"Dumb Things" Paul Kelly
Welcome, strangers, to the show
I'm the one who should be lying low
Saw the knives out, turned my back
Heard the train coming, stayed out on the track
In the middle, in the middle, in the middle of a dream
I lost my shirt, I pawned my rings
I've done all the dumb things
Caught the fever, heard the tune
Thought I loved her, hung my heart on the moon
Started howling, made no sense
Thought my friends would rush to my defence
In the middle, in the middle, in the middle of a dream
I lost my shirt, I pawned my rings
I've done all the dumb things
And I get all your good advice
It doesn't stop me from going through these things twice
I see the knives out, I turn my back
I hear the train coming, I stay right on that track
In the middle, in the middle, in the middle of a dream
I lost my shirt, I pawned my rings
I've done all the dumb things
I melted wax to fix my wings
I've done all the dumb things
I threw my hat into the ring
I've done all the dumb things
I thought that I just had to sing
I've done all the dumb things
Darn tempted to post the lyrics to "Every ****** City" just to see what the filter would do

Great. Now I have the Partridge Family stuck in my head.
I'm sleeping. Right in the middle of a good dream. When all at once I wake up, from something that keeps knocking at my brain. Before I go insane I hold my pillow to my head, and spring up in my bed, screaming out the words I dread: I think I'll link you! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PFwZqE7AS_s)
LMAO, Triplash! I had half hoped to get "Sugar Sugar" by the Archies out of my head (tho why bother? it's such a good song) but then even before I got to your brilliant line about I think I'll link you (LOL) I then had THAT song going thru my head. It certainly is a good thing none of us here are showing our age what with the various songs that come floating down memory lane; e.g., a really MODERN song from just yester-year popped into my brain seeing this thread title and so I knew I was gonna add this song from the very most recent Days of Future Past (obligatory Moody Blues reference), yes, I mean none other than "I Melt With You" by Modern English. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MO4OP3-lXf0 Now as far as I am concerned, songs from this era (mid 1990s) are almost on the Edge of Time (ref: to Hawkwind), and yes, I am certain there are people who will point out to me that it's 2013 already, and thus ask what I am doing Living In the Past? 1982..... um, right. Thanks for that gentle correction. Just wishful thinking on my part that placed "I Melt With You" to a decade or more after its release. :-[ (embarrassed but I'll get over it.)
In reply to Mal's Song - HD Widescreen (which was nice, by the way, and how I wish we'd had far more than 3 seasons of
Firefly and
Serenity) I am posting one of my faves; Leslie Fish et al "Hope Eryie" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IXteSV8rBwY (Now if I can only get my State Legislature as excited about developing solar, wind and other "green" energy sources as we U.S. Americans felt about the Space Race during the 1960's..... ) ;)
I heard the fans of Veronica Mars actually got together and funded a movie. Completely crowdsourced. If Whedan can't get a studio to support Firefly (really, what studio would not take a chance on it? Even NcSoft wouldn't give up that much free money!) I am sure Browncoats would be able to swing that. Besides, Whedan is so invested in the story that he would practically jump at the chance. I would think the actors would as well. Nathan would I am sure.
I am still listening to "Beat Patrol" by the Starship, 1987 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VabzPmlaWOI mainly 'cause I haven't thought to listen to this song for decades! And I still like it. :)

I like the cut of yer jib, houtex. Yessir that's a well-cut jib.
My brain works much the same way. It gets... interesting, sometimes. For example, my favorite board game company recently announced a new expansion to their zombie-based game line. The expansion takes place in an old logging town, and in a YouTube video the game's designer said there would be big, burly zombies that carry chainsaws. He then made the mistake of calling them "zombie lumberjacks" where
I could hear it. This is the comment I posted on the video:
I'm a zombie lumberjack and I'm okay! I shamble all night, I eat brains all day.
(He's a zombie lumberjack and he's okay! He shambles all night and eats brains all day.)
I see the heroes, I chase them down,
And I hide behind the trees!
*fires up the chainsaw* Uuuurrrggghhh!

