If you created a character in COH when you were 5, you couldn't be older than... what, 14?

Lord. When I was 14 the Beatles had just broken up...
"The Beatles" were  a rock band, considered possibly the most pivotal and influential...
A "Rock Band" was a kind of musical group that made "Rock n' Roll" records...
A "Record" was a kind of analog file storage medium that encoded musical tracks in vinyl "grooves"

Never mind. (God, I'm old)

Okay, I have to admit that this actually made me laugh out loud.  I have now received some strange looks from around my office...  ;D
Patiently lurking from the shadows...

I just recently purchased a turntable so I could play the small number of records I kept from my old vinyl collection.  Yep, still has all the pops and crackles, but there's just something about placing a needle on that track and physically seeing the medium rotating. :)  Fun.
Kids these days dont know what they missed.  Some album covers actually had some incredible artwork.  MP3s... bleh.

Yep, I'm old too.  Join the club. :)

I think it is the entire experience of playing vinyl that is satisfying, not the sonic quality of the music. Sonically, MP3's if they are not too compressed deliver better sound (unless you have very clean vinyl and a high end turntable). CD's and SCAD, better still.

That said, I have all my music in MP3 for convenience.  When I want to listen to music I use an actual CD player hooked to an actual stereo system with real speakers. My old ears may not hear much difference but I enjoy the entire process of playing the CD over listening on my PC (even though it is 5.1 and has a dedicated sound card)

When I was 14 the Bicentennial was a year way and I had just started playing White Box D&D.

How awesome would it have been if CoH had been around then?

...and they wrote their own music and -- I know this will seem hard to believe -- actually played their own instruments...

Ah, those were the days...

And so do 90% of all current bands and musicians.  And even when the Beatles were around people had ghost writers and ghost players (Just to clarify I am NOT saying the Beatles had ghost writers/players).  Don't get me wrong the Beatles are too legit to quit.  However as musician I felt obligated to say that music is still alive and well and just as real as it always was.

I agree, if you want the experience of vinyl.  That crisp white noise in the background, messing with the pitch to get it right, ever so carefully removing it from the carboard sleeve in a bio-hazard suit.  However if you want quality, its MP3 all day everyday.  CD's are just about the same quality as mp3's though. I am pretty sure they are both bounced and written at 44,100 samples per second.

Okay. I'll play too.

When I was 14 Jimmy Carter was elected, and KISS's "Destroyer" album came out. I thought it was cool, but then I grew up and developed musical taste. Now I hate KISS.

Blondeshell

When I was 14, this debuted on TV.

Golden Girl

When I was 14, CoH was already in production :P

I would reverse your statement and say that MP3 sound nearly as good as CD's. It depends how much compression is used. It is lossy format, so some information that is present on the CD is lost during conversion. However, most of the information that is lost is in frequencies that you can't hear anyway. But if you compress down to less than 192 KbPS, you may notice a loss in quality.

If you want the exact quality as a CD you need encode into a lossless format like FLAC or even ALAC (if you must). OGG is very popular, just be aware that it is actually a container format (like MKV) so some things can have trouble with it. Lossless files are larger than something like MP3 (even at 320 KbPS) but far smaller than an extracted WAV file.

I rip everything at 320, transcode when I must at the same bitrate and some things I encode lossless because I don't want anything lost, even things I can't consciously hear.

Interestingly, the audio on DVD's is compressed as well to about half the size of uncompressed audio. Even so it sounds pretty freaking awesome.

Can we please get back on the topic of CoH?  :)

I check this thread every few days and it sucks to sift through the non-CoH talk.

Clearly, as yet, there is no news, so we're just biding our time until IronWolf shares another update,
or the folks hidden behind the curtain post something revealing...

In the meanwhile...

When I was 14 ...  :P

The Oil Embargo was wrapping up, Nixon was refusing to hand over "certain tapes", Steve Miller's "Joker"
hit #1, the F-16 was a prototype making it's first test flights, SkyLab 4's astronauts returned to Earth,
"Blazing Saddles" was a new movie out in theatres and Hank Aaron passed Babe Ruth's HR record.

Oh, and a new NFL football team started up -- the Seattle Seahawks.

I ain't no spring chicken either...    ;D

Cheers,
4

Spoilsport! We've only been off topic for a few hours. :) It seems a shame that your first post is telling us to stay on topic. But I'll help you out. Check out my signature and it will tell you the status. That way you won't have to read anything else!
