I am really not so sure about that.

One of the main gripes about CoH was how little it was advertised and supported with regards to trying to gain new subscriptions. If it is run by a company that is actively spending money to draw attention, and given the increased current popularity of superhero movies, it is quite possible that a lot of new faces will at least try it.

As a side note, did NCSoft even notice that The Big Bang Theory mentioned CoH, and were they wise enough to talk to the producers/actors about a cross-platform advertising? Putting up TBBT posters in Paragon City in return for another mention or two on the show? Of course not. Or buy advertising around the release of The Avengers? Iron Man? Captain America? Etc?

I think that there are a lot of potential CoH customers out there that were just not exposed properly, or at all, to the game. And that means that it's quite possible to bring in a lot of new faces.
Okay this was like 5 pages ago but I'm not reading all that so.

Anyway, at one point they tried to force a cross-promotion thing with Conan when he invented the superhero character The Flaming C.  They posted that they were holding a "Conan costume contest" and that they hoped it would get mentioned on the show (yes they actually wrote that).  Nothing came of it.  It was kind of sad, to be honest.

Well I'm still holding a torch and hoping we get the game back.

I'll join you in that...

It's archetype, not arch type. The first is a term referring to a fundamental base form or pattern. The latter is a type of structure.
Sorry, got that out of my system, carry on with your discussion.

Just FYI, I just checked NCsoft's facebook page and saw that it's been 5 days since anyone posted anything about City of Heroes and it's been 12 days since anyone posted a whine/rant/demand about City of Heroes (the post 5 days ago was a blanket apology for our "spewing vitriol" in the past).

Interesting...  I guess people are getting the message!  Way to go!  :D

The buyers have to prove they can run the game.

This is the part that I find interesting. It just illuminates how obtuse I can be! They actually do care about their image, their ...product, if you will. I just never think of things like that - which I guess explains why I'm not in charge of such things.

The thing is, my dense brain can't imagine why anyone would buy the game if they couldn't run it - unless they just wanted to rights to retcon the whole Statesman dying thing or something like that.

I'm looking forward to learning who our corporate ninjas are. Since I'm largely ignorant of the gaming industry aside from CoH, I suspect the revelation will be very anti-climactic for me.

One thing you get an appreciation for if you follow kickstarter a lot (and get burned by backing some failures) is how many people have a decent vision and think they can pull it off but have absolutely no idea how to actual run a business or bring a product to market. You have people with no technical skills relying on using the money to hire people that do (even though they wouldn't have the knowhow to identify and manage those people), ones who seem to have the design end nailed down but totally underestimate how to select and deal with mass production facilities, ones who have those first two areas down that don't realize the numerous logistic differences between mailing out a few boxes and mailing out 10 thousand boxes, etc. They end up burning the bulk of the raised money, and then their personal, in one area and then find they can't fulfill the others, leading to a delay or a purely scuttled product. These problems hit new entities, existing businesses entering a new field, and even business producing something they always have but not at this scale. Optimism and / or hard work only get you so far.

Its gruesome.

If NCSoft sold to somebody who thought they could fulfill the dream of launching the game but actually lacked the capability, we would be in a worse state because logically that entity would significantly run up costs on the way to failure and then what happens? The new owner would have to sell CoX to some other non-vetted company, or worse a creditor would take possession who could have the goal of flipping it quick to recoup investment losses. And who knows how bad things would get at that point. I actually really appreciate that they are exercising due diligence in this process, even if it slows things down.

Not necessarily, depends on what level arching your arch type is authorized for

No good deed goes unpunished, especially on the internet.

There is some truth to this, however in the overarching scheme of things, pretty much if you provide the occasional cube of cheese the mice have incentive to keep calmly and happily running around their glass maze. Its sort of what we were all doing until that awful day when we all found out our cubes of cheese were going away. So even if things start out rocky, eventually the mice go back to pushing that lever for their bits of cheese. [Or badges! Or insert your fav reward here] But I honestly don't think people are going to heap vituperation on NC for selling the game, why would they? They got what they wanted: that metaphorical glass maze back, with cheese intact.

I just hope all this works out. Right now, I would happily run around Perez on a level 5 with no travel-powers, nay not even a jump-pack. There's a maze for the ages, truth.

I appreciate that explanation. I don't follow kickstarter at all, really - except the MWM kickstarter.
I guess in my head, I was looking at it like how I would act at a garage sale. I'm not using it, it's got some value. I'll sell it. Caveat Emptor, and all that. So, yeah, the due dilligence thing seems like a great idea.
