(re-purposing the hero mantra):  Villain style

We are Villains!
We gather in the dark places no police will follow.
We stand in the doorway, and no hero may pass.
We live for conquering the City, we die for no cause but our own.

Nawce!  :)

I think he was just horny and trying to sell records...

Funniest thing I heard with that song was on CNN, "Anthony Bourdain: Part's Unknown", where in Libya, the locals used that song for music in a marry go round.

So let's say everythiing goes the way we'd want, and a deal is made and the New Devs get the property by the end of August.

Assuming that NcSoft isn't able to cough up a working copy of the game and the New Devs only get a disk image of the game, the snapshot, how long would it take them to make a working copy of the game out of that?

Would it be plausible to have something up and running in six months? A year? Somewhere in between or maybe longer?

I'm just curious. :D

A couple of months, maybe? Depends on whether they get character data as well.

In just two days, a new donut shop will come to Mobile, AL called "Lickin' Good Donuts". The chain comes from the Louisiana area, if I'm not mistaken. Looking forward to learning how they do things as well.

We don't have anyplace called that here in New Orleans. That has to be from somewhere further up north, likely Sheveport.

Pretty sure it is. I used an old image I'd pulled from the forums to make the joke graphic and now that I think about it, I think it was one of yours.

Btw, NCSOFT seems to still have at least partial COH-era NCSOFT account information.

On a whim yesterday, I tried logging into my COH-era NCSOFT account via their webpage. They've since changed their account name format to an email-based one, rather than old simple user name system, but it did remember my old account user name.

Their new password requirements meant that it immediately asked me to change my old password, using my old security questions to verify, and once I'd changed my password I couldn't do anything else (it told me that the game I'd created it no longer existed).

But.

It did know my account name, email, and security questions.

Don't know whether there's enough to get old COH accounts reassigned to their characters on the game image, but...

What's with all the speculation about CoH2 being in a different area than Paragon City somehow?

I thought the whole point was to rebuild CoH (because the engine is a mess) so they can actually have something to work with/build off of.  Basically CoH implemented in a sane way.

Hope they keep the in-jokes intact when transitioning to the Unreal Engine. ;)

I can assure you, my good man, that NCSoft is most certainly "down with the streets". Word up, my homie, as it were.

Do you really think that there are no coders out there who have an idea of the internal data structure of the powers?

Ultimately, it doesn't matter.  Of course there are programmers who have an idea and or might be willing to attempt it.  That isn't really the issue here.  In the end, none of it mattesr as it's been stated point blank that the goal is to get the game up and running with no development past it's current state.

Could that change?  Absolutely.  But right now, the team is working on buying the game, getting it up and running and then moving directly over to CoH2 (which as far as has been expressed), includes porting over to a new engine.  It may be in their best interest to try and force some new content into the old engine (financially) at which point, I'm sure they'll do that.  But right now with the way things are, what's currently on the table and the amount of work that would be required, it's not a fiscally responsible decision to focus on the old game development wise.  Aside from getting the game up and running.
Reminder: No game = No data, no characters...nothing.  However, no data/characters != No game.

I'm very much afraid that I must disagree with the judgement of many good people regarding Krispy Kreme donuts.  I find them over prepared, too chewy, and with a not-very-good flavor -- they are an amazing product but I don't find them worth the calories.  People in my office frequently bring in fresh boxes in the morning and I just give them a pass.

Just to be clear I DO find well prepared bakery donuts to be worth the calories -- there is a bakery on the east side of Columbus that some of our East side commuters bring in occasionally -- glazed, raised -- absolute heaven that melts in your mouth -- ahhh now I'm hungry.

Yeah, we have Dunkin Donuts...but, here near the Canadian border, even Dunkin Donuts are hard to find.
Near the Canadian border... DO YOU HAVE TIMBITS? I MISS TIMBITS SO BAD!!! (Lived in Toronto for two years. Became addicted. Gotta have my double-double and timbits!)

I found krispee kreme donuts to be decidedly meh. I lived beside a bakery for years which beat them easily, and most tim hortons donuts are more appealing. Not to mention the timbits. ;)

Timbits themselves don't delight me, but Tim Horton's can have surprisingly good, tasty donuts (for a chain) -- I think generally better than Dunkin (though we have few of those around now)

Quote from: Deadflame2 on July 22, 2014, 10:28:27 PMOf course it doesn't sound unreasonable when you erroneously assume it's as simple as copy and pasting previous powers.
I'm not making any assumptions about how difficult hacking the code would be: I have absolutely no idea if it is or isn't. Nobody does at this point really. What I was stating was I found the concept of using existing animation for other powers reasonable since a number are already used on multiple powers.

QuotePower customization (which is actually just recoloring) did not change the animations.
Power customization was not limited to recoloring. It also included (later on) granting a number of powers alternate animations: Various blasts could be configured to allow a one hand or two hand attack animation, several martial arts powers had the option to display as either a punch or kick, etc.

QuoteThat's also ignoring the very big assumption that anything at all can be altered in any way.  From numbers to animations to power names etc.
It is an assumption either way and I don't see a reason to lock down with a particular view when just theorizing. I do hope certain elements are reasonably available for editing, but certainly wouldn't make any money bets on it. What I will say is that in my opinion (based on interaction with other products) editing an existing value (fixing a typo in some text, adjusting a fixed number in a calculation) should be possible even in compiled code, though the challenge of locating and adjusting such things in a sea of what probably looks like gibberish (hex values and such) would likely make it an inefficient use of time and resources.
