But, the military has no problems with movies that deal with alien invasions (Independence Day).

According to some of the behind the scenes stuff on the DVD, the military pulled out their official support of the movie because they wanted the references to the government secretly keeping alien bodies in Area 51 removed, and the producers refused.

On the other hand, the Air Force had strong ties to Stargate SG-1 for its entire run despite all of their references to Area 51, including a few generals and even the chief of staff making cameos, so who knows.

To Ironwolf and all the other heroes working to get our game back, THANK YOU!.

If NCSoft is involved....I DON'T CARE
If I must start all over....I DON'T CARE
If I must pay to play....I DON'T CARE

I just want to fly in my City and protect the citizens from the evil bad guys.
I love this game and sorely miss it.

Keep up the good work, Ironwolf.

Believe it or not, I actually want to start over from scratch. And I plan to spend a boatload on a subscription + costume packs + origin packs the second they let me.

This is exactly how I feel too.

I can't say for certain but from the length of this thread and by the traffic it shows I would venture to say there are many others too who don't post much but read these forums all the time that feel exactly the same way.

Like me. I don't post here very often, but I check in to see if there's been any news/progress every few weeks or so. I play a lot of MMOs, but CoX was my favorite. I still think of it with sadness at least once every single day.

I want our game back.

Agreed.  I've been watching the number of times the thread has been read, lately.  In the last 14 hours there have been over 1000 independent views.  I don't know how many are repeat viewers, but that's a good number of non-posters checking in to see if there has been a status update in less than one day.

On one of the SG1 season commentaries, apparently in NORAD there is a door labeled Stargate Command..... it leads to a janitor's closet.  Which I find awesome.  SG1 got a lot of cooperation with the military, from planes to subs

This is why I am playing the sub based Eve Online and shun "F2P" type MMOs. If I do bother with a F2P game I'll just go on a refuse to ever pay a dime.

Should CoH come back I am going to look over very carefully how they plan to fund the game. CoH's hybrid F2P was rather generous, too generous IMHO. I am a huge fan of the game I wanted them to collect money but most of what I wanted to do in the game I could as a Freemium. There was very little reason for me to pay sub fees.

Yes I read it quite a bit hear that anything less then a sub and sending donations is like being a welfare queen.  But seriously, its not your money so why do you care?  Its like complaining that the cheap seats in a stadium have too nice a view.

S.H.I.E.L.D. is an intelligence agency, not that complicated or unusual apart from their possession of super-tech and super-powered agents.
For an intelligence agency, they seem to possess a rather high number of ground troops, their own incredibly advanced air force, and numerous WMDs.  Has someone told them their focus is supposed to be intelligence?  I'm not sure they got that memo.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, SHIELD is not an intelligence agency.  Its an outgrowth of the SSR, which itself was a quasi-government agency that combined inteligence, counter-intelligence, strategic research, and special operations.  SHIELD is like if the UN Peacekeepers absorbed MI6 plus DARPA plus US JSOC.

Problem with that is though, that UN Peacekeepers usually stand and watch people killing and plundering, then tell them with strong language "you better not do that!"  Badum-tish!

If I remember Independence Day accurately, the group that was keeping secrets from people was represented by a pretty weasely character, who made it seem like they were just hiding it so no-one else could have it. It painted them in a self-serving and arrogant light. Whereas in SG-1, the secrets were being kept because That S*** Is Dangerous, and We Need To Protect The World. It indicates the same actions, but for far more positive reasons. That might have had some influence on the military's official opinion in each case.

But it's clearly not U.N. (Security Council doesn't hold the leash) which is why I suggested the alphabet soup of international quasi-organizations beginning with NATO.

Regardless, SHIELD is an inter-government organization that doesn't exist in our world that is needed to deal with the things in the Marvel Universe that don't exist in our world.
(Although the internet-enabled Islamist military/terrorist Quasi-organization/alliance/movement is becoming a pretty good real-life stand-in for HYDRA  :-\)

Leveling and alting was 80% of the fun for me, any game that wants to be successful in being a spiritual successor to CoH needs to cater to both of us.
100% agreed.   That's exactly what I loved about CoH.   Two different people could play dramatically different and still have a blast.

I think leasing the IP is what people are hanging up on as it still implies a reliance on NCsoft. Which I feel could be a legit concern. Admittedly, I don't know much about the business end of things.
I'm glad it was cleared up that NCSoft is SELLING the IP.    That "leasing" thing was forming a big question mark above my head.

However...they are leasing the game engine, right?   So your question could be applied to that with regard to the classic version of CoH running in maintenance mode.

Quote from: Felderburg on January 24, 2015, 03:51:58 AM
I'm still wondering what will keep whoever is in charge of the IP wanting to lease it to the producers of the perpetual I23 CoH. NCsoft or not, if they pull that permission, it's game over, man.
My first question there would be why would they ever pull permission to use the IP after going through all the trouble to buy it?

Game had plenty of other reasons to subscribe. Stop pretending like incarnate powers is somehow the only thing that kept players in VIP.
If I remember right, when I had to go F2P for a while, I had everything except Incarnates, my base, and access to the the O-portal.    My vet rewards got me everything else.   Pretty good deal really.   I feel like I was rewarded nicely for years of subbing.

Indeed, that's what I've been saying as well.  I'd happily fork over $100+ for that, no problem.

We had three accounts in our house when the game closed. We have already set aside 100$ per for each on the CHANCE that we will get to rebuy the sets and things that made this game addictive.

Sub? Of course I will. Hell, I'll start paying a sub before the game relaunches if it would help.

Sure, I know that not everyone agrees with this, but I don't care. I'll spend the money I earn as I please as foolish or as wisely as I choose. Same as everyone else.

I have bills to pay and stuff. I would be willing to preorder some sort of pack for the deluxe/collector's edition ingame extras and maybe some veteran rewards, but, if all of that exceeded maybe £20, I would be apprehensive. I love this game, but I'm not going to lie, I am not made of money. :(
Yeah, us people on a budget are in the mix too.    Let's ease up on throwing around big Ben numbers.   I'm definitely onboard with paying a one-time fee for a bundle though.    I want to get my two accounts up and running and reward the people behind all this.   Just kinda hoping it's something I can afford.    I threw $50 at CoT for instance.   Doing that for two accounts would be a hefty chunk of a night's work as a musician.

The Marvel TV Series "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." and "Agent Carter" both explore and define this.
