So where are your characters now?

Spellcaster Hana

My main toon, Spellcaster Hana is traveling between dimensions, meaning, I'm trying to recreate her from other games/MMOs but she goes back to Paragon City for a visit and nostalgia once in a while (using Icon of course). She's also looking for my other toons since they all got scattered between dimensions after Paragon City was destroyed. :(

Lady Arete

Wow, been a while (new computer etc).
Well my characters have not been used that much.
Although I've kept my global name, well shortened it really in other games that I've tried etc.

So I guess they have yet to appear in any dimension which which the Lady opened a portal too.

Shinobu

Even before the shutdown I was working on stories based around an old crime-fighting character named Grandpa Anarchy, who was based off a City of Heroes character of mine.  I'd written seven stories about him before last September,  then I wrote 2 more in September 2012, and spend the month of November (National Novel Writer's Month) trying to write as many stories as I could.  These  are almost all very short stories, and I tried to write a new story each day for the month of November, even as I was playing the last month of City of Heroes.  I managed to start 30 stories and complete 24 of them -- some better than others, of course.

Over the course of 2013 I've tried to expand on that as much as possible.  I set a goal to write a new story for each week of the year and to publish a book.  I've already finished the first goal, and as far as the book goes, I've assembled 32 stories that I think work and edited them and/or rewritten when necessary, and I'm waiting on edits from friends and I have a friend working on a cover illustration.  The plan is to self-publish through Lulu or a similar outfit, my friends have done this before and it's pretty easy, and while you can't really expect to make money it's still pretty cool.

At this point I've written about 90 stories set in this universe, and I've borrowed quite a few characters from my CoH stable -- and I've also had fun creating new heroes and villains to play with, which is of course one of the things I did in CoH.  So I'm expanding the universe and having fun with it, that's what counts.  I read one story a month at my writer's group, and most of them have met with approval (and the ones that didn't -- deserved not to, heh).

Szoid

my fire/fire brute went up in flames
my dark/dark defender went....euh, well,......dark
my CoT infiltrator went underground
my stone/wp brute got depressed and tried to hang herself

k, stopping now, getting depressed myself...still miss the game

A few of my heroes had gone through portals in Portal Corp and ended up in alternate universes.

My shield tank - Jackie Victory ended up in Metropolis.

My street fighting scrapper - Battling Betty ended up in Millennium City.

All my others are waiting to return to Paragon City someday.

I went to Deviantart, found a couple of artists willing to take commissions whose style I liked, and had several of my characters depicted by them. Since then I've assembled their work into a large poster print and framed it on my wall, with the old COH logo in the bottom corner to remind me.
I admit it was pretty thrilling when each new piece came in. :)

I liked playing around with the character creator and powersets a LOT, so the hardest part was figuring out who would be on the final prints! Couldn't have them ALL depicted without taking a major hit to the wallet and the wall space!

Kaiser Tarantula

Well, I still have my Sentinel+ files, waiting on the day I'll get an opportunity to use 'em again.

In the meantime, some of my characters have been spotted in other games.  Crimson Crush currently exists in Terraria, where he still continues swinging around enormous weapons for fun and profit.  Turns out, he's pretty good at moving earth and engineering.  Kaiser Tarantula has temporarily hung up the crabspider pack and is trying a life as a Shadowknight on Everquest.

When Dungeon Fighter Online shut down, a couple of my characters went with it.

They're all living a rather 'mothballed' life, waiting for their next opportunity to take up the hero & villain life.

The various commissioned prints that made up my little shrine-on-the-wall to my past toons can be seen here:

Blackshear

Sentinel+, Icon, got all that going.

MMO wise, I did revive one toon briefly in TSW, but that game has yet to really win me over.  It's a good concept but the combat lacks the visceral punch of City's combat system and the community pales in comparison.

I've pondered taking some of them to the CO dark side, but I was there for the launch of CO and it didn't appeal to me.  Pretty good graphics, OK combat, but it doesn't even have a tenth of the content.  The teaming mechanics felt like old school City, before team-wide sidekicking, and that's not an endorsement.

One of my characters, Blackshear, started life not in City but in pen-and-paper Champions (which is every bit as awesome as its online counterpart is lame), and while that campaign is long over the GM still revives it for the occasional one-shot, so to my mind the "real" version of that particular toon will live forever.

