Then why would they want to buy something that's already a proven success if their intent was to radically alter its design?

There could be a couple of obvious answers to that--one immediately comes to mind...I'll answer your question with a question:

Why would Disney buy the Star Wars franchise?

(Answer: because you have a built-in fanbase that will most likely buy the game/movie ticket before finding out they may not like it) ;)

[Awesome things]
Very much this!  CoH was in a state of flux and always improving on itself.  You can't preserve the memory of CoH by putting a brand new game in a permanent straight jacket that won't let it improve, reinvent or revolutionize things like CoH did.

Bing bing bing!  AlienOne wins the prize.  Which is nothing.

I can't say I agree with folks who want an exact copy of the game we already played.  I think keeping the story and characters and some key features is enough to capture the spirit of the game.  I don't feel like a game that just copied the original exactly would be adding a damn thing to the genre.

I totally get that you all are enamored with what we had, so am I, but why would you want to handcuff a studio's craleativity like that?  Why wouldn't you want them to improve where Paragon Studios made mistakes... and I think we all know that they did from time to time.

I would like to see COH2 carry over the same game mechanics but after that I would love to see what the new dev's want to do setting and story wise.

Why would Disney buy the Star Wars franchise?

Disney is not putting Mickey Mouse in Episode VII, nor are they casting new actors into the roles of the characters. Even so, I'll admit that I feel strange about the prospect of a new Star Wars film NOT premiering in May, nor having the 20th Century Fox fanfare (with CinemaScope extension)!

If you're gonna buy up something that was very popular and still has a following, and then you end up changing it too much, you end up alienating those very same followers and risk dooming your shiny new "2.0" version to failure. It would have been better to create something new that pays homage to the old, instead of trying to re-shape the old thing that has already entered the players' hearts.

I seem to be the only so far calling them "the new devs". :D

If the purchase does go through they might not even necessarily Dev the game themselves. They'll prolly form a team to do it, Like NCSoft did.

Even if all the purchasers can get are property rights, it will go a long ways towards the making of CoH2, and potentially help alternative games with actual content. I'd like to see all the games tied together. Destroy one world and 3 more pop up, like a hydra.

Also, the facebook vitriol might encourage NCsoft to sell instead of holding onto the game for a possible relaunch by themselves.

Very unlikely. If hating on them would encourage a sale it would have sold before it closed or shortly there after. I'm no fan of them but there were some really dreadful and hateful things directed at people who worked there rather than the policy that cost us the game. I know of no way to stop facebook but I'll be glad to take the pledge!

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I also think it's pretty obvious that it's not Disney buying it. These are people that have played the game and want it to succeed. STOP FEEDING THE FB MONKEYS!

Who said radically?  Folks make it sound like NOTHING can be change not even a decimal in damage numbers.  As if the whole game is some perfect sacred creation.

It's not.  But it was good.  However, there is always room for new creativity and innovation.

I've seen people flat out say as much...
Really, if the recharge time on [Hurl] is off by 1/10 of a second... I highly doubt more than say...5 people are going to notice. -shrugs-

If you read his fiction, that post of his is a LOT more ominous.

ummm.....

Did you say that on purpose?

Where did I say Disney was buying the game? I stated Disney was buying Star Wars as an illustration to answer the question "why would someone want to buy an established property?"

smh....Is everyone incapable of understanding examples/illustrations?

I was thinking this right up to the point that IW referred to the community freaking out "the Devs."  Which could mean nothing, but I suspect that's not the case.

I've been internally speculating on who all might be involved for a while.  I'm almost as excited to find out who our new overlords are as I am to get back in our City!

You've been swinging to extremes in many of your arguments. I never said it had to be static from this point forward. I just said I'd prefer it if I had my old characters and their stuff and that I'd be hesitant to subscribe otherwise.

By saying the word "Disney," I am not making a statement about my opinion on animated movies.

By stating "I hope we get our character data," I am not making a statement that includes "or else."

By stating "I had fun playing a Warshade," I am not saying that all other classes are bad.

Also, this just in:

Because when 99% of the game is great, what are the odds that the mistake someone else fixes is a critical part in me thinking the game is great?

The closer to perfection something is, the more likely that a change will be for the worse - even if it makes some guy's day.

For example, let's say that it gets into to the head of a dev that the idea of a lowly level 15 being invisible to a level 45 is just plain wrong, so they *fix* that.  That would ruin it for me - I relied on SuperSpeed+StealthIO to handle a LOT.

So let's not alter the mechanics we already have - but feel free to introduce new powersets, of course. ;)
