Sad and bored..

Ever since the shutdown i've been on a crusade to find something that does it for me.. Besides only two games for a few weeks nothing has struck that chord. Champions fell flat pretty fast, Neverwinter was terrible, Star Trek was alright.. I've played pretty much every mmo that exists over that last year. Nothing.

So now i'm fed up and was wondering how that COH recreation project was going. If it's still going at all. And also wondering of there's ANY possibility of getting the real COH back. Dumb question I guess but there's got to be something someone could do.

Pay a ridiculous amount of money?
Star Wars Galaxies is still running after shutdown because the playerbase literally RE made the entire game themselves somehow.
Why didn't we do that?
Guess I'm just rambling.
There's an empty hole in my mind and nothing has filled it.

I did pretty much the same as you with other games.

Nothing came close to the dynamics of CoH.

Until we find some way to get CoH back I'd recommend a game called The Secret World.

It's pretty good and free to play.

Why didn't we do that?

Technically, we did. Segs was being worked on way back around what, issue 4? And the S.C.O.R.E. folks have been working on super sekrit stuff ever since the announcement.

But the real difference between us and Galaxies, is that they spent years reverse engineering the servers before it had even shut down all because of a major update that a large population of the playerbase (often contested as the majority at the time) disagreed with. The servers while running a slightly different game functionally was still running to have packet catching software nab info from to rebuild things. We didn't get that luxury.

Technically yes, Segs has also had years to be worked on while the servers were still up as well, but as I understand it, Segs was being worked on by only one person. Galaxies had bunches of people, multiple teams in fact, all trying to accomplish the same thing. That right there makes a world of difference.

But yeah... I've been bouncing around MMOs as well, and most of them I've only logged in maybe once before I decided I didn't like it. For me at least, there's two driving factors to why I haven't found a new "home" yet.

First, they just aren't the same. No other community was so friendly and helpful(outside of PvP zones...) as this one, and teaming was never as scary here as it is in other MMOs. Here, if your team screwed up and everyone dropped, you got a little bit of debt, maybe bounced inspirations around to resurrect people, ran back (quickly) from the hospital, and went for round two. In other games you die, you gotta do a corpse run, your stats are lowered, your gear may or may not get stolen, you could lose some experience or worse lose levels... Suffice to say, dying wasn't an issue for us in City, so we were less "gun-ho" and more laid back.

Second, I don't know anyone in other games, so trying out new MMOs always feels like the first day of kindergarden all over again when it comes to grouping up or joining guilds... Don't know about you folks, but I don't make friends very easily, and I wasn't fond of kindergarden...

It costs to buy though, or did last time I checked.

I've been bumping between shadowrun returns, marvel alliance facebook game, and minecraft.

Yep, I'm an MMO nomad as well. Right now, I'm just farming on WOW to pass the time.

I'm hoping Elder Scrolls Online will be able to hold my attention for awhile.

I think the things that's keeping me from committing to any other MMOs are:

1. Character Customisation, I didn't really think it was that important. When I first started City of Heroes but it is. I mean, when I make a character in City of Heroes, it's mine no matter how Fugly it looks.

2. Solo ability, you can solo in other games but it doesn't seem. Like you can solo as well as you could in City of Heroes.

3. Instant missions, I like to farm but I don't like feeling like I'm in other peoples way. When I'm open world farming and I see other people around. I worry that I'm killing mobs for their quests, or Mobs that have MATs they need (which I also need or I wouldn't be farming them :P) So I usually stop and let them do their thing or move on to another spot. Sometimes, I help them kill mobs if it seems like their questing. Which slows my farming down, so instant mission would be way more efficient.

4. The Power sets, when grouping I don't like playing DPS (I never tank... of dear God). I like playing support but it gets boring after awhile. In City of Hereos, I could play healer, buffer, debuffer, or crowd control if I wanted to.

5. SG/VG bases. I'm a farmer, I need a place to store my loot. In City of Heroes, it wasn't too hard for someone to build a rather large SG base completely by themselves. I had more storage space than I ever really needed but it was nice having it. :)

Ironwolf is working on something right now. Look in the thread titled "New Efforts" for more details.

I'm still waiting for an MMO to Sing to me. ;)

I've been playing STO. the story keeps me interested... but it seems to utterly lack the social dynamic of COH, so it is not keeping me "involved" beyond playing through the story. it may as well just be a single player extension of fleet ops or bridge commander  or star fleet academy for me.

I was able to get most of my SG from City, The Omniscients, transferred over to Marvel Heroes.  We've been playing on there.  We're down a couple of core members who found the game not quite to their liking, but we have most of our old teammates from Justice there, and I've found other former City players through the game's Social chat.

So that's a start, if you're a fan of the Diablo/Diablo 2 interface.  The game had a rough start initially, but it's gotten a LOT better and is really holding its own!

Much like you, the loss of City of Heroes has hit me very hard.  I'd almost compare it to the loss of a family member.  Because, despite being only "online friends", I have lost touch with so many people it saddens me.

I have trying Champions Online, Star trek Online, DC Universe Online, and even played with Wildstar this past weekend.  None of those games compare to CoH.  City of Heroes seems to me to be the best of all the MMO's I've ever played.

If I can suggest anything, I'd say The Secret World is something you should look into.  it is NOT a clone of any other game, and will give you a brand new experience.

Look me up.  I'm "DinahMight", "Mahogany", and "Roadhog" there

I've been playing Lord Of The Rings Online (LOTRO) for a completely different flavor then my preferred superhero MMORPG. I must say it is different than other games I have played and the attention to detail is staggering on how gorgeous the detail to scenery is.  Plus they have an epic quest line that actually ties in with the quest of the Fellowship.

Dollhouse

My experience has been both interesting (to me) and troublesome. To be honest, The Secret World had already, prior to That Horrible Day, replaced CoH as my "main" MMO. TSW in many ways (setting, insanely great writing, immersion/RP support, and so forth) is the game of my dreams. But I still subbed to CoH, and still played (and enjoyed) it quite a lot, right up until the end. And good as it is, TSW has never become so much a part of my life as CoH.

Part of that's got little to do with either game. CoH happened at a pretty different point in my life. CoH was my first MMO, and I think that matters.

Part of it is community. Don't get me wrong: TSW has an excellent, mature community. But the CoH community is legendary for good reason.

So I can't really say I'm bored, since I play TSW and Defiance...and have enjoyed dabbling in a couple more since the shutdown. But sad? Damn right.

I've not tried Marvel Heroes but I'm glad to hear it's playable and that Justice players are still around.
