Y'know, that was my favorite costume piece in ANY game.

I'd put together a fire/shield brute (with plans to rely heavily on the fire sword type powers, so it would look more like a sword user) with a black and orange costume that looked like cooling lava, flaming shield, the works. I couldn't get any variant of Blaze, so after trying for a while I decided to add the shoulder kitty, which I'd been wanting to use in a costume for a really long time.

This is exactly what I was talking about a few pages ago when I explained why I don't play tanks or defenders. Everyone KNOWS the "right way" to play them and aren't bashful about telling you how wrong you are. Every time I think about playing one I run across discussions like this on the forums and come to my senses.

Offering unsolicited build advice is rude. It's like telling someone they are disciplining their children wrong. Even if you are right they certainly won't appreciate it and hooray! You just ruined their day! Well done you!

If you can't stand the way someone is playing a defender, just one star them and move on. Or just play one "the right way" and show all the schlubs how it's done. I actually learned a lot by watching expert players do their thing and then asking a few questions between missions.

I have a hard time seeing how offering unsolicited advice to a teammate would be rude if it were offered in a nice way. If I saw a teammate with an obviously sub-par build, I wouldn't simply want to stay silent or one-star them, especially if they were new to the game. I'd look at their badges, and then engage them in a friendly conversation via /tells asking them how they enjoyed their build, etc. If they wanted to talk about it fine, if not, I'd back off. I wouldn't actually tell them what I thought of their build unless it seemed welcome, but I would usually throw something out there like "you might want to look into Fortitude and see if it fit into your build, it is really good". I wouldn't just offer unsolicited advice, I'd offer IOs and INF as well. Of course, if someone doesn't care whether their build is "good" that's fine with me too.

The flip side is, in forums where people are discussing their builds I don't see anything wrong or rude with talking about ineffective or effective builds. Again, if someone has fun with a build, it doesn't matter what other people think of it. At the same time, that doesn't mean other people can't discuss what they think is effective or ineffective. If you want to be a "pure healer" that doesn't take or slot any blasts and picks redundant power pool powers over really great buffs like Fortitude, and you enjoy playing that way, who am I to tell you what you should consider fun? That doesn't change how effective the build is, or whether a build that intentionally chooses subpar powers over really good powers is a good model for other players.

Sometimes I see "interesting choices" so I will sometimes take the discussion private as to the build choice. Doing public advice is often rude, but there are times when it *is* necessary. I had a grav controller on a team who would spam D-Shift but had absolutely no idea how the power worked. He was wondering why folks on the team were getting so angry. One private tell later, the problem was solved and I got a tell later thanking me for the help. Again, its situational, and it did help that I knew the gravity set well enough to know about d-shift. There are players who are "button mashers" who feel a power button sitting there not pressed is there mocking them and a thought of level 12 power > than a level 8 power. Was it wrong for me to do unsolicited advice there? Good question, I lean to yes it was, because in this case the situation called for it.

I had another situation where I was on a kin defender and I was having a hard time healing a blaster because he had no idea how transfusion works and the few times someone did get close enough he would use ++KB power thrust. So, despite pleas from the entire team he did what he wanted to and vengeance got use every time it recharged. Despite begging for a rez, I said "sorry, I don't have that power but you are welcome to be Bernie while I TP your body around for vengeance". I was going to suggest combining 3 of the same insp to make an awaken but I think most of the team was annoyed enough that if we did say anything it was going to be ignored anyways.

I think I missed this. You could rate people in the game? O.o

Yeah, it was only for your benefit, but it'd tag someone's global account with a star rating and you could put in a comment to say why you gave that rating.  It was all stored in a text file that anyone who kept their CoH install around would stilll have.

Minotaur

In all things bawling people out in public may make you feel better, but it's rude and unnecessary most of the time. Sending a tell is better. There are some builds that are just so bad, they imperil the team, in those cases I'll be asked in tells by other team members "Why haven't you kicked ..." and I'll say I'm already talking to them.

Being the tank, taunting like mad and not having status protection gets people killed, so yes I'll comment. Normally it's just ignorance and they're happy to take the advice.