Tabletop is a great way to revive your characters, but unfortunately it can be a chore to find people who play and run superhero tabletop RPG's.  Of course now we have open source virtual tabletops, which makes it easier to connect with other games, but most of them are D&D based.  (Of course, for those of you who were bringing Drow or other D&D based toons into City it's a gimme.)

yoreverend

I did do the Sentinel+ thing just in case.
Never have been able to get Champions Online to work for some reason.
I did mess with DC Universe Online free-to-play recently and was able to make a version of my old Huntsman, but I doubt I'll do much more than mess with it occasionally for a few days before uninstalling it.

Castegyre

Role playing since '81 I've had a lot of characters come and go in various games. I've had some basic concepts coalesce into archetypes that get re-envisioned from time to time, game to game, setting to setting. So I was ok with letting most of my CoX characters go. Some vague version of them will carry on somewhere else in time. I had one particular character in CoX that was unique for me and that I miss very much, however. A borderline personality boy genius who should have outgrown his desire to play with toys, but instead he learned how to bring them to life. Mantenna was a Bots/Traps MM that could take almost any spare parts and cobble them together into a 'toy'. Often his toys were lethal and Mantenna really didn't care so long as he got what he wanted. There is no game for me to recreate this character online. I tried in Champions and it was a pale comparison at best. I would re-make him in a HERO game, but all of my old table top mates have families and careers now. No one else around here seems to like the system and I'm too old to train up a bunch of kids on how to play it anyways.

Nightwatch

Nightshade has left her boyfriend and now lives in a menage a trois with Dr Night and Moongirl in London.

Divine Wind II has returned to Tokyo and continues to honour the name of her grandfather, the original WWII Divine Wind.

BlackMoth is still somewhat unsure of whether he is even real.

primeknight

Prime Knight is my own design, which I used in City of Heroes.  He and his fellow heroes are currently in a story of mine: commanding a starship defending Earth.

I also found a bunch of heroclix which are pretty close to the CoH designs sitting on a display shelf.  (hanging with my shapeways designed starship).

I've also recreated Prime Knight in Champions, Star Trek Online, and Final Fantasy 14 ARR.

Bold

I feel like my characters are still living their lives in Paragon, waiting on me to get back to them. I can't see them, but they are still just doing their thing.
In fact one of mine 'got married' Dec. 1st (we wanted to leave with them expecting something happy), so they're coming up on their 1 year anniversary too. It's just a better one that the anniversary we're all getting ready to see.

More to the point, Bold, Noble and Peppy all live on in my art, and as action figures (Customized some DC figures, fairly extensively). And all my others still live similarly, only in art, until we get our city back.

Pengy

Most of my characters are still in Paragon City or the Rogue Isles. One or two are wandering the Earth in search of adventure.

My main, Windows 3000 Sux Man, finally fulfilled his quest of 9+ years and built a working time machine to return to the year 3000. He would probably have gotten finished sooner if he hadn't insisted it be in a flying sports car.

Most of his single-player SG, Technological Crime Patrol Over Independence Port, were sliders, time travelers, or time-traveling sliders. He took about half a dozen characters back to their homes that day, leaving TCPoIP almost empty and Kawaii Apocalypse redside leaderless and also somewhat depleted. The groups merged with coalition groups (if the game was still live, they would keep one character in the group to retain their bases).

One time-traveling slider that chose not to go back to post-apocalyptic Omicron Delta 10-66 was Laufey, my psychic archer. She's enjoying using her precognitive powers to get rich in a world that's actually recovering from its disasters. And it looks like Crey needs a new countess, with the old one having been sent up the river for Murder One...

Honestly, about to move on from CO.  I am hopeful they'll be in CoT soon, cause my hatred towards the CO community had reached a boiling point.  I just cannot stand the CO community anymore, at all, to the point it's hard not for me to blow up on them.  The level of misery only really increases when I try to play cause I have to put up with them when online.  It's gotten to the point where, I won't even care if that game gets shut down, even.  I actually blew up and ended up flaming people in one thread and my post actually got the thread locked, cause I couldn't contain myself anymore.

