I know it's a "standing joke on the internet". But since several of my friends are the butt of your "standing joke", after a while it stops being funny and starts being mean. I think I'm just completely exhausted with people being mean, and I've decided that I'm going to point it out early on, when it's just a "standing joke" and it can be handled with a friendly reminder that the people you're joking about have feelings too, instead of letting it get to the point where it has to be handled with open letters to the gaming community or something. :)

So again, friendly reminder. If you want to get defensive about it and insist that you should be allowed to be mean to people without getting criticized for it, well...maybe take a step back and ask yourself why you want that right before you respond again? I don't really want this to become a big deal, but I'm not going to say that no, it's okay for these people to be the butt of everyone's jokes just for liking a TV show you don't.

I am so confused by this statement. FloatingFatMan was never defensive (if you think dude it's a joke defensive, it is not, its a statement. Granted it's his justification for saying the joke, but that is all it is a joke) Right now you seems to be the defensive one, and so far other people have been having fun with the statement. Essentially when you try lecturing someone on the internet, this comes to mind.

If he wants to have a problem with it, let him.  Doesn't bother me at all, it's hardly important.  I made a joke, he didn't find it funny. It happens.

Saying "lighten up, it was just a joke" is a defensive comment. Not an angry or abusive one, but it's essentially saying, "The problem is yours for not enjoying my comment, not mine for making it." That's defensive, in that it is a defense of the statement. Hence the word "defensive". :)

Also lumped in with his statement under "defensive" would be statements along the lines of, "Oh, well that's just the Internet for you, and there's no use in trying to change people's behavior, so don't bother because it's a waste of time." (Which is a rough paraphrase of your comment--if you feel that I'm paraphrasing unfairly, feel free to say so.) I don't believe it is a waste of time, because I think that FFM, like everyone in this community, is a good person who will listen to reason and who is kind and considerate of other people. I will admit, I'm holding people here to a higher standard than I maybe would 4Chan, but I also believe that people here can and will live up to it when asked. I believe in the people here. And if I'm wasting my life in doing that, well...it's mine to waste.

Come now, this definitional-usage shift from "defensiveness" to "rebuttal" is a bit much...

Have you ever watched - In Living Color?

They insulted EVERYONE. This age of political correctness is getting silly. If you do not find someone funny - send them a PM and they may reply or delete it. You can't walk around in life just looking to be offended. I do medieval martial arts hitting people with weapons for fun - some people think that is insane. Cultivate a thicker skin and your blood pressure will thank you for it.

I don't speak for anyone else here, but I frequent 4chan.

I find it very progressive in some areas.
Anyhow, do we have anything new regarding this deal? I've been waiting and watching hoping for some kind of press release, but so far just that thing on Massively.

Shadowe

Just for general consumption:

FFM can come across as abrasive. But seriously, he never means it if it's said in public.

I know this because I once directly called him a "pompous t**t" on his very own IRC server (or was it an email? I forget, now).

I was wrong to do so, because I was operating under a false assumption at the time.

And you know what? He didn't censure me for it. I doubt it endeared me to him, but there was no comeback, no revenge, no booting me off his server (which I was fully expecting).

He's got a really big heart, and while he will unashamedly state his opinions about how the world should be, he will never seriously expect anyone to conform to his ideas if they differ.

Sure, the internet isn't a great place to share his humour and opinions, especially given how touchy people can get (including me!) about their pet favourite things.

But I flat-out guarantee you that if you assume attempt at humour first, serious attempt to modify behaviour waaaaaaaaaaaaaay after, you'll have a good chance of enjoying FFM's presence in a discussion.
The wisdom of Shadowe: Ghostraptor: The Shadowe is wise ...; FFM: Shadowe is no longer wise. ; Techbot_Alpha: Also, what Shadowe said. It seems he is still somewhat wise ; Bull Throttle: Shadowe was unwise in this instance...; Rock_Powerfist: in this instance Shadowe is wise.; Techbot_Alpha: Shadowe is very wise *nods*; Zortel: *Quotable line about Shadowe being wise goes here.* FFM: I think you're mostly wise in this instance, apart from one part.

I was the subject of a trolling thread on Something Awful after I broke up with my ex and I have a triple amputee suing me because he is convinced I am a master Facebook troll who runs over 40 fake accounts. Hard to top that.

More than anything if you just revert the rules to pre i13 pvp rules; no Diminish Returns, no travel suppression when attacked, -speed powers actually work, and controls mechanism works like before. Pre i13, mezes work only if you break the mez protection threshold. For example if someone pops a break free, it would take 3 controller holds and 2 domination hold to go through the BF. A person would need to fast calculate how many holds are stacked on them and pop bfs accordingly so you won't run out of BFs too fast and all the same time trying killing your opponent (takes some brain work xD) Post i13 mez system is mez protection is worthless. Every non controller/dominator hold will hold you for 2 seconds, controller/dominator hold will hold you for 4 seconds and a domination hold will hold you for 6. This is very dumb, not because it is so simplified, but basically makes anyone who uses offensive toggles (/rad, /dark, ice control/, etc) pretty much worthless and ironically instead of broadening the types of FotM, it consolidates it.

