Mods and Gear
« on: October 03, 2013, 01:35:21 AM »
Ok, so me and my girlfriend are trying to get more into CO and we're looking for advice about gear and Vehicle mods in game.

I'm wondering what are the two best or most used Defensive and Support mods used for vehicles, or what you guys swear by.

I tend to go with: Reconstructive Biosteel and Nanite Booster in Defensive and Enemy Hull Scanner and Flight Computer in Support right now, but I feel like there's some room to improve but I'm just not sure what.

We're also wondering what's the best way to go about gear. So far I run with the get sets from the Q store for their set bonuses, but it looks like we might could get more out of gear we gather and put mods in, but which is the best, which is the most likely to actually get ahold of, and how would you go about modding it (use the mod slots for stats that aren't super, always make sure each piece of gear helps you primary then mod for secondary, always make room for End or Rec?) Thanks in advance.
Please don't send blind requests in games to me, I learned to ignore them in CoX, no offense meant. (this is only here until I can figure out how to put it in my actual profile on here.)

I'm not gonna be any help. Not tried vehicles and my gear is Silver Champ/Auction Exchange stuff.

The 'standard' gear setup I tend to go with is as follows:

Primary offense: Heroic gloves of precision with either a gambler gem for damage builds or a sentinel's brooch for support builds, plus mods for primary and one secondary super stat.
Primary defense: Heroic breastplate of agility with gambler gem and mods for primary and the other secondary super stat.
Primary utility: Heroic or Legion's helmet of speed. Mods depend on the build here, if I have energy issues I'll use gambler gems for cost reduction. If not, impact prisms for faster cooldowns. Plus mods for one secondary super stat and recovery, because I find having some recovery is useful for any build even if it's not a super stat.

Secondary offense: Vigilante's critical belt, or similar secondary item off the auction house if I don't have the Q for the vigilante one.
Secondary defense: Secondary stat/+hp item, or pure secondary stat item. In both cases, for the secondary that's only on one of the primary items.
Secondary utility: Secondary stat/+cooldown or +cost reduction, same reasons as for primary utility. Again, the secondary stat that's only on one primary.

Comes out to a little over 300 primary stat and a little over 150 secondaries, with rank 5 mods. Which is good enough for me, almost definitely not the absolute best setup you could get but perfectly servicable and without having to spend on lockbox gear or anything in the zen store.

Do note though some of that is probably going to change in the next patch with the changes to how dodge rating from gear works, I'll probably swap the primary defense out for a heroic breastplate of defense or health, with an impact prism in it. Plus there's a new tier of gear coming out which I might try to get if it's not in lockboxes.

Vehicles are a bit harder, I haven't messed with them that much so I can't really say.

Be aware they are adding new top quality gear that far exceeds heroic and legionary, which, with 2 peices gives a 25 stat bonus to all stats and an offense bonus.  However Dodge rating is becoming neigh useless so far with the changes on PTS, with even having 250 dodge rating only granting about 7% dodge compared to the 50% dodge it used to.  So far only a few are really defending the change, mostly nerf nazi's who hate build diversity that seem to be convinced nerfing dodge rating to uselessness would somehow create diversity in there double-standard mentality....

However the "justice gear" so far, the mods installed give far, far more then in other peices, we'll have to see.
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

This was confirmed as a bug by one of the devs in the PTS patch thread on the CO forums.

I been wondering this but couldn't find a perfect spot to ask here. But, why are they nerfing Dodge again? From 50% down to 7% is a bit severe isn't it?

TT said on live that they wanted us to "build around" having some dodge and not be the main focus, but I think it's crazy and I hate everything TT says so far since I met them, so this seems as severe to me as it does to you. This will effect my Cyber Ninja a lot. The only possible good I could see coming would be if this effects Devonian Hawk as well as us, my biggest fear would be if they did what they did with Leadership in CoX. Where they changed our Vengeance from use on your defeat to use on a defeated ally, but left the Nemesis Lts the ability to use it when they died, that made them challenging yes, but I always thought it wasn't fair.

See now this is exactly what I meant by killing the anniversary party mood! I was in total party mode, Party Balls flying, all that good stuff. Now I'm like, hey, is my best guy about to go *poof*?

Gambler mods will no longer be useful with the upcoming patch.  As it stands on the PTS a single gambler gem rank 5 will only give you about 7% dodge now, rather than the 20% it gave before.  It's simply not enough anymore to be worthwhile.  Legion defense gear likewise with two gambler rank 5 gems will only get you from 10% dodge to about 24% dodge, still not really remarkable anymore.  It is a total buzz kill for everyone.

Edit: I forgot I'd posted here, doh, even though given they'd buffed dodge up since the first PTS it's still to weak to me.

Or they nerfed the player version of MoG but left the enemy with the good version.

well hell looks like dodge is not even worth having a bit of. Dodge and defense usually don't come on the same gear thus you much normally choose one anyways, except a few pieces towards the end.
What is one going to do with 7% dodge? Better off using impact prism and adding defense.

Well I guess I'll ditch Bountiful Chi for something more useful with my Unleashed.

Oh wait. No. I can't  : p

With the Unleashed you'll be fine, as you get Way of the Warrior which is being changed to give a sizable flat buff to dodge chance. The ones really hurt by the changes are those who were using dodge/avoid gear alone.

But to be honest, the way it works currently on live is unbalanced. There's no reason to use anything else in the primary defense slot, ever. Because why would you want 2-4% more resistance when you could have 30-40% dodge? So they're nerfing dodge gear to bring it more in line with other gear, which in the long term I think is probably a good move. You're still not going to need a healer following you around to survive normal content. You'll just be a little more reliant on killing them before they kill you, because they'll actually be able to kill you now - like they should be, if you're using an offensive passive.

Edit: Just checked, and I'm wrong. Unleashed gets Unstoppable, not WotW. So yeah, you might have a problem there if you were really depending on that heal on dodge advantage. But the Unleashed has a few more tricks than that so you're probably fine. Between Unstoppable's damage absorption, Force Shield's advantage for the resistance buff and the absorb shield on Eye of the Storm you're still pretty good especially compared to most archetypes. Plus it gets Warden and Vindicator specialisations and thus has the Best Defense/Aggressive Stance loop to buff offense and defense to stupid high levels which is good because those are supposedly buffed in the same patch that'll nerf dodge.

Well and my avoidance is high thanks to the Dex tree and avoidance gear. I kinda built around dodge.

*shrug* I guess as long as I don't get gimped I don't care where the (defense related) numbers come from  : )