So I ultimately don't know what I wanna do.  While I suppose I like CO, it's hard for me to wanna leave the sg i am in since they are cool people but, ultimately, I am unsure where to move my toons onto.  Alot of people are wanting to leave anyways, due to things like the dodge nerf, but it gets worst because yeah, there isn't anything to look forward to in that game.  My morale has tanked and I near went berserk for it, it's not a fun experience for me anymore.
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

Hey it happens.

Happened more often than many here want to admit even in COX.

Commuities end up being great for some to the point they cant see how anyone cannot like it and those that don't like must be because something is wrong with them, to some meh, others like how you feel towards CO. Contrary to popular belief, all are valid feelings because each person's experience may vary and some people deal with it in different ways.

I knew someone that played COX, hated the community, felt there was too many self righteous "I can never be wrong" people running the joint. He thought about quitting many times but decided, as he put it, "hell no, those people are not going run me from a game I like. They don't pay the sub, I'm not here for them, I'm here for the game." And thus he stayed for a while longer, until he found another game that caught his interest. Many others could fathom how could anyone have a bad experience or not like the community of COX. Others simply left and many didn't care COX got shut down due to their community experience. While others came to stop caring after the community changed after the announcement. Others dealt with it in their own ways.

Yeah, sometimes communities can have profound effects on the players if they have bad experiences. They go from loving the game to being frustrated ot the point they don't care if the game got shut down. While on the old forum, if you replaced CO in your statement with COX, people would come out the wood work to flame ya and troll you for saying what you said. And in fact that have to people who said even less. I think now that COX is gone and many move on to other games or try other games, many are starting to feel what those people many people used to flame make fun of, troll, and dismiss their feelings, went through. Ya just going through with it with CO. But many went through those feelings in COX and been told their feelings were invalid and got flamed, trolled, disrespected and got the works. Now maybe those that had different feeling in the end besides "all positive and hope" are a bit more understood now and realize their feelings were just as valid even though then their feelings were utterly disregarded and in a disrespectful manner dismissed. as the feeling many people of ex-COX fame are feeling in other games, especially in CO.

What often annoys me the most, in CO's case, is how alot of the players instantly assume i'm asking for a CoX clone, when I never am.  So suggestions I did make on the forums before often just got disregarded, but it feels like, yeah.  I remember one person who left CoX for a number of reasons, alot of bad role players drove the guy away, and I wasn't the best rper back then either.

I heard valiance online will be entering beta next year though, so i'm hopeful i'll have a game to go to soon.  I plan to move on when either VO or CoT enter beta, even if only in beta i'll still probably enjoy having gotten away from CO.

Indeed. People assumptions can be frustrating. Like I can bet if certain Ex-cox people showed up here right now, many would assume something negative, no matter what they say or the point being made. Even if someone well liked turn around and say the same thing and get praise by the same people that flamed the other guy but since the someone they like say it, it's ok, but it wasnt ok when the person they didnt like said it. When someone they didnt like say it, it's considered being negative, being a shill, trolling. But someonethey like say it, it's considered positive, and "hey they are just being realistic".

In CO many COXers are feelign the affects of those types of assumptions they used to do to other people in COX. "Oh another COXer, they must want to make CO into a COX clone." Yeahm some, very few, went to CO in a loud obnoxious disrespectful manner talking about how CO isnt like COX and how COX was better and CO should be more like COX, CO sucks and COX was the perfect game, with total disregard that some people play CO because they like it better than COX, and how they should transform CO into COX whilethye play until one of the other games get up and running, aka coming in there expected everyone and the game to cater specifically to COX player taste while saying they have no plans sticking around in this, as they sometime say "suck game that should get shut down". And unfortunately, like some people do, assume all ex coxers are like that. Like I said, maybe this exposure as unfortunate it is, open their eyes in the ill manner they treated some people in COX and the assumptions they made, and how it feels when people make quick and usually wrong assumptions. Hopefully now people can look back and realize that the people they treated like that, and now realize it's not a good feeling, know now how those people felt, and if they come across a few have it in their hearts to say, "my bad." because they marginalized it, but now they are on the recieving end, they realize it was probably more than simply whining and shilling as they originally assumed and not a good feeling to be on the other side.
