I never played CoH thinking it would be around for 20 or 30 years...
I think that is something which is going to have to change with online games.   There should be no reason to think you will eventually have to stop playing a game you like.   Do fans of chess, Monopoly, poker, or Risk have to do that?

This is the sort of thing which costumers eventually get tired of...especially when one company comes along to change that attitude.   Remember when phone companies used to think they could charge for "long distance" even though it wasn't really any different than making a local call?   Cell phones happened and now the old phone companies are hurting.  It's their own fault.

So the idea that fans of online games only get to play them for a short time will eventually be an outdated concept.   Somewhere along the way, a visionary company will change it.

The cost of hosting a game server is already trivial. If 10 subscribers paid a monthly fee, that would be enough to keep the lights on. The real cost is in developing new content.

If the new group wanted to get REALLY innovative, they'd spin up a path whereby player-created content could be voted on by the community with winners incorporated into the game. Something like AE only allows using existing pieces and existing powers, though. To be an order of magnitude more useful, player-created content would be allowed to include new costume and set pieces, new scripting for AI, and even new powers. Of course all that is possible, it would involve lots of work setting up the game to allow plug-ins, or publishing an API and allowing licensing of private servers for those developing truly new content.

The only way to have played the game wrong, was to not have any fun.

If you were having fun, you got it right! ;)

Sometimes, a player needs a bit of help to understand how to have fun.

In my case, I was in the Hollows with my new stone/stone tank when I met a couple outside of my mission cave.  He had a tank and she was having a terrible time with her blaster.  So I joined their team and taught the blaster how to use her range attacks to draw foes into a two tank trap.  For them, suddenly they could enjoy the game, playing with basic tactics that suited them quite well.

This is a one of my fond memories of the game.

I think if anybody has expectations that a CoH maintenance relaunch will even have 50% of the old playerbase they will be sorely disappointed. Sure there are those of us who will support it but a lot of older players will just shrug at its return remembering fun they once have or just check in once out of nostalgia and then file it away. Newer players might find the level of character creator options interesting but the old rigs still look very dated.
CoH2 is where any the dazzling successes would happen. The best CoH can really hope for is to pay the bills while CoH2 is developed.
You might be surprised.

By the time CoH closed...the player base was extremely stable.   The players who were there were hardcore and dedicated to the game.   Anyone who would be prone to lose interest in it was already gone at that point.

I think it's highly probable that 80% of the former players will return.   Probably lower if character data is gone of course.

As for newer players, Minecraft is hugely popular so I don't think graphics are the make or break thing.    8)

If I had to guess, I'd say 50% - at minimum.  We might go as high as 75%, but I would be shocked if we hit 90%.  That said, with an actual *advertising* budget (even a small one), we could actually hit our old numbers or even beyond by attracting some new players.

Me, I'm ready to purchase cash shop items to support the new dev team.  Let me bribe my way back up to Tier 9 and buy some purple IOs - that'll put some cash in their pockets.  :)

Part of me wants the news to hit on the 500th page.
I suppose posting for no reason other than to get us closer to 500 is a good use of my time, then.

My desire to see CoX return set me on a tour of mmo's for something to replace it.

Nothing exists. All others are mere shadows, pretenders.

A resurrection of CoX will see unexpectedly high numbers of former players returning. And new ones as well.
Assuming it remains largely intact.
It takes a village to raise a child. And it takes a villain to explain the value of lunch money.

Please, neoDevs, give me a reason to stop giving money to other games.  Stop me from feeling as if I'm cheating on my wife with skeezy... um...

You know, that metaphor went a weird place kind of fast.

I have a number of games that I will simply uninstall as soon as I have access to CoX again.  It can't happen soon enough.

If they announce the sale tomorrow, I will be scrabbling to put together the best pc I can muster for opening day.

And on launch I will not come up for air until server maintenance.

CoX isn't the most resource intensive game...

On another note. I feel like everyone's getting too excited and are going to jinx it. Calm yourselves!

I'll never forget the time I was out exploring in Crey's Folly with my signature elec/en blaster, and I came upon a lone tank grinding in Freaktown.

This was before the limitation on the number of mobs one could aggro, and here was this tank pulling a train of over 50 Freakshows in his trail, ending in a shipping container.

There he was slowly reducing their numbers with Hand Clap and Foot Stomp.

Naturally, he welcomed a blaster with some area attacks to help out.

It's too bad bodies fade away, we could have built a whole junkyard of freak parts that day!