Because I am going to MINICON 48 (my first Minicon was 14, 15, or 16) back in 1977 or '78 and the year or two before I joined the Minneapolis Science Fiction Society one of their talented geniuses had adapted and re-written West Side Story into Midwestside Story hence the song of joy in my heart is lyrically "I Get To Go The Minicon" sung to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qy6wo2wpT2k "America."
And in honor of Easter, as well as helpful reminder to myself to strive to be upbeat despite adversity, from the film Life of Brian by Monty Python (Fair Warning: this may push the envelope for some or even more, so be careful), it's "Always Look at the Bright Side of Life" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHPOzQzk9Qo

And I promise you, that link is not to anything Rick Astley related. While I'm plenty mean enough to rickroll someone, I am definitely not un-creative enough to do it on April Fool's Day. :)
Once again, my brain fills in the musical needs as it is wont to do... randomly...
And so right now... it's "Jar of Hearts". I don't exactly know why that is.

I love that song!!! Especially the video done by the Guild!!! I should also note for the record that I owe my appreciation for Felicia Day and the Guild to Dark_Respite a.k.a. Samuraiko for her version of "Do You Wanna Date My Avatar" since I figuratively "came to the table late" since becoming a "silver surfer." (Man, retirement and age, really do have their advantages.)
But the most recent music I've heard was a clip sent to me by a friend of Healix' cousin on banjo--and he really is amazing! If you like authentic banjo music, her cousin is da man! Well, time for me to plug into some Tibetan flute music or else Indian sitar prior to some Aum-Aum style meditation. Have a happy day on Titan! :)
johnrobey: If you like ethnic sounds I recommend the Master Musicians Of Jajuka's Apocalypse Across The Sky recorded in their village in 1991 by producer Bill Laswell. They have a definite "whirling dervish" sound that can make your head swim if you let it.
healix: I've recorded demos for a new(ish) duo Nik & Sam. Sam is a great banjo player as well. A natural. Hard to find a good one with taste. (They are newgrass/country pop).
"The Bones Of You" - Elbow
Thank you! I definitely like ethnic sounds, nearly as much as I enjoy ethnic foods! My taste in music is all over the landscape, and even includes some "bubble gum" popular rock (provided I sample occasionally and don't try to make that a steady diet. After all, I don't want my teeth or my brain to rot!) ;D
So, thanks, and I'll sure to check that out. I tend to like Indian Classical music, Native American music, Middle Eastern music (one of my housemates from back in the day was a former farm girl from North Dakota who learned and practiced belly dancing--Opa!!), Samba, Calypso, Bossa Nova, as well as classic Rock N Rock (1950-early1990s), U.S. Jazz (all eras), Classics like Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, etc., and who doesn't go wild for the Rag Time of Scott Joplin? Anyhow, thank for introducing me to perhaps a new favorite band or even flavor of music! :)
Yeah this is pretty cool, especially the drumming. What I am listening to is : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AU8HWbQUsM Master Musicians of Jajouka - Apocalypse Across the Sky. However, now that I have recounted each and every song I've listened to on YouTube today (I am deliberately omitting "Ave Maria" that I heard earlier today in an in-person, unplugged, not online environment), this final song and what I am Listen to the very moment of my post this I
blame give full credit to Healix for posting this! http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,6657.msg114001.html#msg114001

But then I also like Madonna, Bette Midler, the Andrew Sisters, Barbra Streisand, etc. We could even find a few songs by Cher that I like and, even tho I have never

I can't even hear the title of that song without thinking of a Minecraft-based parody somebody made of it, Form This Way (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_FkfrbsEMI).

Wasn't sure what to think of James Blake and the indie hype over him, but this video and song is sticking in my head. Superb video, great song. (He reminds me of Cassandra Wilson the deep voiced female jazz singer).

