But not 15,000. I had done the same thing. Almost exclusively to people I knew after past experiences with the gimme gimmes.

Of course not 15,000. Mainly because I didn't have that kind of in-game cash though--not because of a lack of wanting them to have a leg up. If I had it, I would have given it.

Bottom line: I wouldn't care.

Agreed. I could are less if someone could remake my build. It was on the def forums, I just don't want it to be one click away.

 PLEASE  EXCUSE THIS RANT...

There is something that I feel needs to be said. Maybe its just bothering me personally but I have to get it off my chest. There is a sentiment not just here, but extending back to the game itself, the original forums, the Facebook pages etc etc that the "people" who made fully IO'd builds were all min/max people who didnt enjoy playing the game, but were these people who were only chasing numbers. Somehow there STILL exists this underlying premise that if you actually enjoyed PLAYING the game then you wouldn't mind starting over.

And I have to freely admit.. This attitude upsets me.. First of all it makes specific generalizations about a group of players that may or many not be true.

Secondly it says to me (and again Im only talking about me).. That you really dont care about the game. You should just go play with a calculator..

Thirdly I see a lot of this.. Well I play for CONCEPT.. and my CONCEPT is more important that my build.. and in a roundabout way it says.. Well of you care so much about your build.. then you really dont care about concepts.. and therefore you have missed the JOY of playing CoH..

   Well lets examine that theory....

Here is a concept.. Here is the brief background I wrote for a character named Sureshot an Arch/Devices character

The agent code named Sureshot is a former CIA operative sent to infiltrate the Malta Group and to gather intel on the Knives of Artemis. His true affiliation is as member of the META (Military Engineered Tactically Advanced) group. Unofficially funded by the FIST, the META operation utilizes new nanomachine technology and genome projects to create artifical super powered individuals. The META project has had varying degrees of success, however they have been unable to control what abilities will manifest in each test subject. SureShot developed heightened vision and an uncanny sense of accuracy. He is accuracy is so acute he is able to locate what he calls "Shatterpoints" in objects, weak points he can target to inflict greater damage. His weapons, armor and cloaking device are variations of Malta and Knives technology. Sureshot while employing his targeting drone and eyepiece can even see "stealthed" targets which has prompted META to begin to use him on numerous Arachnos missions.

This background affected his costume. He carries a laser bow and has the reticle eyepiece with the single laser that shows through it during combat. He flies through the use of rocket boots.

This background affects his build. He is slotted for Accuracy and To Hit Buff. He has placed quite a few slots into Tactics, Targeting Drone, giving him a 38% to hit buff and +60 percent accuracy at all times. He has the Increased Perception IO as well. Pretty much he hits... a lot.. His Battle Cry is

" Bullseye Direct Hit Dont Miss"

He has extra stealth built into his build to simulate technology taken from the Knives of Artemis. He has a constant damage buff of +35% which simulates his ability to see "shatterpoints" and inflict more damage.

Even his Incarmate power choices of the Robotic Drone pets (which look like Targeting Drones) and the Interface which is a damage resistance debuff proc are a function of his CONCEPT..

So when I am told that character data might not be available.. Its not just " waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah" my mega powerful build will be gone.. Its not just about the expense and time I put into it... and Its not about being "greedy".

Im not even going to go into great detail about the ridicule taken for making such a crappy blaster that doesnt have Aim and Build up and why devices sucks.. You should have take Arch/Mental... thats much better.. blah blah blah.

And its not about being some Min/Max guy who would rather play with a calculator and crunch numbers

This was the CONCEPT.. The build was around the concept.. The costume choices around the concept. The power choices around the concept.

Its about the loss of a labor of love. Its about the loss of something special to me...

So forgive me if I dont want to start over.. I will if I have to.. but dont call me greedy.. or selfish... or anything else because I would rather play with the creations that gave me a sense of satisfaction, joy and accomplishment..

And please dont assume that because a certain character MIGHT have what you might consider a super IO'd crazy influence build that I am any less a player, and less of a concept builder and any less a member of the community..

Also and last point.. I hate the assumption that.. OH your on a level 50.. therefore you completely ignore the rest of the game.. and therefore you will ignore those new players..

Well that is a completely false and in my opinion IGNORANT assumption..

As a level 50 I have invited many new players into a SG so they have people to play with.. I have helped many a new player with builds.. and advice.. I have dropped IO's... and GOOD IO's on random players.. I have given out loads of random influence to players.. I am a fan of Bio's sometimes I will stand around and read people Bio and Give out influence to the ones I really like.. Ive taken Higher level toons and run with lowbies in the sewers giving them buffs along the way to help them level.. etc etc etc etc.. so being a level 50 doesnt necessarily disconnect you from the rest of the community..

Well I think my rant is over.. and thats all out my system... yeah.. I can breathe easier now..

Thank you for your time and your support..

I can't speak for anyone else, but I had a guide that had been viewed a total of over 15,000 times as well as multiple dozens of people who sent me messages on the forums and in-game that my guide was what they referenced when they built their characters...

Soooo, I'll wager there were quite a few of "my toon" running around multiple servers... :P

My answer? I wouldn't care. I place a FAR higher value on the years I spent carefully making my characters than worrying about whether or not anyone wants to copy me.

If the choice was "can't get your characters" vs "you can get your characters, but other people might have copies," I'll opt for the latter. It'll save me a boatload of time and effort, and I can get back to what I was doing when the game shut down: leading high-level TF's, helping people with builds, and playing Incarnate material.