I guess if you put it on paper it may look good, but when the pvp community who actually tested this and told Castle this idea is stupid, but still implemented it, to me that's one guy telling the entire community go screw themselves. I know how to play your game better than you even though the only reason most of you still sub to the game with multiple accounts was just for the PvP and all you do is play for the PvP. Also the PvP community were the ultimate bug finders and testers because we literally tried to find every exploit in the game. Not just the powers but farming methods too. An example would be using a lvl 43 bridge in a 8 man actually got a lvl 1 to lvl 20 in 1 run lvl 20 to lvl 30 in about 3 runs lvl 30 to lvl 40 in about 7 runs and lvl 40 to lvl 50 in 20 runs <- notice the spike in how many runs you need after lvl 40 because the bridge rule didn't work to well in the latter end, estimated toon lvl 1-50 was achieved in 36 hours. Another exploit was the snake-be-gone where you could get a toon to 1-50 in less than 5 hours.

If any request in PvP, just make it dynamic again. Honestly there was and still now no other PvP combat system that was as dynamic as CoX. Castle tied to implement a system where everyone could have a chance to win, but it ended up with noone winning. What's the old saying, you try pleasing everyone, you will end up pleasing noone

This guy knows what's up.

Oh man In Living Colors brings back memories. I was 6 when that show came out. PC seems crazy now in days. Back even before I was born the King could get away with making a movie like "Blazing Saddles" (One of my all time favorite because of the satirical element and witty humor. Plus the jokes were written by Richard Pryor) Back when I was kid though you had to tone it down from "Blazing Saddles", you still had "In Living Colors", Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, etc that were very edgy but enjoyable if you take everything in the context of what was described. Now for some reason over sexualazation and violence is more accepted as long you don't hurt someone's feelings (don't get me wrong I like them all, just seems weird that the first is accepted more than the latter.) I wonder if Hommie would play that?

As long as the rest of us PVE players don't have to venture into PVP zones to get goodies like Shivan Shards or Nukes, I'm in favor of giving the PVP players whatever they want.  :)

I'll be honest with you (I think I actually posted this awhile back) Those awsome items are in pvp zone because they had to be earned, and pvpers tend to make pvers "earn" them. For me I played on triumph so it was just have that small amount of sad pvp that was remnant after i13. Also (this logic may not jive with people) the mechanism of pvp was implemented in the zone so I intended to use it. Many people will say how is that fun, just repeatedly killing a target that is not willing to engage in combat and just want to be left alone, what do you gain from that? I would say chance for a PvP IO to drop.

Well that's when PvP was active and any target in sight that could be killed will be killed xD. PvP IOs was introduced to try to incise people to pvp with the fail i13 pvp. Funny thing is the devs also concede that the whole idea of i13 pvp was a failure because they allowed you to get pvp IO by farming merrits.

That's the theory, here's the reality.

I would refresh my Shivan Shards and Nukes at around 3am, when those zones were mostly deserted, after hiding myself from searches and loading up on every bit of stealth I could scrounge up.  If I was unlucky, some trash-spewing jerks would be out to grief me, in which case I'd promptly abandon the zone and try again later.

Those of us who don't want to PVP, don't want to PVP.  Putting those goodies in PVP zones doesn't make us "earn" them, it just makes us have to potentially deal with griefer jerks to get them, and typically try to only be in those zones when said griefer jerks likely weren't there so we wouldn't be harassed.  Trying to lure PVE players into PVP zones just makes us resentful, it does not turn us in PVPers.

Four and half years of CoH taught me to hate PVPers with the flaming passion of a thousand suns.

Except the thing is...well, the things are...first, this isn't "In Living Color", and (I assume) FFM isn't Jim Carrey. (If I'm wrong here, I'd just like to say that I really liked 'Liar Liar'!) "Somebody else said something else about two decades ago that could have offended someone entirely different altogether" doesn't really make much of a difference to things being said here and now by other people to people who may be members of this community and not necessarily feel welcome or comfortable due to the actions of another poster.

And second, saying "cultivate a thicker skin" is not a useful response, especially from a moderator. It's basically a way of saying, "Calling people out on their bad behavior and getting them to stop is hard work. Telling you to suck it up and take it is easy. I'm just going to tell you to suck it up and take it." It doesn't work for anyone except for the people whose lives are made easier by not having to pay attention to how it feels to be the target of insults.

And again, I'm trying very very very hard not to make it sound like I'm more offended than I am. Again, FFM's comment was relatively mild. But I would really like people to see that these kinds of things have a cumulative impact--there was an eleven year old boy who was an MLP fan who attempted suicide because the school bullies wouldn't stop trying to "confiscate his mancard", and he didn't know how to make it stop. And while I'm not saying this is anything like as bad as that, and I'm not saying you should take action as a moderator, I am kind of saying, "Hey, before you say something like that, maybe you could perhaps think about how it might sound to someone else? And whether it's worth it for that joke?" I don't think this is a crazy idea, and I'm a little surprised that it's getting this much pushback.
