I've never known the word "gimp" to be offensive unless you use it in a way that's deliberately a slur.  It's sort of like "gay"--if you're describing someone who is homosexual, I don't know anyone who finds it offensive, and if fact, it's the word most of them use to describe themselves.  If you're using it as a synonym for "stupid", such as in, "That movie was so gay..." (assuming you're not talking about a movie that is literally about gay people), then it is offensive.

I've always known it to just mean crippled, with no negative connotation.  I've actually heard people who are disabled say things like, "I have a gimp right leg because of the accident."  Looking at the Webster's Dictionary definition of the word, I don't see anything indicating that it's offensive.  The Wiktionary definition has one use of it marked derogatory, if it's used to mean "A name-calling word, generally for a person who is perceived to be inept, deficient or peculiar."  I can see why that would be considered offensive, but I don't think that means that the word used in other contexts is verboten.

Anyone who is physically disabled want to weigh in?

Not speaking from personal experience here, but generally speaking, "gimp" is one of those words, like "lame" or "retarded" (or for that matter "idiot", "imbecile" or "moron", all of which used to be medical terms for developmentally delayed children) that has fallen victim to the "euphemism treadmill". That is to say, it's been used as a slur often enough that its negative connotations now outweigh its literal meaning. Nobody ever says "I gimped my character" in a neutral sense; it's always explicitly meant to imply uselessness, weakness, or bad decisions on the part of the player. It's a term I feel awkward using, personally, although I'd prefer not to turn this thread into a debate as to whether one should use it or not because those never end well. :) But as an answer to your question, I'd say that it's a word that's difficult to use in a neutral sense these days.

I first noticed this while waiting to try and take a rikti gunship down. Hope I get to do that again, it was awesome.

They don't have all the information, but they might have enough to be used as a key if the character data is found without the account data to link it up. I don't think it would be worth the extra development time or be fair to do so, but I imagine some people don't care about either of those things.

Without the account information as well, that's still not enough to make those characters usable.  Consider:  The account data will likely have a "resolver" table for account wide item unlocks, the character will have items it's got in its inventory, each item will have its own entry in an item table and that item would need to exist in the account "resolver" table. If that entry isn't there, the item is invalid for that character.

They would essentially have to write scripts to either grant people those items in their new accounts, or strip all unlockables from the characters.  This is not an insignificant thing to do, and then you STILL have the issue that only a small number of people have said exported chars anyway.

If they DID do this, I would expect them to charge a fee for it, and not allow it during relaunch period.

Which wouldn't at all be unreasonable.  However, by the time they would even be in a position to attempt something like this....most would already have recreated their toons multiple times over and essentially be where they "left off".
Reminder: No game = No data, no characters...nothing.  However, no data/characters != No game.

Wow, this thread. I was doing some replies about defenders and tanks, then BAM! pages.
Jeez.
Ok, current topic
Reasonably sure if what they get is a "Photocopy" of the game, they'd be able to plug it in and we'd get our toons back. If what they get is the full meal deal, that's when problems would occur with account data. If it's a choice between getting our toons back, and having new issues hit live, I'd go with having new issues hitting live.

Good one. But I prefer "The horse has died, been vivisected, resurrected by unholy powers into a soulless abomination, killed again and processed into glue (which, ominously enough, occasionally spontaneously reforms into the shape of a horse)."
We were heroes. We were villains. At the end of the world we all fought as one. It's what we did that defines us.
The end occurred pretty much as we predicted: all servers redlining until midnight... and then no servers to go around.

Somewhere beyond time and space, if you look hard you might find a flash of silver trailing crimson: a lone lost Spartan on his way home.

And on another completely different note.. someone somewhere has everything we need.. this is my opinion. and not fact.. Im just saying I know companies I have worked with.. there is always SOMEONE who downloads and makes copies of everything.. even when they are not supposed to..

How big are the files needed in this hypothetical compulsive downloading situation? I mean, I'm under the impression that there are many terabytes of data, and I can't imagine it being cheap or timely to download all the stuff needed to get the game up again. And how would you even do that? Just plug in your external hard drive, and hope no one official sees it while the game downloads?

