I have wondered what you can negotiate for 3 years about before you run out of subjects. I guess it would depend if contact is every week, once enery month or if 6 months goes by without anything happening. I dont think we will hear anything for a couple more years, I am not all that optimistic at this point.

I've been working as an adjunct trying to get full time for 12.5 years.  I have an interview today at 1:00 PM (currently 6:50 AM).  Three years comes out to next to nothing in my book.

As for the interview, here's hoping and praying it goes through!  :)

Professor, Lecturer or Instructor? Good luck with the interview :)

If I land it, I'll be overseeing the tutors at a local college.

We'll see what happens, I guess.  They said I should here back by the end of the week or start of next week.

I just hope I don't hear a "No" from it on my birthday on Friday.  :(  A "Yes" would be nice.

Think positive.  You will get it.  As my mice would say, "No Surrender!"

I'm trying to think positive, but a lot of the interview went a lot more negative or neutral than I'd have liked.  :(  Maybe I will hear good things, though.

Nothing special per se.  In fact some of the high energy particles are neutrons, some are protons, some are mesons, some are alpha particles (bare helium nuclei).  Ultimately, all of them can strike the nuclei of atoms in the silicon semiconductors.  The presentation mentions silicon itself and boron, a common semiconductor dopant.

There are different processes that can occur depending on the energy of the particles: high speed ones can just smash nuclei, shattering the nucleus into a lot of smaller bits.  Low speed neutrons can participate in neutron capture, causing atoms to undergo spontaneous fission.  Either way, an atom in the semiconductor that used to be this is now a pile of that, and those things are usually no longer fixed to the solid crystal.  As they move away from the impact site, the electrons that were bound to them also get free.  You then end up with free conduction electrons and/or valence hole moving around creating currents in the material.

Because semiconductors are engineered to have certain voltages here and there, these currents can be redirected, amplified, or cause spontaneous changes in the circuitry state. Move enough electrons into the right place in certain memory cells and that cell can energize: it can flip from a zero to a one (or vice versa).  Push them through the right place and they can trigger a cascade of other electrons and a transistor can turn on and get stuck on.

Short version: baryonic radiation (protons, neutrons, etc) can smash atomic nuclei.  Smashing atoms in a semiconductor tends to free electrons that were bound to that atom.  Those electrons can then move in the semiconductor.  Moving electrons is current, controlling current is what semiconductors do, messing that up can change what the circuits should be doing.

Thankyou. I did ask for it.

mmmm.  now ask her what solar wind is in reference to electricity.  I think you'll find it quite interesting.  and a little scary.

I find the interviews that go perfect are the ones I don't make it past while the ones I think I foobarred usually get the offer.  But for what it's worth, I think Adjunct professors are better than the lifers.  That, of course, is my opinion.  Here's the big bag of salt.  lol

"Big bag of salt?"  I don't understand the reference?  We talking "a grain of salt" sort of thing, or something else?  :)

And thank you for the kind reassurances, LadyVamp.  I appreciate it.  This afternoon and evening have been pretty hard on me emotionally because of it all.  I hope I get a positive call back soon.

Some traditions, its best not to ask too many questions.  Just make the traditional counter offering of a shoebox of raisins and don't make eye contact.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, but as LadyVamp has said stay positive, I know it's hard not too but try not to worry to much. One of my favourite sayings "Control the Controlables".

Positive thoughts for good news on your Birthday. ;)

I was going to elaborate on what she said with what I know. but I decided it would take too much typing and I'm lazy (not really I just have shoulder watchers who don't approve of me wasting time on forums). then when I had no shoulder watchers I decided it was too much hassle and I had lost interest so I just closed the tab that would have had a massive wall of text that really doesn't belong here in the first place.

plus I've been sick and have just recovered. At least mostly. Been weeks though. Last week and the week before were rough, put me in a really sour and half crazy mood, mostly because I had to work through it and had a limited diet of water, medicine bananas and 1 bowl of cereal and a small amount of rice. couldn't eat anything else cause it contained oil and this sickness apparently reproduces in oil in your throat. Oh did I also mention I'm allergic to tobacco? and everyone smokes everywhere here, they completely disregard signs and laws, they disregard the smoking rooms too and would rather smoke in the bathrooms, and in shops in the mall and everywhere else. so I felt like a million bucks I can tell you.

Smokers are jeeeeeerrks! (When they're smoking - I'm (sort of) sure they're perfectly nice otherwise)

I tried to get a set of buffs for Martial Arts for six years.  I was still working on two of them when the game shutdown.

I only used MA after Shields came out, so I'm not a long term victim of animation times/the other MA issues I remember you highlighting on the boards, but I can say that I did enjoy the hell out of my MA/Shield scrapper.  Especially since some friends ran Shield toons at the same time.

Mind you, with a couple of tanks and three scrappers Shield charging into a spawn it doesn't really matter what your other power set was...

The grain of salt was the reference but since my opinions tend to be strong, I figure it would take more than just a grain.

You no like cute, little, inoffensive rodents?  With the big, expressive eyes?  The ones with multi-function assault riffles?  With the cat cutter rounds designed to take down the toughest cat at 4000 meters?  nothing but bridge of nose right between eyes perfectly centered?  The ones that each think they could teach Boba Fett a thing or two about bounty hunting?

lol
