what if the server equipment was wiped though... or recommissioned...

I would be shocked if it hadn't. Who leaves perfectly good hardware laying around doing nothing?

The real question is what happened to the database backups.

The Star Wars thing was "explained" as: The Kessel Run was thus: the transport ship was trying to catch a moving target ship to make a delivery.  So the faster the transport ship, the shorter the distance it took to catch the moving target.  But Lucas believed, Parsec to be a measure of speed, the explanation was made up just so the line in Star Wars made some semblance of sense.

The best explanation I've heard, and rumor has it might be true based on stage directions on the original script (or it could be made up, but I still like it!) is that the line was wrong on purpose. It was intended to show that Han was BSing, trying to sound impressive to a backwater yokel despite not really knowing what he was talking about.

Wow... I love your avatar.  Who did it and do they take commissions?

(sorry for the tangent.  Liberty server here)

It's by David Nakayama - the character is called Blue Phoenix, form the picture called "Spirit of Paragon" - http://www.deviantart.com/art/Spirit-of-Paragon-340120576 - David has kindly donated her to the "Heroes and Villains" project, so you'll be seeing her - and the spirit of Paragon - in Titan City ;)

That was David Nakayama (of CoH fame). It was concept art that he made while working for Paragon Studios, but since it wasn't released before the shutdown, it's not technically owned by NCsoft. He offered to allow whichever successor project got off the ground the rights to use the art (or maybe character?).

I used CIT before they even joined the Titan network! But then I left for a long ol' time, and came back. Now I edit the wiki.

I'm working on sorting the Lore AMAs so that questions are easily found and linked: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Lore_AMA/Sorted Tell me what you think!

How would you do that? Just say "Nictus wanted to live longer, so they started munching other Kheldians?" I imagine it would be a bit more nuanced than that... (and I am aware of your RP - I was the one that linked your story on the Wiki, despite some reservations about it being proper to include on the Wiki, because it was an excellent depiction of the FTL travel method (and the reservations were mostly overcome by the fact the the entire Kheldian article is noted as being essentially copied from a Memphis Bill's guide)).

It's worth noting that the Lore AMA indicates that the Battalion play an integral part in the reasons Kheldians are on Earth. It would be mighty interesting if the Nictus either gave the technology of their Kheldian life-sucking machine to the Battalion, or were helped along to its development by the Battalion... either way, the Battalion benefit by taking the machine and adapting it to power their spaceships with Kheldian energy.

...then again, that whole macguffin sort of falls apart when you realize that after the Kheldian genocide, the Battalion would need a new way to power their ships. Unless it was just a temporary thing anyways, to save their "normal" fuel reserves while they used up the Kheldians.

Well, I'd need to work on it, probably for a few weeks, to get all the kinks out and fill any plot holes (unlike the devs who left plot craters), but I'm fairly confident I could work it so that they have a more reasonable life span (because really, how the hell can you even develop beyond barbarism if your scientists only live 8 years), and yet still make it profitable for some to have developed the Nictus process.

;D

I find myself thinking about playing all throughout the day now.   I'll be away from home and get that, "I think I'll log on and play when I get home" thought.

The first group who tried to buy the game was the Paragon Studio buyout with VV and company and they were buying the game still running.
The second group never got past the preliminary stages before they stopped - I am not sure if NCSoft stopped or they did - I believe it was NCSoft seeing they were not capable of running the game.

Why did they cut a profitable game?

Paragon Studios was making roughly $10 million a year gross. They also were making 2 other games as well as developing CoH. Paragon Studios was not profitable, they were losing money due to the other 2 titles. During this time NCSoft merged with Nexon another multi-billion dollar company. They changed focus to consolidating their assests. CoH was the game making the least money with Paragon Studios losing money. They closed Paragon Studios. CoH was Paragon Studios and when they shut - there was no one to develop the game.

So the 2 things were not seperated by NCSoft. They could have waded through how many people they needed to keep it running - but they chose simply to close the studio and also cut management. Downix also reminded that NC Interactive - whose head was Chris Chung a friend of the game was closed shortly before. I was very angry at NCSoft but once you see what was happening it makes sense. They were pouring way too much money in management of something that technically was losing money.

