DEMOlition demo builder
« on: December 08, 2012, 02:11:43 PM »
I've not found any mention of it yet but just wanted to make people aware of this COH demo builder.

http://demolition.mcuznz.ca/

Provided you've got a .costume file or Sentinel+ extract, you can get a very short demo made of your character in Atlas Park.

It's fairly basic at the moment but it's a really nice tool with a lot of promise - and especially handy if you didn't get the chance to made a demorecord of a particular character.

Enjoy

I had one slight problem using it on a costume file of one of my deceased Iron Eagles characters, but i did solve it by comparing to a regular demofile.

The demofile as originally created worked fine for location and movement, but had an odd solidly colored figure being circled by the camera. I was using horizontal circle the figure.

D'Jeanie's costume file got interpreted with a line like this, followed by a line for skin color and scaling? with a space in front.

Approximately like this...
0 10 COSTUME 1
0000 0010 0000 0000 etc etc (values made up because I'm on a laptop at work today)

A normal demofile has this same area like
0 10 COSTUME 1 0000 0010 0000 0000 etc etc

so I just backspaced the offending line till it was on the 0 10 COSTUME 1 line and resaved the .cohdemo

and it worked just fine.

Yeah! I cheered! and promptly spent an hour too much staying up late. Working today... lol, it was worth it!

I only figured out I could try recording a video of all my costume files on the last day... finally got it working, but I was still trying to get all the zones with a flythrough from my characters (completely forgot about first ward and night ward tho).

Then, I had the chance to do the Eden TF which I'd never done before. It was awesome but I forgot about recording video of costume/ character selection screens...and then it almost time for the end.

Now with this tool I can get good shots of the many creations that I never used, or in the case of my Iron Eagles characters, who've died along the way. Fortunately, I got in the habit of saving designs for costume slots.

All our existing characters are saved with Sentinel too, and now its easy to see them too! The ones we've used in the last couple months I demorecorded when playing as often as I could, but the ones we didn't use had only Sentinel as a record.

Thanks for this tool!

Having to translate a few .costume  files manually,  this tool is a godsend.

Thank you so much!

I had about 200 more costumes to go.

I seem to remember there being a selection for daytime or nighttime on the page.

I picked Daytime, but it's not a demofile being played.  It looks like a background.

Would someone be willing to PM me a working demofile to try?

This happens if you run the game with wrong arguments.
Can you show us the arguments you're using for demo playback and the location of your demo file?

The 'vulcanette.demorecord' is in the same folder as cityofheroes.exe

It needs to go under client_demos -- you can create the folder if it doesn't exist.

The file name also needs to end in .cohdemo. Then you'll use just -demoplay vulcanette

If you really need to play .cohdemos from outside client_demos, here's your remedy for it: http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6300.msg81339.html#msg81339 .

I ran a different costume file last night and it worked just fine straight out of the DEMOlition save.

So, my problem on my first attempt might have been a one shot deal.

I'm wondering if someone can help me with this. I downloaded a couple of demo launchers, CoX Demo Launcher and COH Demo Launcher 2, and I'm having the same issue with both. Whenever I try to play the file I just made with Demolition I get a popup error that says "Could not find City of Heroes!"

I've tried putting copies of both programs in my beta and standard COH folders, each containing a cityofheroes.exe. I'm wondering if the programs are looking in the wrong place for some reason? My file paths are C:/Program Files (x86)>NCSoft>City of Heroes and C:/Program Files (x86)>NCSoft>Cohbeta

Any help would be appreciated.

Between this project and Codewalker's costume creator unlocky-app, I am sort of picturing a more-static version of Garry's Mod coming into existence if all the apps out there are combined and refined.

Makes me wonder if we could expect motion-comic videos, or even mods based on the CoH engine.  The character creator is so flexible and there's so much content in the game...

I am using the demo launcher from a different drive altogether. It is an application in which you load your .cohdemo files. You can't run the demofiles themselves.
Is taht helping?

CoXDemoLauncher should open a console window with the messages "City of Heroes not in current directory. Searching via system registry..." and then "City of Heroes not found. Please place this program in the same directory as cityofheroes.exe". Is that what you are getting?