Since I was re-reading this thread I have just finished listening to Master Musicians of Jajouka's "Apocalypse across the Sky", Julie Brown singing "I'm a Blonde." Triplash, while I didn't look up the song, I believe that if I had a soggy bottom, I too might be a man of constant sorrow. Instead I took myself down Memory Lane, mostly via Steeleye Span, chortling over their "New York Girls" song and others until stopping at "Saucy Sailor" to share with you guys here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlkI677q-FE

Good! 8) Re: pangs of grief, we are all there with you in spirit! I spoke with one of my CoH buddies by phone last night who like me is disabled and he was glad that neither of us is letting our friendship drop just because we can't log in, and while his Mac won't play DDO (where some of our SG mates went), my gaming anhedonia is such that I just don't enjoy any computer games at all any more. (Thanks, NCSoft! You've given me a lot more free time for non-MMO activities, as well as saving me my monthly subscription fee.) Anyway, ReplicatorFifth, Titan Network is
definitely the place to
cheer up!!! We have games, silliness, commiseration sessions, constructive fan-action, and probably soon virtual Costume Competitions from the clever kewl kids who know how to import images and get their costume creator, demorecord etc to sit up and do tricks. Me, I am low tech, but I marvel and appreciate so much what fans here offer and share with one another in humor and goodwill as well as the incredible technical accomplishments. (Okay, maybe I am not qualified to use the word "incredible" but from where I sit at my keyboard, it might as well be magic what these I.T.-savvy wizards of all ages can do.)
On to the O.P. Among the music that cheers me up is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H-XBqOqHDsg When I was, like 9 years old, I would listen to this and imagine myself as a superhero flying, shooting energy bolts, etc. and performing other acts of derring-do usually against the backdrop of whatever recent original series
Star Trek episode I had seen, or films, like
Planet of the Apes (i especially liked fighting the "bad guy" gorillas in that movie alongside Charleton Heston's Taylor character, tho in my imagination, unlike Taylor, I was fully clothed, had a cape, and wore rollerskates, even tho I could fly, and rescued him regularly from their nets when, in memory, he got to the line "Take your hands off me, you filthy ape!") Anyway, another good song, imo, for the active imagination is from Side Two and the final cut on Wendy Carlos'
Switched On Bach album. This early Moog synthesizer may sound rough and loud by today's refined standards; however, if you let it, i bet you can also envision yourself flying with or without lights streaming or flashing by. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6I33iW1kmw LOL, i bet like a lot of people, i invented in my head what Walt Disney showed us in the film
Fantasia--only I didn't see
Fantasia until I was in college. Happy memories of happy daydreams! Enjoy! :)

I've been delving into some dub lately. I've found Bassnectar (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1i9MG_PdrR4) to be some of the most palatable. He reminds me of Crystal Method (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m7CYzc1naaw) in the way their songs sound like performances even though they are almost entirely electronic dance(ish) music. Dub is like '80's metal today. A way for the kids to let off some of that angst in a completely different way than is popular (although dub is sneaking into pop a lot lately).
For some unknown reason

Didn't notice Trip's song under the pic. Reminded me that Tarzan was my son's first go-to-the-movies-movie. The soundtrack was so damn loud he cried and we had to leave. Contrast that to my daughter's first one (Mulan) where she not only stayed for the whole thing on the edge of her seat but clapped vigorously afterwards.
Can't blame my son, though. Phil Collins makes me agitated, too.

I totally know what you mean. Madison Avenue et al have a crazy notion of what sells 100% of the time--even when it don't. I'm all for Freedom and Liberty but every once in a while I like living in a world not informed by Beavis & Butthead sensibilities, though they have their place too.

I've not seen this Tarzan movie yet, but I imagine it is as fun and joyous as Disney's
Hercules. Yeah, the movie houses often crank the audio so loud that for the past several years I often bring a pair of earplugs and will use them during the very loudest scenes--and ironically almost never miss a line of dialogue--and can enjoy ear-splitting explosions at the muted level. ;)

Started thinking about tuba.... Yes, tuba. That led me to remembering a vid I saw of Tuba Gooding Jr.....Yes, Tuba Gooding Jr. He is the tuba player for the rap/soul band The Roots (house band of the Jimmy Fallon show). If you think his name is funny, the band leader/drummer's name is ?uestlove and the guitar player goes by Captain Kirk. Enjoy.
The Roots live at the Lowlands festival (Netherlands) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0jSGkf4DQc)
I challenge you to find rap act with a more energetic tuba player.

