I didn't really like it either, but I have to agree with Golden Girl on this one. I want it back, warts and all. So what happened, happened.

However, if they could be restored story wise in some fashion, I wouldn't mind. This is a comic book superhero game after all and death is...flexible. Just look at freakin' Hal Jordon!

Failing that, they should add a statue to the fallen as they have for so many other heroes. Independence Port seems like it could be a good place.
I was not saying to change what happened. I would like to see a story arc  written returning them to life. It has happened many times in the comics and there really isn't any reason it couldn't happen here.

the one thing that didn't sit well with me was being tossed in with the new players and losing some of my characters, another thing is if someone bought going rouge they should have gotten first ward and nightward for free or a reduced amount. The monthly arcs should have free for everyone, that also goes along the line of the new missions in brick should be free for all not just the subs.
One day the Phoenix will rise again.

Someone needs to pay for the developers, servers and bandwidth.

Rebuilding Galaxy would be ok, as long as it was as a higher level zone - returning it to a starter zone would be pointless, and go against the pre-shutdown plans of Paragon Studios.
The same goes for Statesman and Sister Psyche - reviving them would be a clear sign that the restarted game was being hijacked by a group of fans, and not following the pre-shutdown plans - I'd much prefer to see the devs' idea of Tyrant being redeemed and taking up Statesman's mantle - that's got a lot of scope for interesting story development, as has Recluse refocusing Arachnos with the help of Red Widow after the loss of his arch-enemy. Plus, Positron's leadership problems, Penny Yin's continuing development in the Freedom Phalanx, and her potential conflict of loyalties with the Clockwork King, along with Manticore seemingly heading towards full on vigilante status are all very interesting story hooks that rely on Statesman and Sister Psyche being gone.
the revived game needs to be a proper continuation, not a disguised retcon.

I totally agree with this.  The stories up until closure should probably remain untouched; however, the new devs wouldn't have to follow the same direction the story was going in.  I did like the idea of Cole/Tyrant taking up Statesman position in an effort to redeem himself and rally the players.  Like GG said, the stories are already there and could be expanded on if the devs choose to do so.

But whatever the buyers choose to do will have to be.  We don't get a deciding vote until it is a done deal and even then, they don't have to take these suggestions.  We should just be happy to get the game back and hope they don't change things beyond recognition.  I don't think this will be a problem though; as Ironwolf had mentioned, they are supposed to be fans themselves.

Wasn't Manticore the one who designed most of the good story arcs early on? If he was having him and the "Lore Bible" I heard he maintained back would be a huge boon to any new team.

Tyrant taking up the role of Statesman was a terrible idea - truly awful.

There is plenty of scope for the return of Statesman and Sister Psyche to a resurrected and rejuvenated game .... and it would be awesome.

The removal of those 2 was a low point in the game - IMHO.

You know there is one question that I don't believe has been asked in our little love fest.

If we do get the game back, what happens to the spiritual inheritor projects?

Back when the game was closing the though was that these were last resorts and would only go forward if the game closed. Well, it did and they did.

Many, I believe, they have said they would play them all. It's fine sentiment. One I kinda share. After all, I did work on one for a while.

Still, I know that despite my desire, I know I won't have time to play, master and enjoy 4 potential Superhero MMO's. I'm highly predisposed to stick with CoH. It has given me so much and I know I love it. Also all my forays into other games have left me cold and jaded.

That said, I'll certainly try them IF they come out. Also, they seem to rely on volunteer efforts to a large degree. Will that pool be as committed when they can log into CoH?

I just don't know.

(I am not fishing for trouble or trying to cause static. I'm genuinely curious as to what the community thinks and also anyone who is involved if they would care to comment)

Has anyone given thought to this?

Yeah, I have been thinking about this also. But to me CoH is always CoH. It is not the looks, its the inside that matters. So if I will sign up for any successors it depends on how the inside of the game is meaning the soul and atmosphere. Often when remaking games with better Graphics the inside is forgotten.

I mean, there are so many Little things in CoH that adds tremendously to the atmosphere of the game. The NPC for example how they wave at you when passing. The awsome Music fits the urban setting perfectly. The incredible zone design. There is a special feeling to this game that will be hard to reproduce. Standing at some back Alley looking at the surrounding and what is going on. The windows of the apartments are different, some have half curtains and some shadows that makes you wonder whats going on inside :)

There is one thing I would like to request of whoever eventually does buy the game....and I know it's a long shot, but I feel I have to ask.

When the game does come back (because I refuse to accept that it's gone forever), if it ever starts to die down to the point that it becomes completely financially impossible to continue running the game, have some way in place for players to run private servers. It's a time I dread happening again. I don't even like thinking about that eventuality. But someday it may happen, and to prevent the loss of the game again, I would love to see the devs come out and say "Hey, we can't run it anymore, but we're going to let the community keep it alive." Open source it if possible, charge for licenses if necessary, just let those who truly love the game keep it alive in a meaningful way. Having such a plan in place before that time would prevent a situation like all the hatred for NCsoft that we see rampant in the community.

I know asking now may not reach whoever finally buys the game, but I had to ask.