Possible.
Some of the paths are stored in system registry Please open "Run" from Start Menu, then enter regedit. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\NCsoft . Does it exist? If so, what keys are inside it?

Same problem here. I've got the EU client.

I followed each step but when I double-click on the CohDemoLauncher2 it says :

"Could not find City of Heroes! If you normally run City of Heroes as an administrator, make sure you run this program as administrator, too."

From the beginning I launch it with admin rights.

I'm on W7 32bits.

My CoH directory is : V:\Program Files\City of Heroes

My .cohdemo files are in : V:\Program Files\City of Heroes\client_demos

And the demolauncher is in my download folder.

Try the following: My CoH directory is : In the top of your demobuilder window you see three radiobuttons: Standard Game, Test Version and special.
Choose special and direct to your COH directory: V:\Program Files\City of Heroes.
Then load you demofile that should be under client_demos as a subdirectory in your City of Heroes folder.

Good Luck!

If "demo builder" = demo launcher, I repeat that I can't launch it.

But thank you :)

Edit : an other .cohdemo file (record of my base) works fine (without running demolauncher).

That is a Windows 7 permission rights problem in general, John.

I believe it has to do with UAC, not sure however.

I'm sure if you google "windows 7 admin rights problem" or "windows 7 uac problem", you could figure it out.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

You may find, unfortunately, that your demo file is corrupt or missing some vital string (or, maybe/hopefully something easy like a missing } somewhere), if other demofiles are running without issue.

Maybe post the file contents in a quote box and someone smarter than me could parse it real quick to see if something's gone awry with it.
If you see me posting here, you need to tell me to stop it and get back to writing.

I think he's saying he can't run/launch/open the demo launcher program itself, not any demos.

I'm having a small issue with the DEMOlition demo builder.

Thus far, I've had no problem being able to show standard male figures in costume using .cohdemo files made (they pose right, camera rotates correctly, background/zone is great, character is there in full costume looking awesome), but when I use the exact same process in the builder for large or female characters, the builder will run with all the right rotations, positions and backgrounds but the female or large character is instead a default green/black generic figure, no costume, face, skin...just the same type of green default you'd get in the costume creator.

I know that each of the costumes I saved for the females and larges work, since I was able to load them onto the recent unlocked Character Creator (ICON), so I'm not sure what is going wrong.

I've never asked for help in all my years of CoH, and I've exhausted my brain cells on how to fix this.

Any help would be highly appreciated, folks.

I ran into that yesterday, and I found out what the issue was:

The costume line should be continuous, with no breaks.

In this example, there's a line-break between the beginning of the line and the data that follows it. You may notice something similar. If you correct that, it should work.

I'd advise that hard returns be coded at the end of every line, otherwise it is really not that friendly for users to edit afterwards.
At least, when I just used it, it appears to be one continuous line of code.

That has not happened to me.

Are you sure that you had "word wrap" check-marked?

It's not a word wrap issue, but appears to possibly be a browser issue -- firefox appears to write out every line with a hard return, but that doesn't happen in IE -- it's all continuous, for me at least.

Gotcha. Other folks have had issues using IE with the DEMOlition creator. I tend to dodge hurdles like that by just not using IE :D

Might be the difference between \n and \r\n .
We were heroes. We were villains. At the end of the world we all fought as one. It's what we did that defines us.
The end occurred pretty much as we predicted: all servers redlining until midnight... and then no servers to go around.

Somewhere beyond time and space, if you look hard you might find a flash of silver trailing crimson: a lone lost Spartan on his way home.

I haven't said it yet here but wanted to make sure I did, this program is amazing and I so very much appreciate you making it and putting it up to share with the rest of us. Very easy to use.

I am an avid demo recorder and know my way around a demo but this cuts out a lot of the work involved and that makes you guys awesome!

Loving this program!

Putting together demos of my characters so I can piece together group shots of team, and "group shots" of individual characters in all their various costumes.

I'm wondering.

Regarding the "Name" function.

Could you have it just fill in the name of the file used, since Sentinel uses the character name in the file name, and/or, I usually put the character name in my costume names, it would be a quick edit for the user.

Very nice!

