Yep.  Post #7 from Feb 25:

I would like to know too. Remember, I only served to provide introductions.

Yeah, but....today Nate posted on Facebook in response to a post from someone else about this whole "Statesman in MxM" thing:

They doing it so they can keep the IP like fox does with Fantastic 4(Hey, we made a #$%#$^ 3rd movie so you can't take the IP from us!).  I'm angered, to be honest, and very frustrated with them.  Unless proven otherwise(Such as deal making it and they get to keep Statesman or something) they betrayed us as far as I am concerned.

Here's to looking forward to the spiritual successors at least, so far they seem to be far farther along than the talks at this point.  Heck, Ship of heroes may be the game at this rate.

I think Fox has a contractual requirement to use the property rights or eventually lose the license for them.  It is a common licensing stipulation.  Rights owners don't want someone to license their property and then just sit on it.

But I'm pretty sure NCSoft owns the CoH IP outright.  They have no need or obligation to use the IP.  As the owner, they can sit on it forever.

It does look a little like dumpster diving: they went looking in the closet for IP they owned to see if anything would be appropriate to use for this new game.  But it does demonstrate why companies do not just sell off IP.  You simply never know when it might become useful.  Statesman (ne: Tyrant) just became useful.  And that means it isn't going anywhere.

Oh, and the idea of Emperor Cole coming to Paragon prime to save the world from the Battalion and then leaving that dimension?  Sounds so familiar...

NCSoft strikes again.

I guess Ship of Heroes or one of the other games made them get really worried so they pulled this...

MegaWatt

by 'this' one means rigging up one of the fallen from the game to wires and makeing it dance in a Pancakeing Pancakey MOBA......i hate them so.
If we set it on fire it'll burn....but that'd leave evidence...I KNOW ! COMPLETE ATOMIZATION! WOOOO!

I doubt they could be much less concerned about potential competition for a game they shuttered.  The only reason they will start to care about those spiritual successors is if the NCSoft lawyers decide there's a way to make money by suing them.

And from a different Facebook thread posted today, when asked about the negotiations: "That was always a long shot. I had not gotten an update from that group in over a year"

(So it's possible that, since Nate no longer has direct contact with that group, that they're still engaged in Very Very Hush Hush Wow That NDA Is Stricter Than Ever Top Secret Negotiations, but .... I'd say that's highly unlikely at this point)

I'm aware of that.  My point was that it's not from someone with current inside knowledge of the deal.

Yeah, this looks really bad.  If NCSoft is using the CoH IP now, it doesn't look like they have any plans to sell it.  I just find it odd that we haven't heard anything directly from the team to my knowledge.  Maybe I shouldn't find it odd; I don't know anywhere near enough about NDAs to say.  But I recall it being strongly suggested that if the deal went splat there should be some kind of semi-official word from their end.

I do wonder where Cailyn Alaynn is...

LateNights

I wonder if NC isn't considering CoH 2?

Very odd to use Tyrant as Statesman when plain old States would have done the job just fine...

If they were considering CoH2 (which they originally nixed back when Paragon was still working on CoH), I suspect they would have saved their new little back story blurb for the new game, instead of dumping it into Generic MOBA # 239.

I literally was just wondering the same thing myself.  Someone with a login on the Atlas Park Revival forums should pop in there and let them know what's going on.

Saw this like to a youtube video on MXM.  The purpose seems to be to introduce Statesman as a playable character in the moab.  It even uses the CoH theme song.  But pay close attention to the comments by the players visiting the site.  They range from major irritation to absolute rage.

Wow!   Going by the reactions, NCSoft had BETTER BE about to turn loose of the IP.

A lot of angry people out there, me being one of them, 156 dislikes since I last looked compared to the other vidoes for the game where there were more likes then dislikes! Interesting to see what the reaction will be... if any from NCSoft.

Sadly having a lot of dislikes on the one video tied to CoH IP will likely just discourage them from releasing more CoH/CoV characters in it. I don't think they care that we are upset still at the closure. This is a business move and they are trying to bring players into MxM, and if something is getting highly negative attention they will likely stop using it.

I'm not likely to play MxM as MOBAs don't really speak to me, but I will give it a load (if F2P) and do a couple of matches with States just to support the IP use. The hope here being that positive response to the character will make them think about the IP more. If they see lots of love maybe there will be hope for a CoH2, or a CoH Legacy. If they see nothing but hate they may go 'see we were right to keep that buried'.

I don't think NCSoft is even cognizant of these YouTube channels. Why would it even be on their radar?

I don't know what to think in this regard.  I'm uncertain how much of the reaction will register to them, what the reaction really is (diehard CoHers probably have a very different view from the larger community), or how they will interpret it.  I know that for me, inclusion of CoH characters is not much of a draw.  It's the gameplay and community that I miss, and I don't see MxM filling that need.

As for MOBAs, the only one I've tried is Heroes of the Storm.  In some ways I enjoyed the game, but the community...oh the humanity.  MOBA communities are one of the most toxic things on the planet, and from what I've heard HotS is actually one of the better ones.

I think that's pretty specific to the contracts Marvel used when they leased those properties to other studios.  An original property like CoX shouldn't have this issue.
