hit the streaming app.

Given what her role was like last season, I'm sure that Erin Richards is enjoying this season much more.

Just wondering how they're going to negotiate her winding up as Gordon's wife after all this.
Spoiler for Hidden:
Of course they just killed his second wife so they're not exactly in continuity on that front I suppose.

I absolutely love Jerome.  The kid is pulling off the perfect balance between the Ledger and Hamill Jokers.

And at the same time I'm sorry he is in this series because a couple of years down the road he would be a perfect movie version of the Joker.  But there is no way he will ever get that role because studios are notoriously phobic about putting a character from a television series into the same or similar role in the movies.  My hope is he stays around for a few seasons as a recurring character.

Watched this week's episode last night and had my mind go sideways for a moment. The villains in disguise, acting as the entertainment in a charity thing full of Gotham's rich folk, and then everyone's trapped at the villains' mercy. This could easily have been the script for an episode of the '60s Batman show, minus the bright colors and adorned with modern sensibilities. I could almost see Cesar Romero chortling away on that stage. It was indeed a different flavor for this show, while still being the show we've known all along. Gotham visited by lunacy & absurdity. And Jerome's actor was nailing it 95% of the time. I saw flashes of the animated Mr. J, Nicholson, Ledger, and original bits, all melded together very well. What a waste.  >:(

Spoiler for Hidden:
I was shocked by Alfred's showdown with Cat. Even more shocked that she'd listen to him.

You'd also think
Spoiler for Hidden:
that Penguin would have had his mother watched.

Still liking Barbara's scenes but she needs more to do other than make out with other women and suggestively eat a popscicle.