1. The minute you say "That's not  how to play the game!" You are automatically wrong. There really was no one way to play or one style that suits everyone. What you are really saying is "That's not how I play." Good for you. Here's a cracker.

That's not how you tell people they're wrong. You're supposed to give cookies!

I did see several people claiming there was a different intent than was expressed in the first post in this conversation.   This is what was actually said just so there are no misunderstandings:
Quote from: Burnt Toast on July 15, 2014, 07:05:22 PM
I'm hoping CoH comes back...and a part of me wants it back as a blank slate.. no account info etc. I look forward to logging in on day one and seeing a bunch of low level characters. Would love to have huge groups of people in The Hollows and Kings Row. [Emphasis added by Felderburg]
So I'm complaining that someone expressed a hope that we all lose our characters (that does include me) for a personal desire to have more people in the low levels.   I cannot imagine a more selfish thing to hope for.

1. Only a part of Burnt Toast wants it to come back as a blank slate. Per the post here, Burnt Toast does want characters back: http://www.cohtitan.com/forum/index.php/topic,9675.msg150529.html#msg150529 In other posts, Burnt Toast has expressed that while he wants characters back, his desires for people playing low level stuff more are ****IF**** it's a clean slate. Burnt Toast does not want a clean slate, but if it happens, well, what're you gonna do? Them's the breaks.

2. I will also be unhappy to "lose" my characters. However, they still "live" on in my head, and I can recreate them. I understand that they won't be the "same" characters that I leveled up before, but conceptually and intellectually, for me, they are the same. Are you unable to do that? I am curious.

* The fact that if you had enough Inf, you could almost always find even rare stuff on the market to buy. I am very concerned that supply being so limited upon the relaunch, how will I be able to snag 5 Luck of the Gamblers off the market reliably? Or a full Decimation set? Karma? Kismet? A low level +Stealth IO?

It'll be no different than when the market was first introduced. I can't imagine the new devs would put up phantom sales for anyone to purchase, just so that players would have a "fully stocked market" to come back to.

People will farm just like they did before, and sell the items, just like they did before. It might take a while for the market to get stocked well, but it will happen.

Jumping into the Defender chat a bit late, My very first Lvl 50 was a Emp/psi Super healer/Buffer The Healing Rainbow (As seen in the Spectacular Sparky issue 11 http://cohcomicindex.com/home/cohcomicindex/images/f/f9/Spectacular_Sparky_11.pdf))

He was built using no attack powers other than the ones you got for Vet rewards, but getting every singer support power I could get my hands on while hovering very slowly behind an unkillable tank. As fun as he was I'm not sure if I would remake him back to 50, he kinda was made for the sake of getting the Keldians as fast as possible, but who knows. If I do I would try to build him so that I could adrenalin boost everyone all the time.

Or when you're running a PUG team with a friend and someone gets on you about they're style of play or that they're not doing well and tries to get you to kick them so one of their friends can join... had that one happen more than once. Sometimes even sending me private messages so my friend can't hear them in chat but what they don't know is it's a real life friend and we're in the same room. That always made me laugh.

That is slimy! I seldom led teams but I wouldn't kick anybody based on what some person sent me. I might kick him if he became obnoxious about it. But I would probably suggest that he go and team with his friend and if two spots open up, I'll send a tell.

I'd be lying if I said all the excitement that's built up over this week so far hasn't rekindled my interest in all things superhero... I tended to avoid such things a lot after the shutdown because of the related sadness and because it only would spark a train of thought and inspiration I couldn't pursue without the game.

Now I'm getting caught up on the DC animated films I've missed since then. Watching Justice League War right now and loving it. I happened to also be out of the loop for a few years on the whole DC Comics retcon deal so smartening up on that as well has been pretty interesting.  ;D

My characters never stopped being mine, nor have I stopped RPing them with my SG. I just lost their most recent "character sheet", but since I still have all their MIDS builds, they can easily be recreated.

