I miss City at times like this, Friday morning at work with a weekend less than 8 hrs away, I should be planning which toon to level, which badges I need, which TFs I'd like to do this weekend etc.... But no I have to think about another weekend with not being able to enter my City!  :'(

That's impressive.  I don't even remember which conversation.  Now that's serious modding power.

I kind of figured anything I threw in there would be deleted :).  Oh well, at least he's not stark raving mad in this matter; http://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/DF2014:Insanity .  Or berserk...
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

If I could have done that I would have...and I agree with everything you said LOL!

Pinky and the Brain?

Yes that was what the conversation was about xD (Keep it at that)

Here's a thought: has Nate and co. thought about attaching a CPU sharing scheme to CoX? The idea is that since CoX is so old, it can run fairly decently on any modern computer, what we do is lease say... 2% of the CPU time of any user playing to a scientific organization who needs it (think Folding@Home or Seti@Home)

The literal answer to your question is "only they know what they're thinking."

But on the general subject, its possible, but probably more trouble than its worth, given the relative size of the CoH (likely) playerbase.  Also, that's not how those things work.  Generally speaking, they work by using all the idle time of your computer, not a percentage in the background.  And also, these days they tend to use your GPU (which is even more reason for them to only run when idle and not in the background).  GPUs are incredibly fast number crunchers that make your CPU look like a wet noodle.  Back when I used to run Bitcoin miners (for fun, not really for profit) my GPU ran the hashes over 500 times faster than my CPU, and at the time my graphics card was three years old and my CPU was a four core eight-thread i7 running at 2.8 Ghz.  It might as well be a Ti-99 compared to my radeon.

In technology terms, a modern gaming rig is an AMD/NVIDIA supercomputing vector engine with an Intel peripheral handling basic IO.

Strongly disagreed.  If you want to run those programs you can run them yourself.  Software bundling is bad, mmkay.

No news, eh?  Sigh.

I got an idea Nate;  hows about you send us an update in code?  Cryptoquote style or Binary?  Even if it takes weeks for us to decipher it'll keep us busy.  Idle minds are the Devil's workshop and all that...

we did something like that in college except it was in javascript wrapped in html designed for the web browser.  web server handed out the problems to be worked on.  browser would run the code and return the answer as part of a post request.  very primitive but it worked with the 5 computers we had at the time.  this was back in the 486dx2/66 days before anyone thought of leveraging a dedicated number crunching cpu like the one used in the phsy-x boards or the cuda cores in today's nvidia cards.

the app itself was a brute force decryption machine crunching single des encrypted messages.  an msql database held all keys tried and results while a perl script generated keys to try.  One page, one key to try.  click a link and it'd pull another key to try.

with today's browsers, should be possible to get results and pass keys to try without reloading the page.  should also be possible to throttle the cpu usage so not to degrade the browser experience.

the trick was to build a site with content that would entice people to want to stay on the site for hours.  facebook and twitter seemed to have the content part down   :)

Ah I'm really missing CoH. I'm playing DC Universe, and cannot for the life me come to grips with it. I don't like the controls, it's difficult to talk, so I don't.
Does anyone else here play DCUO? Does anyone else seem to have the same kind of trouble with it like I do?
Honestly thought it would be a good pass time, until CoH comes back, but my lack of knowledge towards the game makes me miss the simplicity and comfort of my home town Atlas, even more.
I want my Atlas!! 😢

Ah, DCUO.  I couldn't even get my ranger out of the tutorial.  My daughter had to do it for me.  I quit about then.   :P