(though currently I'm getting a 500 error if I try via IE... Chrome works, as long as I get rid of the extra line feed in the costume line...)

Hm.  Not all the locations seem to work for me.  E.g. Positioning where Ms. Liberty is or the top of City Hall is fine, but Architect Studio results in a blank blue screen, with the words "Atlas Plaza" that gradually fade out... I think* the culprit is

0 CAM POS 144.714600 10804.835938 -638.283936

when the POS is

0 33 POS -669.000000 220.000000 -669.000000

Not sure where 10804.835938 is... behind the sky or in the middle of some object?

* as in, changing this line to use a more sensible number like 220.000000 fixes it...

I had been working on a similar program to this in PHP, but I've only gotten it working locally on my Mac's built-in web server. Mine lacks many of DEMOlition's options but has other functionality. Since I have it running locally, it's using two folders, one to look for costume files, one to write demo files to. Like this one, it will read the costume file and convert it to demo file, but it will actually create the file too. It can also run a batch of costume files, creating a separate demo file for each or one big one that creates like a slideshow of costumes.

I thought I would share the location information i've been using for my program. It's the inside of Icon (I think the one in IP) and sets the toon standing on one of those circular platforms that the Icon mannequins are usually on. It makes a nice location for cycling through several costumes.

Here is the Location and Camera info:
1 0 Version 2
0 0 Map maps/City_Zones/City_03_02/City_03_02.txt
0 0 Time 12
0 CAM POS -1638.463745 -182.343643 -2501.788818
0 CAM PYR 0.098 1.563197 -0

And the player should be set to:
0 999 POS -1649 -187.09375 -2502
0 999 PYR 0 1.583068 0
0 999 MOV READY_2HIPS

For multiple costumes, I include this between each toon (to get rid of existing and switch to next):
15000 999 DEL

If the creator of DEMOlition is reading this, please feel free to include this location option in your next update.

You saved it as .cohdemo, yes? Not as text?

Place the saved file in client_demos folder in your City of Heroes folder that has the cityofheroes.exe (I hope you still have your game installed)

Download this (it's safe, don't worry) https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D0133125_936_01312410, put it somewhere extracted

Open the demo launcher.exe, click on the ... button at the end of that top line, it should find your city of heroes demo folder.
Pick your cohdemo file to open, then hit "play demo". It should launch your demo, give it a bit to load.

Hello, sorry.

WinRAR is needed to open that file, I wasn't thinking about if you knew how to work those or not at the time. Sorry.

Here is a ZIP file of the demo program, which should open for you:
https://www.sugarsync.com/pf/D0133125_936_02777486

"Extract" this is what you need on the program that comes up, either winzip or standard unzip program. Put it on your desktop.

Then follow the steps I said for you before.

Hope this helps :)

Do you know exactly what registry keys Demo Launcher is looking for?  I can't get this to work on my Win7 machine, but I don't see any registry keys for NCSoft or City of Heroes, either...

I can launch demos by going to the coh dir and executy cityofheroes -demoplay demoname, so it's not a huge deal, but the launcher sounds convenient....

If you don't have *any* keys for NC Soft or CoH that might be the problem..

If you want, I could go look up my keys for the launcher though.

Have you tried downloading the Beta Client and using the launcher there?

Might work :P

Plus, the beta server has all sorts of unreleased shinies, if you haven't been there.

Oh, wait, the keys are in HKEY_CURRENT_USER, not HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. All I had to do was create an "Installation Directory" string in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cryptic\Coh and point it to the right place and the Demo Launcher finds it.  Yay.

You can't move your toon in demos easily, like you could in the real game... sorry.

That sounds like DEMOlition glitched on your costume. Sorry, not sure how to fix that without lots more info.
Maybe someone else could help with that... gotta go eat dinner now myself.

What web browser do you use?
What file are you trying to convert to a demo record? Is it a costume or a titan+ export?
If it's a costume, is it i24? With or without being in NPC mode?

set up some criteria in atlas, created a same name character.cohdemo <--ext
then went to Silex website, downloaded silex_fat.zip file, created a folder to store it under
c:/  folder name   [ silex ]....then extracted

created Folders in City of Heroes:  [ tmp ] and [ client_demos ]

tried to run....looks like costume got lost, -all I see is a generic character
It was great to see old school ATLAS PARk...JOY  ;D

some of my chars look good while others just are corrupted.

well....guess it's progress....They look GREAT in ICON. but lousy on DEMOlition. I'm not sure what is going on.....Loaded ICON again-tried using switching to 'Going Rogue' and 'Heroes, makes no difference....names don't make a difference either, leaving it 'generic hero' or char name.