That said, in regards to just having an image of the game, it might be better, IMO, to get i24 up and running, and then concentrate on COH2 with a new game engine, better dev tools, and a chance to expand outside of Paragon proper (but still keep the main city).

We have the post-sunset AMA information. Use it!

As for Vet Rewards/Super Packs... I know I had almost everything from those and used them. My main had a lot of costume pieces from the bought packs. I would happily buy these again, but discounted. Maybe have a "Buy It All" for a discount at open and have options to buy piecemeal after, say, the first 90 days.

Sub with FTP, and if we get the Paragon Market back, resume as it was. That model WAS profitable.

I still have my old email, and remember my login and password. I would miss my high level builds, but now I can run them through newer content they never had a chance to play.

@TonyV, as a disabled person, gimp can have a very negative connotation. I have had a broken knee for over 20 years. When it hurts too much and I have to use my cane, being called "Gimpy," even in jest, is hurtful. However it can be used to indicated someone who is "slow on the take" or an inefficient character build (either intentionally or not).

Also, I build characters to fit concepts, not for Optimum Cosmic Power. Some may seem "gimped", and my Emp/Psi Defender was no healbot. I quit a team in the Hollows once because they told me "don't attack, just spam your heal." Screw that. I play for fun.

If I play a defender, it will likely be a solo friendly build. How about some suggestions?

What's a good defender set/combo for soloing?

(See? Soliciting build advice. That's how I indicate that I want "help" with the game. Just an FYI.) :D

In regards to the acquisition -

Is is short sighted to hope that the Secret Cabal of Buyers (tm) go for the box in front of them (the imaged disc and work ahead ) as opposed to being drawn into waiting to see what's behind door number two (something that may or may not be found)?

As others have noted , there may be <ahem> other copies available of that information, and once the deal is transacted, could be surreptitiously transferred and utilized.

This is just me wanting this to go down. I'm not in high finance, I only audit them. But my gut tells me to get our foot in the door firmly and roll the dice on anything shaking out later.

Just my opinion.

And I used to Leroy with my Rad/Rad / psi defender all the time. Just ask anyone who ran the Keyes Badge runs on Freedom with Atomic Saint. It was a sight to behold.
More than a few pages ago, Wolf stated that the buyers were shown the image of the game and it was in poor shape (I think that is the word he used). That drove the price down, so the buyers are trying to get more, what that means I do not know, but if I was to hazard a guess. They are trying to get the paragon market. I know for sure they want the ip for city of heroes 2.
One day the Phoenix will rise again.

My favorite "Are you a healer?" requests were always when I was playing my Ice/Ice Blaster. People standing right next to me while asking that question always made me laugh.

Zombie Hustler

Rikti Mothership Raids were a lot of fun. Early on, when everyone was doing them, I even ended up leading/forming a few teams with my villainous main, Great White Hunter, which was pretty cool. They died off for a bit (as most do, when the novelty wears off), but they were pretty regular things again by the end there, as I recall. At least I remember doing a lot more of them again and there seeming to be no shortage of participants. (As I'm recalling now, it was for the shard drops, I think. Or some other form of currency that you could get for Incarnate stuff- U'kon G'rai dropped a special form of currency, too, IIRC. It was actually kind of a clever way to renew interest in the raids, in any event.)

I also enjoyed the Rikti Invasions, but again, it really depended on level of participation. When you had a whole bunch of folks in-zone who were teaming, they could be a mess of fun. When it was just a few (or one) in-zone, as happened often on my beloved Redside, it wasn't a whole lot of fun, and could be hazardous to your health.  :gonk:

I was always more of a casual fan of DC heroes so I'm not too crossed about it. I was more into Marvel growing up but I haven't even bought any comics since Marvel did the Onslaught X-Men story. Even then, I've read here and there about some things they did between then and now and I was usually of the "Okay, whatever, that's cool" attitude.

I find whenever I feel the urge to start reading a comic series, I look back into the old days for something I never read to grab my attention... so the latest one I read was the original 1981 Savage She-Hulk series which was in no way campy like they made her out to be later on. She's a way more compelling character when taken serious.
