VMWare Player is free to use, and runs W10 perfectly well.

I haven't noticed any issues with Windows 10 and Virtual Box.

Finally got Win 10 back up to speed only to discover that something has scrogged Chrome 64. It now randomly crashes the PC on flash intensive pages on both of the desktops here. Back to Firefox for now!

Have they updated the additions now?

Cute but incorrect.

I'll presume you said that with a straight face.

Maybe you're talking about Windows 9?

I thought they were skipping windows 9 due to it being too similar to 8.

He is probably talking about the unnecessary snark. People who use Windows do get tired of being considered idiots and talked down to for not buying Macs or using freaking Linux.

The fact that it is installed and works with so many different kinds of hardware and software is frankly amazing. Microsoft makes mistakes, but overall has produced a operating system that works very well considering how many different types or hardware and software it must accomadate, not mention legacy hardware and software.

I need Windows for exactly 2 things: Running CoH (at the moment Titan Icon), and updating my 5-year-old Garmin Nuvi GPS.

Until I heard CoH was coming back, I had to swap out the HDD in my netbook to update the GPS (every 4 or 5 months it wasn't too painful). But building a new desktop in anticipation of CoH returning I took the cheapest possible option (A $29 Windows 7 COA) just so I could dual boot.

If CoH 2.0 is available for Ubuntu, I'll most likely never boot into Windows, and maybe find a different brand of GPS that updates some other way. Or who knows? maybe by then Garmin will offer an updater for Mac or Linux.

I know people have run CoH from Wine with partial success, but I'd rather spend $29 than struggle with that.

All that being said, I'm not trying to talk down to those who use Windows. I use Windows all day long for work, and it works fine. It's just that I don't want to pay Microsoft any more than I have to when there are several damned fine open-source operating systems that do 99% of what I need.

I'm all for people using whatever works for them. I started with Dos 3.0 (really Apple Dos to be truthful). I have spent my time on command line based operating systems and I just don't want to have to hassle with command lines, searching for drivers, and all the different iterations that come with open source. I remember DOS overlays and used to run Win286. It ran like crap, but it did run. The closest I might come to linux is with a steam machine and I hope I never have to do a thing to make it work.

Not interested in a Mac for various reasons, mostly philosophical, rather than hardware since they switched to intel based architecture away from Motorola.

The dropped Moto way before they jumped into bed with Intel. They were using IBM's PowerPC chips before Intel.

I think it's because Windows 9 evokes negative responses from German users.  Much like the Chevy Nova translated to 'no go' to our mexican friends.  ;)

I just can't ever bring my self to drop that much money on a Mac when I could spend half the money and get a PC equally as good, if not better. My most recent computer cost a little over a $1,000 for an i7, 32 Gig, 1 TB Hard drive Solid state internal, 1 TB external hard drive, and a Geforce 650 Ti.  Not the world's greatest super computer obviously.  But it does the trick for what I need and didn't cost an excessive amount of money to build(Would have been cheaper but I paid someone to put it all together for me after I ordered all the parts).  Meanwhile a Macbook with an I5, 4 GB, 500 MB Harddrive, and a Intel HD 4000 costs $1,044 through Best Buy.

I know it's not all about hardware. And I have nothing against Mac's either.  I just always was baffled at how much more they charge for apple product's.

The only thing I have noticed to be nice with Mac's is for multimedia.  In my particular case for producing.  Mac's seem to take the load of a DAW with heavy CPU usage quite well, and even an average Mac Book can have virtually no MIDI delay when working with a keyboard or controller. I have heard its nice for film editing as well, but I don't really know much about film editing so I couldn't say as to why people say that.

I believe (I have read it anyway) that it is because software writers in the past, despite being warned not to, used a checkver 9* with the wildcard so that many software packages would see Windows 9 as Win 95/98/99 (ME) ect and not as Win 9 proper. So they decided to skip Win 9 and go straight to Win 10.

With Ubuntu you do very, very little on the command line. Usually it's cutting and pasting from some bug post to fix an issue. But it's not like you need to learn to be a linux system administrator.

Heck, my non-techie wife has been using Ubuntu for 5 years now. I had to do some googling and cutting and pasting to get Spotify installed on her laptop, but other than that, it takes care of itself and she doesn't even need help. In fact she (early on) tried to go back to Windows, got a Trojan so nasty that it required re-installing the O/S, and made the decision to stick with Ubuntu. She's been happy (and virus free) ever since.

Why am I imagining an exploding BSOD?   ;D

The technical explanation for why Win 9 would be a no-no makes more sense than Germans getting confused between 'neun' (9) and 'nein' (No).

But, given how many monoglots run things in America, it wouldn't surprise me at all.  And I'd like to take a moment to thank my favorite foreign language teacher for teaching me the enjoyment of foreign languages, (and how to think in terms of multi-lingual puns) nearly 50 years ago.

I dunno enough about the technical details, but it seems to be a fairly widespread issue, a Windows update may have created a Flash conflict with Chrome 64.

I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."
