Why the Lack of CoH Media Coverage??
« on: May 06, 2013, 03:55:00 AM »
Why has there been such a lack of media coverage over the loss of CoH?  I would think the alpha game of its genre would at least get a bit more attention.  I've yet to read an article in either Game Informer nor Computer Gamer magazines about the fall of CoH.  Granted, in the near 8 years of CoH's existence, Computer Gamer only put out approx. six mentions/articles, but that is squat compared to the coverage of other games/genres.  I'm at a loss of why the magazines haven't done an in depth article  of the CoH situation and the behind-the-scenes struggle to see it revived.

The lack of CoH coverage has bugged me for years.  Nearly all CoH game updates (Issues) went without mention in the magazines, when other games were given press over the most minor changes.  I, at least, thought a unique game of its type would warrant some coverage that it was being shuttered.

Oh well.

Apparently you have been living under a rock because there has been a metric pancake-ton of media about the closure, all the way from the announcement/firing of Paragon up through a piece posted just a couple days ago about the community pulling around TPP/HaV.

Game Informer had some online 'editorial' articles, almost none of those get into the actual magazine, no matter what the content is.

well there have been media coverage towards the people and crowd taht probably already knew about COX and or the closing, aka, game magazines.

General news coverage, none, of course.

But in those game magazines of the online sort, there have been a bunch, but it's easy to miss if one is just a casual gamer that never read those sites, or not THAT deep into gaming and gaming news and thus really dotn have to live under a rock to miss it. It wasnt exactly mainstream.

A more interesting question is, how might a "interest" piece in one of the more mainstream news outlets be enticed? We don't want "headline" news, as that usually comes from bad stuff happening, and...well, the kind of bad stuff would generate BAD PR for us. But as an "interest" piece...

Not got a solid idea here, sorry. Just musing out loud to see if anybody else might have something.

Print magazines, with their limited space for articles between the ads, need articles that a reader would be interested in reading so he would buy a copy.  So it's geared to pieces on new games or hardware and very little space about industry news, opinion pieces or retrospectives about older games that aren't around anymore (if they do it's in relation to a remake that's coming soon).

While an online game zine can ignore all the reasons to restrict content.  They can wrap every press release in the cloth of news, present opinions from all of their contributors, discuss the state of the industry.  And as long as they don't seriously tick off anyone who would advertise on their site, there are few restrictions as to what they are willing to discuss.  It doesn't matter to them what draws eyeballs to their site, page views are page views.