Yup it's a good song.
For some reason the theme to Duck Tales (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMU2NwaaXEA) has popped into my head, and will not vacate the premises.
I mean it's a catchy tune, so no complaints. I'm just wondering where the heck it came from. *scratches head*
The Bad Boys theme from Cops....................lol
I bet all the entries before this post and the one I'm quoting are great; however, I go with Triplash on this, not merely for "classic" (hence appealing to dinosaurs such as myself) but he's right, Yodel Rock
IS an untapped
gold mine and about the closest too it that comes to mind off hand would be some of Jon Anderson's (of
YES fame) singing and maybe a bit of Greg Lake's, in other words other musician/singers of the 1970s. Yep, I am presently listening to
Hocus Pocus by Focus. 8)

Query to self and/or administrators: I am wondering why I am not getting more email notification when subscribed to numerous threads (e.g. I have the "Notify me of replies" box checked)? However, perhaps it is best not to look a potential gift horse in the mouth as I get plenty of email as it is on a daily basis. ;)
Currently I have the Reefer Madness OST running up and down on my media player. Liked the movie, love the songs...

This is a song that's gone through my head many times when thinking about City of Heroes...
I am a Rock - Simon & Garfunkel:
A winter's day
In a deep and dark December;
I am alone,
Gazing from my window to the streets below
(https://images.weserv.nl/?url=www.cityofheroes.ca%2Fglobal%2Fincludes%2Fimages%2Fmt4%2Fwinter-event-2010%2Fwe_page_4.jpg)
On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I've built walls,
A fortress deep and mighty,
That none may penetrate.
I have no need of friendship; friendship causes pain.
It's laughter and it's loving I disdain.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
Don't talk of love,
But I've heard the words before;
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
I have my books
And my poetry to protect me;
I am shielded in my armor,
Hiding in my room, safe within my womb.
I touch no one and no one touches me.
I am a rock,
I am an island.
And a rock feels no pain;
And an island never cries.
When I think about City of Heroes, especially when I think about the rally and the successor projects, this is the song I keep thinking about. (And not just for the name, although it's pretty fitting.)
Freedom by Tegan and Sara (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I7ZyY3f-l0E)
Standin' on the edge of a crisis
We decide to raise our own voices
Consider that the sound is our own
And the fact our feet grow up from the ground
This is where I wanna be
This is who I wanna be
So they get my voice
But they can they can never get my soul, yes
Freedom, from the mighty sky to the ground
You've got the freedom to walk out if they drag you down
It's a little belated, but today I'm listening to a couple songs to commemorate the anniversary of Brass Monday (http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Brass_Monday).
The first is Brass in Pocket (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7Hy7uAb_eU) by the Pretenders, and the second is I Don't Like Mondays (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8yteMugRAc0) by The Boomtown Rats. (Those choices seem almost eerily appropriate, seeing how Nemesis is nothing if not a pretender, and... well, Boomtown. Nuff said.)
Although the events of that day (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8qsHZjrNEY) were unfortunate, they did eventually lead to the passage of the Citizen Crime Fighting Act (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBeT4ptY9sY), which for the most part was warmly welcomed, as the citizens were ready to start fighting for themselves (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JcMEFraE8A).
So this next song goes out to those original heroes. Without them none of ours might ever have gotten the chance to pick up the fight: It's My Turn To Fly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcnF1ioaBr4) by The Urge.
I think sometime this weekend me and my Freedom Phalanx buddies are going to pop into Steel Canyon, where the bulk of the battle took place, and do a little dancing in the street (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9G4jnaznUoQ).

