Since apparently (almost) anything goes in this thread, I'll throw this out there. I do believe Arcana and others have already addressed the issue, but I don't recall any real specifics.

Windows 10. I think some of you folks have been using it or testing it already. This morning, I get notification that I can reserve a free fully-featured upgrade to Windows 10 on my Windows 8.1 PC. My PC also passes the check to see if it's compatible with Windows 10.

Never really been an early adopter. Hung on to Windows 98 SE until 2006, then Windows XP until 2012, when I jumped past Vista and Windows 7 to Windows 8 (then 8.1). I agree with those who wait until the bugs get shaken out, say at least a year after release. I haven't minded Windows 8.1, but then I'm pretty much a casual PC user, not needing it for work or anything remotely approaching complicated. I use the normal/old desktop, have gotten used to the few changes that affect me, and haven't had any OS problems.

Regardless of what I've just said about the wait-and-see approach, why shouldn't I upgrade? Does Windows 10 have problems, major or minor? How do YOU feel about it?

Thanks for any and all advice!

I have been using it as a daily driver since January. Do it. It is fantastic.

Hey it's got to be better than Windows ME when it started, right?

Vee

No reason not to sign up for the free upgrade. That'll only download it for you, it is still your choice when and whether to change over.

You should certainly reserve your free upgrade copy, whether you choose to actually upgrade when it first becomes available or not.  Having said that, my main reservation on upgrading immediately to the home edition is that there doesn't seem to be an obvious way to disable automatic updates.  I'd consider waiting at least until the first bunch of release patches come out before considering upgrading on a critical use computer.  Usability-wise, I'd have no reservations of upgrading from Windows 8.1 to 10.  Seems to be no downside to me.

I have an older Win 7 laptop that I have reserved a Win 10 upgrade on.  My main Win 7 system will not be upgrading to 10 for some time.

I plan on thoroughly testing 10 and seeing how it runs things like CoH and other games and programs as well as over all stability, etc.

AS I recall the offer to upgrade is for a year so no rush.  Let 10 come out then wait for the major updates and security fixes to release.

Show me a bug free Microsoft operating system at launch and I'll show you one that doesn't exist ;)

With Strong Hearts Full, we shall UNITE!
When all seems lost in the effort to bring CoH back to life,
Look to Cyberspace, where HOPE burns bright!

I'm on my third build of Windows 10 and there are a few glitches in the web browsers, but it's stable, fast, and light. It actually feels just as fast as 8.1 and I'm sure it's going to fly when it's done. Before anyone panics or starts slamming either IE or the new Edge browser, I have installed Chrome and Firefox and they are both screwed up as well. The problems are being reported the second they're found, so it should be resolved pretty quickly.

Side note: As of an announcement the day before yesterday, there will be no way to turn off Windows Automatic Updates in 10. There's been a lot of whining about it, and at some point it seems pretty sure that either someone will put out a hack for it on Cnet or they will relent and patch in the option. As of now, it's a no.

I have been doing the Win 10 Tech Preview on both my desktops with mixed success. The past few updates have been whirlwind and I have had my share of problems with the process, but by and large I am very pleased with the product. I love the customizable start menu, it boots MUCH MUCH faster than any of the previous versions for me and has a much more flexible backward compatibility than I have noticed with previous versions. I was even able to breakout Crimson Skies and play it, which I haven't been able to do since the the Win XP crack.

Until this week anyway, I was able to put up with the crashes and restarts. Then a Java based boot sector virus got past both Windows Defender (Native Win 10 AV) and AVG (One running on each machine) and BOTH my machines went down and the backup drives were infected too.

I have to use a Linux live CD to boot and repair the boot sectors, and then ultimately to wipe the main drives for a fresh clean Win 10 ISO install (10162, already updated to 10240) I am slowly disinfecting and restoring my files, but re-installing all my programs, a real pain in the ass, but thankfully all was not lost.

I love Win 10. but I don't know if I would do the early technical preview thing again.
We're almost there!  ;D

The RNG hates me.

It appears that New Horizons, out past Pluto, has a faster communication rate than NCsoft.
Too bad NASA doesn't own CoH -- we'd probably have a much better chance of seeing "progress" were that the case...  :)

...um...you know they launched that probe nine years ago, right? It left Earth about three days after my son was born, and he's now going into fourth grade. I'm hoping we get slightly better results from NCSoft.

From everything I have read, this is their last PC operating system. It will be updated and they will offer features on the Store, but there won't be another version of Windows coming out. Well, maybe until we're all gaming in Holodecks with Quantum systems. Oh, man, people are going to be taking Dramamine so they can handle Super Jump in CoH 6!

In the same sense that OSX is the last Mac operating system.

That's the joke.
I used CIT before they even joined the Titan network! But then I left for a long ol' time, and came back. Now I edit the wiki.

I think most of us got it.  However the only thing that makes waiting worse, is seeing literally every single page with some kind of comment about how either A) The IP is losing value which in turn means no one will want to play it apparently in the next 6 months to 2 years.  Or B) Some comment about how NCSoft is jerking us around wasting our time until we lose patience.  Not that people aren't entitled to feel that way, but I certainly don't think it makes waiting any easier.  It's like being reminded you have to wait in line while you are waiting in line.

Vanquish

I haven't gone through all the 900+ pages, but how likely is it actually that we will get this game back? I know a lot of people have hope, and hope is nice, but how realistic is it?

I see from the latest update that the approach is "inspiration" and not a copy. Does that mean we can't get the game back the way it was?

Ummm... You know, the *purpose* of New Horizons was to gather data from Pluto, right ... which they just flew by a week ago ... right?

The data from that will take ~16 months to send back, right?

Now, check your calendar and realize that Nate, et al, have been "negotiating" with NCsoft for ... wait for it ...  16 months already  (Mar, 2014), and then perhaps you'll get the point I was making...     ;D

PS> That said, I'm not taking any bets on NCsoft beating 9 years either, but that's a different conversation.

I'll take that bet! 1,000 influence on results in less than 9 years.

It's been accelerating actually, used to only have that conversation loop every 10 pages or so. If it continues accelerating at more or less the same rate eventually the thread will just be bots pasting those posts back and forth until they crash the server.

Are you sure the thread isn't already bots posting back and forth?  :o
