Quote from: dwturducken on July 25, 2014, 11:01:07 PMPoint being, those of us who love red side need to really step up and show it, once the game is back up, so that the new dev team has financial incentive, as well as emotional, to include red side in CoH2...

That may be true, and I'd hate to see it, as a mostly dedicated Red-Sider (although I was largely a Gold-Sider post-Going Rogue, and I'd hate to see the awesomeness of Praetoria left behind, too.)

Something Posi said in a post-Sunset interview about how they'd wanted to retool the Hero/Villain experience to make Villains the proactive forces (initiating crimes, etc) and Heroes reactive (hearing about those crimes and trying to stop them) was really awesome, and something that I would love to see. He said no matter how much they banged their heads against the table they could never quite figure out how to work it, though, which may still hold true for a new team as well.

But that would be quite something, if they could pull it off.

That was partly down to the design decision to segregate the factions in their own worlds - something DCUO chose not to do, even though they could have made heroic and villainous versions of Metropolis and Gotham if they'd wanted to follow the CoH design - and it's interesting to see that Kallisti Wharf was being planned as a shared zone, where heroes and villains would have their own separate stories and missions, but occupy the same world space, which was following on from Praetoria also being shared between its factions, so although we can't be totally sure, I think that the design direction was moving towards making all new zones shared in an effort to minimize the problem they created with CoV when they chose to split the factions into their own areas.

For the Heroes and Villains project, Titan City is being designed right from the start to be shared by all the alignments, with an equal amount of content for each of them.

I actually liked how DCO handled zones. It was the other stuff I couldn't get my head around. So I ceased playing after a couple of months of not getting it. lol
It takes a village to raise a child. And it takes a villain to explain the value of lunch money.

Here you go http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/

Thanks to all responding to my card-confusion post. In case I gave the wrong impression, my current financial situation is garbage, and will need a lot of time to improve before I CAN buy another computer, so the desktop that I bought at the end of '08, and the notebook I bought at the end of '11, will have to do until then. So I'm just looking for information at this point. I do appreciate the offers to help in figuring out what to get; I just wish I could put them to use now. :(

Looking toward that day: I was in Best Buy at one tine, talking to a Geek Squad member. I commented about how I hate it when Microsquish makes big changes to Windows after I've finally gotten used to a particular version. He said, "Well, then, you're going to HATE Windows 8." From what I've seen, I have no doubt at all that I will. There were enough changes in my notebook's Windows 7, that I went online looking for user workarounds. (I found one, for instance, that restored the Vista version of the Start Menu, and a page that told me how to port the Vista Wordpad to Windows 7. I do so love the Internet.) It says a lot - all bad - about a company when users of its main product come up with ways to make newer versions work like OLDER versions. They don't LISTEN to their customers.

Please, please, please, please, please don't go to those Geek Squad nitwits. Most of them don't know the difference between a SSD and a CPU, much less the ins and outs of an operating system. Painting with a broad brush here I know but...

I work as a self-employed computer consultant, helping homes and small businesses with the technology and computers. Been doing this for over a decade (three decades in one sense or another.)

A lot of people buy super cheap computers, $500 specials. Most people wind up having to replace them in 2-3 years.

People who buy in the sweet spot of price vs obsolence protection STILL wind up having to replace them in 3-5 years.

So 2-4 years is right about the time you would expect to NOT see them in the same computer. This isn't theory, this is data and experience speaking.
I don't doubt you but my experience I usually see people keeping their computer's 5-7 years. Most of the people I know only replace their computers if  something goes out. Rarely do they get a new one just to upgrade. Guess it depends on how much disposable income people have.

That's certainly a factor, and I don't know the median income of your acquaintances.

On the other hand, almost ALL of the people I am referring to replaced their computers because either they had to (non-elective) or because repairing was not economically feasible - a very unwise investment.

So these were NOT people with tons of money thinking, "You know what? I'll just buy a new computer". These are almost all people who only bought a new computer because every other option was worse.

2-4 years - on average. Obviously, the better a computer you buy, the longer it may last - and vice versa.

I probably get around that span, usually swapping out video cards once or twice along the way to keep game behavior within reason.

I used to always ask anybody who dealt with Geek Squad and similar support if staff had suggested reinstalling windows as one of the first solutions offered, regardless of the problem. The number of times that was the case was stunning.

I concur. Let people know where you live and I GUARANTEE someone will help you, even with spare parts, old computer, etc. Hell, one guy in B.O.S.S. supergroup years back lost his job and told us he couldn't afford to play any more, and he got enough game codes from the rest of us to play for 6 months. And I'm glad he was around because he was one of the best Inv/SS tankers playing at the time (after ED and before inventions). I have no idea how he stayed alive sometimes. My squishy energy/energy blaster still bows to his excellence.

I focused my emp on recharge as well as healing - I wanted to have all buffs up as much as possible, and heal if I had to. I usually didn't have to all that much (and I'd like to think I was a good healer when I did), but the problem is that my attacks never did that much. So, yeah, I would hit bad guys with various attacks, but on a team with true damage dealers I never really contributed that much to the actual damage. I had the Psy blast power set, so some powers were useful for crowd control, plus the secondary of -Rech was nice, but still not that useful, comparatively.
I used CIT before they even joined the Titan network! But then I left for a long ol' time, and came back. Now I edit the wiki.

Just to re-chime-in, for gaming it's 90% about the video card. Any computer 5 years old will work fine IF (BIG IF) it has a PCI Express 1.0 or 2.0 slot and at least 4GB RAM, a 64-bit O/S. Plug a $50 to $100 video card in there and you're golden. I would shoot for GeForce GT 610 for low $, 640 for medium $$. And really, there's no need to spend high $$$ until CoH2 comes out :)

I got into it with a manager at BB about 15 years ago that said he was a beta tester for Sony, yet he had no Idea what Redbook Audio was. I don't ask questions if I go there, which is very seldom.

Most of my systems last 5+ years as well. It's usually somewhere around the 5 year mark that i decide i really want to build a new system and the old one gets given away or put into storage. The last time around i decided to reuse the case and HDD, so the rest of the old system was boxed up and put away. With a new HDD and case it would make a pretty good fileserver. i think one of the things that helps system longevity is i buy all components based on their reviews/record of performance and reliability, and i rarely overclock by very much. Usually just a few small BIOS setting tweaks for performance.
And yet i'm seriously thinking of making a new system when this one isn't much more than 3 years old. What's sort of tempting is actually buying a prebuilt system, although even in that case i'd be looking for more of a barebones setup. Most of the other components haven't changed a lot in the past several years, so the main thing i'll need to research is what graphics cards are giving the best bang for the buck right now. Probably buying most of the components from Newegg, they've built up a fair bit of goodwill with me.
So far so good. Onward and upward!

There are a lot of reasons old comps could be used for file servers, but not a lot of good ones. At least back your data up in 3 places. One off site.

When Shades of Gray came out and a full villain dominator got access to Rage, it made dominators a "I win" AT with the instant domination (both in pve (plant/psi, fire/psi) and pvp (mind/fire, mind/ele, mind, dark)) Damn I miss playing dominators now :(

What's this referring to? i don't recall anything titled Shades of Gray or Dominator rage.