Being a FF toon, having no ally bubbles but all the repels and constantly blowing stuff across the room off the tank can also get people killed, again I'll comment.

Being a tank without taunt depends on the tank, not all of them need it outside of a few niche situations, I'll have a look at them in action first, but usually I'm playing the tank.

I was just responding to the same post. Its not always an easy thing because some folks overreact and go "nuts" over the littlest of things. I had one guy go nuts because my emp cast the Fortitude buff on him. Apparently he plays the game to look at his character and didn't like the red glow on his head.  :P Well, he got his wish I never buffed him again and he got a 1 star and a note saying he has "issues" with fort or any buffs that mask or distort how his character looks.

I had a petless mastermind join the team but this was a veteran player who I have teamed with before. When I asked, it was because they wanted a "pistols"/Force Field defender and was happy it was possible to make one redside with a thugs/FF MM. (This was before side swapping and the pistols set being added). The player did buffs, used temp powers for damage and had plenty of leadership so while not optimal, they were certainly contributing in a positive way.

All I can say tonight is once this is over either way - I would like a nice big apology from the Facebook crowd - not that it will happen but still.
...
The folks here on the board have been great. The Facebook group is going hog wild. You don't hoax people giving them your real street address and phone number. I understand the frenzy that having hope is causing - stay the course.

Personally I think you should keep a list of folks who owe you an apology and post it to the Facebook groups when things are over -- just for the LOLs -- but I can be a bit of a jerk (polite term) online (comes from hanging out on Fark all these years)

The public is strange.  Working with the public even stranger.  People--even the ones you are trying to help  will spit in your eye and blame you for not ducking.

I am probably late and beating the dead horse on the subject, but I say no updates to the dozens of riff-raff Facebook groups.  Titans Network is the home of the Project Hail Mary Task Force and that's where the updates stay.  This places OWNS the message.  You cannot control the random groups of Facebook, you can only request (and prepare to duck).

However, The Facebook Crowd may wander this way:

1.) Make a LOCKED and POSTED thread at the TOP OF FORUM for just Iron Wolf to post to and link all questions to that spot.  If he updates it bi-weekly, that's probably enough.  If it's short and dated within the last couple of weeks -- good enough.  If it becomes too long or as entangled as this thread people will not be able to follow.  The public likes a short and sweet message.

2.) Turn this thread into CITY OF HEROES SPECULATION and that's what it is... speculation.  The army of Titan Moderators can snub any new threads on "what's the status" and point to #1.  If anyone starts a new speculation thread they can snub that one and point to this... Maybe every dozen pages or so a form-letter is posted into the thread to say "SPECULATION... GO HERE <<LINK>> FOR OFFICIAL WORD.... "

Anyways, I have to say thanks again to everyone trying to make a go of this.  I religiously check this thread 2x-40x a day.

I've never been numbered among the cool kids, and it's been decades since I was a kid. But, even though my sister wanted me to join Facebook so that we could play Words with Friends, I haven't; I'm too put off by FB's many - and highly-publicized - privacy problems. They'd have to massively clean up their act, to the point of being roundly praised for it, before I'd consider joining.

I believe the 'cool kids' wouldn't be the ones causing the issue, because they are, you know, cool.

Which is why we got the all caps spasms or whatever from that particular crowd.

They either did already, or they never used it to begin with. The problem-causing crowd on FB probably didn't catch on to that yet.
We were heroes. We were villains. At the end of the world we all fought as one. It's what we did that defines us.
The end occurred pretty much as we predicted: all servers redlining until midnight... and then no servers to go around.

Somewhere beyond time and space, if you look hard you might find a flash of silver trailing crimson: a lone lost Spartan on his way home.

I can't locate any *functional* archives of the comics online. The archived version of the main comic page from old CoH site points to a bunch of dead ftp links ( http://web.archive.org/web/20121014173246/http://na.cityofheroes.com/en/media-and-downloads/comic-archive/ ).

That being said, three years ago I fortunately decided to save almost every one of those PDFs from that page to my harddrive (I'm only missing the two Special Edition ones). So if the new owners of CoH or somebody else official-ish want to make them available and have some problems locating them, they can always toss me a line. :)