Yes, of course you would. It would absolutely ruin the experience for other people, but that's OK because you got your characters back. This is probably why people think "I want it all" is selfish and greedy. It should be "I want it all at any cost, damn the price!"

Actually, you're chief among the people who (I suspect purposefully at this point, since you've done nothing but attack my viewpoint from the beginning) don't seem to "get" what I am saying.

Let me ask you something: do you speak for everyone else? I certainly don't. I am speaking for myself. So, I wouldn't be so presumptuous to think that giving people an option to get a few vet rewards/IOs/costume unlocks would "ruin their experience." I don't know that.

And, I hate to break it to you...

...neither do you. ;)

I just know what would make me happy. And I'm allowed to speak my opinion on a forum where it is encouraged in a community of vets--of which I have earned my place over the last 9 years.

I agree with you in alot of areas about people who assume those of us like myself who min maxes as somehow not enjoying the game.  It's a very big misconception.  It's called the scrub phenomenon, I know, some will deride me, get as angry as it gets at me for saying the word scrub in the way everyone knows, but thing is, it's like some people have no tolerance of those of us who do min/max themselves.  They accuse us of not having fun, and even accuse us of not liking others for having fun.  Truth is, thats not true.

We want people to have fun with the games they play, the thing is, most min/maxers are not stop having fun guys, we just enjoy min maxing.  We are having fun ourselves.  Most top end players in many games actually have fun.  The funny thing is, the scrub, the person who constantly gets mad at us for min/maxing or winning, is that, they are no different than those few at the top ends of play that are intollerant of those who don't.  They are no different.  Both players are try hards, but just take things to seriously, the only difference the scrub has to a try hard stop having fun guy, is that the scrub takes playing casually to seriously to the point of not having fun anymore themselves.

Most players are not excessively vocal about it like that.

I am a min maxer, yes, but I don't believe thats the only way to play the game.  I will discourage really bad tactics, true, but 90% of the time, it's a tactic that ignores 90% of the powers in set combination, I don't think every single tactic but my own is bad, but tactics that just don't work in the game and very clearly have silly problems I do discourage.  It's city of heroes, know.  But see, i'm not someone who's going to demand everyone play all whatever powersets I play.  I even played empathy myself, I just know neglecting 90% of your powers is bad play, which is true of any powerset.

Alot of my characters I had at 50 and whatnot did have full incarnate powers, IOs and whatnot to.  Make no mistake I would want them back, if it's not possible to have them back then I could start over and i'm willing to do so.  But just because I am a min maxer, doesn't mean i'm going to tell you to stop having fun.  That is, unless your playing a pure healer on a team taking little to no damage that never attacks or buffs.  Then odds are, since i'll be forming my teams on the reset, I'll likely boot ya cause your just not doing anything for the team.  Not because I'm a stop having fun guy, I ain't, but because I know your not doing anything for the team.

Yes, we do have a vote -- that's exactly why I've been advocating. The people who are working on this are reading this thread, and how hard they fight to get certain things back may very well depend on their perception of how the community will react.

I for one believe the community deserves no less than a perfect scenario. If we get less, so be it, but that's no reason to cut corners and not even try.
If that statement is true then:
For me, I fear a Pet Cemetary scenario.  The cat you loved is back but it didn't come back quite right....  I23/I24 would probably be the "COX comes back whole" scenario for me.  And personally, if the game comes back like a bad cat, I may be done with gaming.

(And on another note, I hope we get (viewable) servers back, whether with old names or new.  I got so tired of other MMO's invisible servers.)

How odd.

The reason I, at least, had as much as I did was that I enjoyed playing the game.  I played the game, I got stuff, I sold stuff, I got better stuff, I played in Mids, I played the game, I had fun.

CoX allowed for a multitude of playstyles.  The diversity of the game was part of its appeal.  If it hadn't had leveling and TFs and bases and IOs and the market and badges and Ouroboros and the costume creator and alts galore and all the other different things to focus on and different ways to play, I don't know that most of us would feel as strongly about it as we do.

Maybe there were players who only min-maxed.  If so, I didn't know them, and I'd be slightly surprised if they haven't found other game systems that are more abusable since the shutdown regardless.

My characters were carrying around billions in inf and purples and the like I wouldn't want a hundred copies of any them running around.

Besides,  didn't you already get the message a few pages back that a lot of players wouldn't like having copies of their characters running around when you brought up this tact before?

Sure I got the message.  But it comes down to a question of risk vs. reward.

IF we get character data back and it's easily tied to players -- no problem

IF we get character data back and it's NOT easily tied to players

1. Nobody gets characters back

2. or Everybody can get characters back but also folks can get character copies they don't own

3. or We try to give people back the characters they can prove they had WHICH MEANS somebody who could be working on something else is spending their time trying to decide if somebody else has properly identified their character, researching Sentinel files (or whatever), resolving complaints that the wrong player has the wrong character, resolving complaints that the restored character didn't come back with what all the owner thought they should have etc. etc. etc.

My ONLY horse in this race is that I don't want the new company's efforts to come to a smashing halt over character restoration disputes.

I'm not suggesting you are being defensive, because there are people who have that sort of attitude (and the reverse). But it could just say that the person cares more about their concept then their build, and have nothing (roundabout or otherwise) to say about their opinion of how you or anybody else plays.