Yeah, except this doesn't make much sense to me. You say they were losing money because of two other project, but how companies like NC and Perfect World are supposed to work is they REQUEST their teams to make another game. Then it is their job to supply them with money and supplies to make that game while taking care of distributing it and advertising on it, for an investment return once it's released. Why would you set up a group with TWO new projects on top of a current one and then say they are losing money, which you are supposed to supply them. Even if those were true it would make more sense to cancel those projects and things would balance back out cause the game was more profitable than those other two projects. Also I remember those figures stating that GW 1 was less profitable than CoH and just released a new sequel, so with a replacement for their less profitable game that would have been the better choice along with cancelling those other two projects.

I find it hard to swallow that they'd cancel the game right after Paragon tried to buy themselves out as "just coincidence" and "just business." They proved with GW that they could have just set it into maintenance mode. As I've said before in other threads, right now this makes no business sense. The closure brought them bad press even in their own country, stock prices fell, and they still have to renew the copyright on this IP or lose it, which is a cost they aren't making back cause they aren't making anything off of it. I don't think we'll ever know what really happened, but I don't believe this was a clean cut business choice, to me this makes no sense and in the end costs more with no profit to keep down then it does to have kept it up with a smaller team or in maintenance mode peaked in on by say, the wildstar team or something.
Please don't send blind requests in games to me, I learned to ignore them in CoX, no offense meant. (this is only here until I can figure out how to put it in my actual profile on here.)

What if you can buy a one time purchase and get everything - for free? You won't need paragon points then! Then if they do make a store for extras - BONUS!

I think that would be the way to go, Ironwolf.  Just keep it simple.  Instead of nickel and diming players...just a nice, virtual box fee with all inclusive pass.

x 100,000 players and that's some 'kickstarter.' ;)

I'd happily pay a 'one off' £40 for 'everything' (and still pay subs of £5-6 a month...) all access pass to Legacy CoH and 'Renaissance' CoH 2.

Want to get back the old player base, the ones that never tried it...and poach MMO players from other franchises.

Make it simple...make it compelling.

Issue 24 is CoH at it's finest.  That should keep the Legacy players going for at least two years.  (Ten, if you're me...)

It's the way it plays, folks...

Azrael.

PS.  I'm liking the idea of a rocking and rolling Tri-form build IO'd to death...  Now if only there was a good IO guide to an all conquering Peace Bringer...

If the new team decides to keep it simple, then I'll simply pay them.  I will be part of the crew that crashes those payment servers in a "Take my money!" frenzy as soon as I have the opportunity.

If they make it more complex, they still get my money.

Oddly enough my main hobby since the late 90's has been e-fedding, where you're literally roleplaying a professional wrestler or eight. Probably the only thing that I've done where my main character has been a male.

I'm also weird in that I had to RETIRE from e-wrestling for a few years due to a legitimate injury, that being the development of chronic joint pain in my hands and feet. It's under control with medication.

Since about 1998, I've done local play e-feds with friends starting way back on WWF War Zone for the first PlayStation. I still recreate most of those wrestlers today on the modern games. It's funny when I go back and look at the silly ideas we used to have for wrestler personas from those days and really fun to try and update them to the modern day with the current games or figure out ways for them to age and how they would have changed over 16 years.

Also, I had a female Scrapper whose day job was a pro-wrestler. Her outfit seen here is modeled after Atsushi Onita's typical attire back in the FMW when fighting in Deathmatches.

What's funny, is I've been playing FFXIV because a friend bought it for me and the slow pace reminded me of Paragon, and while SO MUCH of the content is forced solo on the way to 50 (which was a familiar number to be eager for) the characters are not built to be solo, so you're constantly relying on poorly programmed AI backup or crossing your fingers they designed this mission with that in mind.

Honestly, if you want a class good for soloing, level the mages.

Arcanist and the SMN job offshoot have tank pets, DPS damage, and the ability to self heal, the SCH offshoot loses the tank pet for superior healing, and can still do good DPS with Cleric Stance (From CNJ) up.

CNJ/WHM has self-healing and can put out decent DPS with Cleric Stance, and at 45 gets the best AoE in the game, but you'll need to learn to toggle Cleric Stance to heal and they aren't built at all for long fights (Poor MP regen options.)

THM/BLM has good damage, and pulling Physick from Arcanist allows you to heal yourself (Preferably under Umbral Ice). I'd say it's less survivable than the other two, but it generally kills faster.
