Has any other closed MMO had this much following and fan support?

Before COH I never played any MMO and this is my first experience with something being closed off after playing for 8 years.

With the work Codewalker is doing with Icon, its almost like being there again.

But has any other MMO that was closed down had this much fan support and 'hacking' the files so you can actually log back into the world even in a limited capacity.

It really makes me feel good that so many people loved this game as much as I did.

Now here on the East Coast, with the nice summer weather - all I can think about is the past 8 summers I spent logged into Paragon City and not being able to do missions, chat with people and generally just bum around in the zones, makes me sad.

Though Icon helps get over the loss by at least being able to see the zones again and actually move around.

I can't think of any, but to be fair, I'm sure that every MMO has its core group of people who will still be talking about it after its shut down.  I long for the day when those fans don't have to worry about this problem any more.

Well, Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies both still have active fan communities and private servers running; but no, neither of those has such an active push to restore or reincarnate them. Part of that might be the ways in which they went down. UO was a very mature game with a very antiquated playstyle and design which made it quite easy to hack and privitize... and Galaxies had been more or less gutted by Lucas Arts before its official shutdown, radically changing the game balance and pissing off a lot of fans. (they transformed it from a wide ranging MMO in the style of CoH and CO into "everybody is a jedi!") So each game was honestly at a point where its community was ready for and expecting its shutdown. CoX on the other hand, was shuttered while it was both active and profitable, which threw everyone involved for a loop and left a lot of emotional holes.

The Fifth Horseman

We were heroes. We were villains. At the end of the world we all fought as one. It's what we did that defines us.
The end occurred pretty much as we predicted: all servers redlining until midnight... and then no servers to go around.

Somewhere beyond time and space, if you look hard you might find a flash of silver trailing crimson: a lone lost Spartan on his way home.

... I thought Ultima Online is still active?  ???

It is, it's just most people thought it died a long time ago.  :P

Well the sequels (yes there were two) died in development but it's still alive and kicking and with a subscription fee.

Earth and Beyond, maybe?

They have a working emulator plus community, game is closed, plus a fully recreated fan-made version of the official website when it was live.

That and SWGEmu, I believe.