This is a song i've heard many a time, however I could never quite catch the lyrics and find the name...till now.
It reminds me of the sense of loss and longing that the COH community has experienced since the closure..
Coldplay: Paradise.
When she was just a girl,
She expected the world,
But it flew away from her reach,
And bullets catch in her teeth.
Life goes on,
It gets so heavy,
The wheel breaks the butterfly.
Every tear, a waterfall.
In the night, the stormy night,
She closed her eyes.
In the night,
The stormy night,
Away she flied.
Chorus:
I dream of para-para-paradise,
Para-para-paradise,
Para-para-paradise,
Whoa-oh-oh oh-oooh oh-oh-oh....

And since the song's in german, here are the translated lyrics:
__________________________________________________________
Batman, Hulk and spider(-man) you have served your turn,
your time is up,
A new age begins,
Superman take the green lantern with you,
tell the punisher to finally f#ck off,
the fight against Rhianna you have miserably failed,
Britney Spears, Celine Dion, are no match for you,
the black eyed peas are being played all day,
only one lone superhero is still fighting against
Captain Metal
When you call him he he comes right away,
Captain Metal,
with 66000 Fon
Captain Metal
but Fon means dB now,
Captain Metal
the one-man-metal-army
How many times today have you asked yourself
why does the radio sound like a live show from your supermarket?
you hear Mariah Carey and you feel the hate
just call Captain Metal,
you can still count on him
Don't ask who he is, I explained that to you
a few seconds ago in the chorus
I figure you didn't listen right
so here again nice and slow to bang your head
Captain Metal
his name is program
Captain Metal
tougher than jean claude Van damme
Captain Metal
zero tolerance and no fair play
Captain Metal
the one-man-metal-army
Now look at them begging for their lifes
Captain Metal didn't have them on his list
Captain Metal
When you call him he he comes right away,
Captain Metal,
with 66000 Fon
Captain Metal
but Fon means dB now,
Captain Metal
the one-man-metal-army

Oh man oh man oh man... Just discovered a supergroup that I am absolutely, totally head-over-heels in love with.
First, some background... I am from the Nashville TN area, born and raised (literally) across the street where Bonnaroo is held these days (and my parents still live there, man their house shakes when the main stage is fired up). And I am exactly the right age to have been around for the first "Nashville Rock 'n' Roll" movement in the 80's.
So, yeah, I am still a major fanboy for Jason & The Scorchers, Webb Wilder, The Royal Court Of China, and the other names in that wave...
So...
There's a Nashville-rock-supergroup that I just discovered...
The Bluefields
Warner Hodges from Jason & The Scorchers
Joe Blanton from the Royal Court of China
Dan Baird from the Georgia Satellites
Brad Pemberton from the Black Crowes / Ryan Adams & The Cardinals
And if you know anything from any of those musicians, I am happy to report that the Bluefields sound *exactly* like what you think those 4 guys would sound like together. Loud, crude, southern hard rock at it's goofiest! What other band would do a love song to an amplifier, and perform it on acoustic instruments? Ha Ha! (Well, half of it, anyway.)
I've had their three CDs on constant rotation since buying them.

Baby Love by The Supremes,
I keep having this dream that I wrote and made famous the song "Baby Love", I didn't do either by the way. In my dream I turn to booze and start hating that song. My father insists on playing it over and over. I break every 45 he has, but I can't get him to stop playing it. Finally, I break down and realize that booze is killing me and I start singing along with the record. Fortunately, I wake up at that point.

"♫ blunt the knives and bend the forks, chip the cups and crack the plates."
"that's what Bilbe Baggins hates.♪"
Out of the ruins, out from the wreckage
Can't make the same mistakes this time
We are the children, the last generation
We are the ones they left behind
And I wonder when we are ever gonna change?
Living under the fear, till nothing else remains
So what do we do with our lives?
We leave only a mark.
Will our story shine like a light,
Or end in the dark?
Give it all or nothing!
We don't need another hero,
We don't need to know the way home
All we want is life beyond the Thunderdome..
