Yeah it definitely came to me just popped up and I was like well if we are most likely having the game at Issue 24 why not possibly call it that.

I like it.

They are most definitely not in a SQL database. That would be rather silly, since powers data is static and doesn't change outside of patches; and since both client and server have a copy of it.

Actually, that's how EQ does it...there's a file that keeps track of the spells on the client machine, and a version for the server has to be imported into the database to work properly. Yes, I found this out the hard way...the import is necessary.

It may be bad design, I certainly don't have the expertise to say one way or the other, but at least for EQ it was necessary for everything to work.

(Early on EQ was "trusting" and that was abused ruthlessly.)

If you're talking about an emulator, a lot of emulators are written by amateurs who like to shove everything in a sql database because... well no good reason really other than the authors had a hammer called mysql so every problem became a database.

I know for sure the wow emulators I've seen work that way, but the official game servers run by Blizzard do not.

I very much doubt that SQL is used by anything Cryptic touched any more than absolutely necessary: http://www.slideshare.net/coderanger/sql-considered-harmful

For the record I disagree with their stance for structured data -- something like an auction house would be an ideal case for SQL if leveraged properly. However for static data that never changes, especially for powers data which is highly hierarchical in nature, trying to force it into a relational schema would be a lot of pain for zero benefit.

Looks like you'll have to get a new avatar image there!

My favorite dedication to people like that from the end of the fourth (and not final) season of one of my favorite shows:

You let your zombie mastermind reanimate one old lady and people just never let it go...
that makes sense especially if it launches with Issue 24.. because that was the title for Issue 24
Wow. That is actually pretty appropriate all things considered. :)

Glad to see another fan of Babylon 5! :)  Long live the Rangers!

You're not the first... But then again, I don't think I am either.  I've mentioned that before... somewhere in this thread.  And others...

Funny that.  I've been re-watching B5 on DVD.  I'm mid way through season 4 at the moment.

So when a Donut turns lvl 38, will it get the hamburger APP option?

https://images.weserv.nl/?url=spotontalent.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2012%2F01%2FDonut-Burger-8380.jpg

Yeah, shapeshifting should definately be a tier 9. In a future update we'll give the donut a "swap shape" power where it can choose between three different shapes. The pastry power pool that unlocks at 41 has to be developed as well but we gotta let King Cupcake decide who his liutenants are... I hear Mr Danish is a good contender for the spot. Not sure anyone wants his vanilla goop-shield though.

I can't wait to hear about incarnate donut powers.

Who ever said that...what an ass. I miss all my grandparents, parents and other loved ones that are dead and if carping about it would bring them back that would be my full time job. But that's not possible. But returning CoH is. While it's no where near a substitute it helps take the edge off.

You can be a superhero and brood about dead family at the same time!

Aah yes. Incarnate powers. You're gonna love those. Obviously I can't discuss them yet, that'd be a complete spoiler for the endgame content. Like the brownie invasion.

From the MMORPG dictionary at MMO.com: "MOB is an old programming acronym of Mobile Object Block. Mobs are all computer controlled characters in the game. You should likely use some other term such as monster, creep, or bad guy."

But, not being a programmer, I always use it to refer to a group of PvE opponents.

I had no idea haha.