Agree.  Strongly.  I find it very irking I have the client which I bought multiple times and I can't even play it single player locally.  When it gets shut down again, whenever that is, Do The Right Thing.

So I started looking over my old Mids builds and what not...and it got me pondering.

Does anyone else feel like they would be a total noob and slightly lost on Day 2 if the game ever relaunches?

Especially if we have to start brand new accounts from scratch and I don't have my old builds to work from.

I will be totally and completely blind as far as putting together a decent IOed build.

Hopefully it'll be like riding a bike, and I'll remember once I hear the music as I load in.

You aren't alone.  I hope I can remember how to respond to a tell.  I've forgotten so much.  But it will be fun relearning.

Honestly what truely matters if your talking about story development, is character development.  A lack of character development, or say even a character changing the world around them without changing themselves, is generally very poor story telling.  Characters need to change over time as human beings do in real life as the story and the world changes.  Realistically a person who goes completely unchanged is a person who never actually had much happen to them.  When a character never changes in a story regardless of what happens, it's usually because the author is never allowing for any trade off for that character and it quickly goes down the shallow path of everyone being an empty puppet for that character, the mary sue.

See Sister psyche dying, in many ways, allowed for alot of character development for Manticore as a character.  Ideally either way, Manticore has to develop as a character now.  Statesman dying means Ms. Liberty has to deal with that as well.  We could see either turn into a villain, or a more mature experienced hero, or even more neutral.  It actually allows for alot of growth and change for the Freedom Phalanx in general.

The same could be said even of Nemesis.  By issue 23 we already saw a few directions for him in Mender Silos.  How does he get there?  What happened to him to change him so much when he's been a chess player for so long?  Odds are from what I was seeing, the writers wanted to see him change somewhere.

I could use a few tv show/book analogy to, to drive the point.  Breaking Bad isn't a series glorifying Meth and the drug underworld, it's instead about the dire consequences of that trade and the true dangers of it.  Walter White went from being a very good intended individual to a very malicious, lonely, insufferable asshole who, ultimately you feel sorry for those who were his friends rather than feeling sorry for him.  He became the villain.

Likewise, you see the same trend in the ice and fire series by George R. R. Martin, and you see it go both ways with most characters.

Just the same character development was something done for your character in the hero to vigilantee and vigilante to villain missions, just as much as the villain to rogue and then rogue to hero missions to.  Though they aren't imo the best for roleplaying, but then writing such missions I cannot see that as having been easy.
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

It just dawned upon me the three things I'd like to see the new Dev's do at some point.

1. Rebuild Galaxy City.

2. Revive Statesmen (as a Hero in all of his glory.)

3. Revive Sister Psyche (as above)

Give both of them New Task Forces.

Ok so technically thats four or five things.

I think its a given since they began the rebuilding of Faultline to rebuild Galaxy City at some point would make sense.

I wasn't happy about killing off Statesman and Sister Psyche, but I don't think their deaths should be "undone".  The story needs to move forward.  If the devs came up with some clever way to bring either or both back I'd be okay with that but I wouldn't do it lightly.  Unless Jack Emmert is one of the devs, in which case I'd think Statesman's epic return would be pretty much a certainty.  :)

Felderburg

As far as stories go, Positron did say that in the event CoH was brought back, they reserved the right to change everything in the Lore AMA. So the "Coming Storm" could still be something non-Battalion.

I thought the idea of bringing Tyrant back as States was pretty cool. I suppose the story could be left ambiguous to everyone, both in-game and out: States appears, saves the day, rallies people, then disappears again - is it Tyrant? Statesman returned? No one (but the devs) would ever know....

I'm of the opinion, though, that I24 should be released, then CoH 2 should get going. Seems to me it'd be a lot easier to build a newer MMO than trying to build off of what was by all accounts a mess, as far as code was concerned - plus the new devs could tell their own stories. Although I would be interested to see whether CoH2 will be a "reality warped and got weird, now it's Paragon City 3 years later" or just a complete reboot. It would be pretty hard to build a lot of lore from scratch, but it also would seem... I don't know, cheap? ... to re-use characters, and just go a different direction with them starting at the end of the Rikti War, or something like that.

The contents there are borrowed from someone else's Google Drive, and I copied them onto mine. Per the wiki page, Jim Hague (alias?) worked on a tabletop version of CoH, and was given the bible et al. as part of that, and released them after the shutdown.

Positron? Could be okay, but only if he had some of the others there to keep him in check. He's got good ideas about some things, but others that make Jack on his worst day look positively sensible. If he'd had his way, the Incarnate game would have been 5 times grindier with multiple tiers of salvages and complex currencies galore to work your way up through. I wouldn't want him as the sole voice of "experience" running the show.

I'm glad I'm not the only one leery of Positron's ideas. His column (http://www.mmorpg.com/features.cfm/view/columns/show/45_Matt-Miller) definitely showcased a different mentality than I would prefer as far as MMOs are concerned.
I used CIT before they even joined the Titan network! But then I left for a long ol' time, and came back. Now I edit the wiki.

I'm working on sorting the Lore AMAs so that questions are easily found and linked: http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Lore_AMA/Sorted Tell me what you think!

That depends on the particulars of the project, of the nature of the return, etc. Too many variables to know at this point.
