New efforts!

Super Firebug

The former devs were players of the game, right alongside and among us. They loved the game, and it showed in their work.

As I recall, Ironwolf said something to the effect that "the new devs are us" (more or less). Meaning that they "get" the game the way that we do. I'll put my faith in Ironwolf's assessment of, and trust in, the new devs. Until they prove otherwise, I'll take them as fellow players who want nothing more than to have Paragon City back as we left it, right down to the last blade of grass and scrap of litter.

Ummm, I read that as them agreeing with you.

I read the statement "STOP FEEDING THE FB MONKEYS!!!" as an accusation that I was starting some kind of rumor.... >.<

You've been swinging to extremes in many of your arguments. I never said it had to be static from this point forward. I just said I'd prefer it if I had my old characters and their stuff and that I'd be hesitant to subscribe otherwise.

Correct. We're talking about getting the game off the ground from whatever point it can be restored. Moving on from there will be up to the new team. Sure, we'd all like to see a moon base or whatever the devs had plans for, but porting it over might be the best, first new step. I don't know. I'm sure they'll figure it out based upon their resources.
I am an ass, but don't we all love a good ass!

I feel like we are all playing the game of leveling up this thread...

Is it Incarnate yet?

Thirty-Seven

@Sindyr: Yeah, I think that's a wrongheaded way to look at the new game.

CoyoteSeven

As you can see, even when we're all aware of it, we still can't help fretting and bickering with each other over details.

We're only human.

Now I remember what People did before facebook:  graffiti.  Never did that *either*
Global: Iron Smoke.  Boards: Kractis Sky. Server:  Champion.  Main:  Eskreema

I don't always get sucked into a jet engine and live to talk about it, but when I do I use the new ICD-10 V97.33XD code.  Because things like that need to be trended by your insurance company and your money!

I read it as them seeing Coyote as a FB troll, not necessarily accusing you of anything.

Tubbius

Mmmm.  Valid concern.  Let's NOT be putting more and more and more pressure on the folks looking to get the game.  They're having a hard enough time navigating the corporate situation as it is, folks.  Keep things cool.

Right now, how many of us are on pins and needles waiting for ANY post from Ironwolf, whether informative or not?

Take that feeling, and multiply it by a bajillion.  That's what we'll have if they cut him out of the loop.  And if THEY cut him out of the loop or lessen the info he's getting, then what might they tell any potential successor trying to get the game about him/us/the Facebook crowd?  "Stay away from that guy Ironwolf/those folks on the forums/those guys on Facebook.  Getting involved with all that killed us."

We do NOT want to be in that situation!

I was only referring to it as if they had been read here. I totally reject any implication that AlienOne has started rumors on FB. My Bad :D

Wait, what? I'm hardly on FB as it is. I used to be on LiveJournal all the time, until I moved to Twitter and Tumblr. Seriously... FB? They don't know me very well, lol.

If I get back all my characters and their stuff (not to mention my two SGs and their bases) I will most definitely subscribe again. In a heartbeat. If I don't? I'll be rather hesitant to continue, to be honest. I'd have to think it over. I can't speak for anyone else.

I keep thinking things like this is what might be adding to the "freak outs" for the team.

Fanta

Ok, now for a game of "you're it"! :D No, nothing. I got nothing.

For the record, you don't have to be on Facebook to act like a FB monkey.  To be clear, I'm not accusing you of anything.

You are free to have that opinion.

I prefer to think creative people should be allowed to flex their creative muscles.  You know, like devs for a videogame.

MWRuger

I think that we should start with the game as it was and then let the new owners share with us their plans. I can't imagine that the game could possibly remain static. Things always change, if they didn't wouldn't we still be playing?

Some changes are bad but some have been great. Super side kicking? So much better than it was before. What about the QoL changes made to the logout screen (along with others)? We can discuss changes when we actually know they exist!

Right now we know little and while I enjoy speculating, we have to keep in mind that's all it is, speculation.

It is a product of our excitement and fervor, but we shouldn't let that drown out the voices of reason.

There could be a couple of obvious answers to that--one immediately comes to mind...I'll answer your question with a question:

Why would Disney buy the Star Wars franchise?

(Answer: because you have a built-in fanbase that will most likely buy the game/movie ticket before finding out they may not like it) ;)

This analogy doesn't translate all that well. I also don't agree with the premise but let's start with the analogy.

For one thing, games like CoH are subscription or micro transaction based, which means people have to want to keep playing it for it to really make money. It's not like a movie where you pay the money, go in and that's it, like it or not it's over and the company got it's money.  If you make a product like City of Heroes and people don't like it, they will stop paying for it and there won't be much point in having it.  So to assume the Devs are just doing this as a naked short term cash grab doesn't make a whole lot of sense, it'd be a lot of time to waste just to put something out there for people to spend only a little money on to find it's not good because the new devs didn't care enough to make it good or make it feel like the original.

Of course there is also the fact that CoH doesn't have anywhere near the kind of fanbase Star Wars does. Sure CoH did well for itself and might be known in the gaming community, but it doesn't have the kind of massive appeal Star Wars does, and two years after the game went offline there are even less of us who still are rabidly into the game. So any amount of effort to purchase this IP as an attempt to be milking an existing fanbase would be silly considering that despite how devoted we are, there just aren't enough of us who are chomping at the bit for CoH that would sink money in it blindly for some shoddy game with the CoH name on it to make money.

Secondly, the assumption that Disney bought the Star Wars franchise only because there is an existing fanbase that will blindly buy tickets for the next movie doesn't hold up. Disney wants to do a trilogy of new Star Wars movies, and if they don't care and just throw any kind of mess on screen, they damage their ability to sell tickets the next time around.  Ohh sure there are some die hard Star Wars fanatics out there who will go see all 3 regardless, but there are a lot more people who wouldn't bother with the rest of the trilogy if the first one is horrible.  It's in Disney's best interest to do as good a job as they can on the first couple and make them feel appropriately like "Star Wars" because if they don't they damage their own movie sales. So the idea they are buying the IP and spent Billions to do so just to throw a pie at the screen knowing Star Wars fans will buy it up, only works as a short term goal, when they stand to make a lot more money on ticket sales, future movies, merchandising etc if everyone likes the film.

So this idea that the new mystery group is going to spend Months buying the CoH IP and game and go through negotiations to get all this stuff back, just to get the CoH name so they can throw any old thing in a new engine and call it CoH2 and hope they they are just going to get millions of dollars from the fanbase before we all catch on that it's not good, or not in the spirit that made CoH popular, is really cynical but just also not very realistic.  There just is no way the CoH name is such a draw that they'd make a shoddy new game without caring and think that they'd make some huge immediate profit off of it.

Ohh it's possible that is their plan, but it's not at all likely. For them to do what they are doing they have to want it, they have to really believe in CoH as a brand and IP to do what they are doing now with this kind of money and effort.  I personally think that deserves giving them at least some faith or credit until we see what they do if\when they get the game and have some time to work on it.