Judging by the white-out boots, you need to turn your graphics up. In ICON, hit 'back' until you get to the login screen. Edit your graphics to bugnuts high levels, then exit the game. This will boost your graphics in both demo files and ICON itself.

Turn your graphics settings up. Stuff that shows up bright white tend to be things that need higher settings to view. To turn your graphics up, back out like you were going to the login screen. There's a settings button there. Keep in mind there's no way to get back into ICON once you've done that, so you'll have to exit and restart after you've applied your settings.

Alternately, try redownloading from www.savecoh.com - there's a download link in the right-hand box - maybe you have some corrupted files.

Changing Graphics settings doesn't seem to help white suit of Maid.
which is metallic fashion in Icon.
...perhaps I'll re-load CoH files as was suggested.
Guess I should 1st save my costume filesand Demo files=then re-download- and overwrite old CoH files?

Cool, glad it helped.  Sounds like the white parts isn't due to graphics settings then.   Are those old costume files from before a change to the tailor, maybe?

If you post your .costume file here, or message it to me, I'll try and convert it with my app.  No guarantees it'll work, but I'll give it a try.

...perhaps I'll re-load CoH files as was suggested.
Guess I should 1st save my costume filesand Demo files=then re-download- and overwrite old CoH files

Hmmm....I did something different this time.....Instead of using CoH.exe with it's shortcut to load my demo.coh file...I used CityofHeroes/Villians Demo Launcher   and manually selected the file using it's menu
File to: [               ]  ....looks like it is using a newer version of CoH, my costumes no longer have a problem.....Looking at the shadows, I see I must lower my characters a few feet.  O.K...I guess I am a slow learner....However, I am happy about this being resolved.

When you're playing back your demo, you can hit 'P' to pause/unpause the demo, and 'F2' to go into spectator mode, which lets you fly around using the mouse for aiming and WASD for movement.    I use that to doublecheck model heights and find good scenic locations.    Use the Cameraman.exe to capture POS/PYR info and adjust movement speed.

If you've got an action packed demo, it's a very Matrix-y feel to pause and move around.

Don't forget that the draw distance is based on whichever character is designated as "player" in the demo.   All the map stuff is there, but if you get too far away from the player,  NPCs and items won't be there.

Are you saying one can write a demo script file that is long and can perform more than one mov? ...or, um...
stacked mov's?....I thought 20 sec's was the limit....maybe I mis-read something.

I'm not sure there's a limit other than how much memory you have.  I have 15 minute long recorded demos, and other people have uploaded half-hour long or more demos.   The one someone scripted that shows all the MOVs in the game is like 3+ hours long, if I remember correctly.

If all you did was copy-paste the chunk in the post, then of course nothing else happened. That was an excerpt, as Arachnion stated.

I tried using this to convert a Sentinel+ .xml file into a .demorecord, but upon uploading the file to the DEMOlition website, I always get a reply of "The CSRF token is invalid. Please try to resubmit the form."

Am I missing some step?  The files have been unmodified from when I saved them off before shutdown of the game.

So is the converter gone? Everytime I click on the link to go to it all I get is:

Warning: Unexpected character in input: '\' (ASCII=92) state=1 in /home/mcuznz/demolition/web/index.php on line 8

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING in /home/mcuznz/demolition/web/index.php on line 8

The link to the 'all the mov' on sugarsync is missing as well. Could someone please rehost that for me?

Go here:

https://spideroak.com/browse/share/COX_DEMOS/2000/RECORDS_COX/Animations/

The file I think you want is titled:

AllMOVs-04Dec2007.zip

If anyone else has any file CoX files they would like stored, let me know.

Thanks!
I looked through the other CoH stuff you have on there, and I think I have a few things you don't. Want me to send to you?
