So.....what to play now??
« on: January 03, 2013, 09:18:03 PM »
I'm at work and I was just researching some MMO's seeing how COH was my first MMO I ever played I now believe along with the advice of my nephew that we both have been spoiled by the graphics and game world of COH. NOTHING compares to it.......this is really beginning to get on my (excuse my french) DAMN nerves!!!! I honestly was bored of COH being as it needed balancing for PVP in my opinion of course however I find myself bored when i have spare time. I don't want a costume creator (good job at building it) I want the game back!! I have played GW2 got bored after a week, DCUO is ok but it's not like COH and I miss my buds from the game!! Champions is just crap on a stick IMO so boring and looks terrible even with my graphics turnt up and yes i meant TURNT!  Also the "updates" we receive don't really tell me anything not to mention the activity on this forum is dwindling. I honestly think people are giving up and I don't blame them cause I honestly have but dammit why can't they just bring the game back???? Oh well just thought i'd get that off my chest cause no one else understands. I guess the Mayans prediction was correct the world did come to an end just not the world we all thought it would be!!! Welp back to work......

I've been going over the same evaluation myself.

I have not seen a game pass the CoH test otherwise I would be playing it. While I did play Eve Online for 3 years I did reach a point where I stopped playing it. That was probably the 2nd best game I played. Other games such as GW, DDO, AC, EQ, SWTOR etc just don't pass the CoH test, nor the EvE-O test.

The only other game my friends and I found that we find to be a nice balance of solo and teaming is...Diablo 2. Yep that old ancient game. It has many benefits, one of them is we don't have to spend any money on it, and we don't get bombarded by the new Free to Play (Ugh!) model.

(Commentary: F2P while it did well at first when there were a couple of games that did that, much like Casinos, it gets much more spread out when there are many F2P games. Also, the focus on such games should be for the 20-40% who are paying subs since there are many who will never ever pay a dime and much of the games resources are being spent catering to the player who won't be spending anyways. aka chasing after the mythical subscriber that doesn't exist. Right now its the trend, so I'll either stick to paid games only or be one of "those" players who never spend a dime. YMMV and you are free to choose which model you prefer)

At this point, I'm looking at EvE Online again, its still a sub based game although they did add a cash shop for clothes. Good thing that is purely cosmetic.

I've been giving CO a try. After fiddling around for a couple of weeks I decided the Silver approach just wasn't cutting it so I forked over the $15 expecting to find more content and game depth... and it just isn't there. I'm stunned that anyone would have ever considered this game a competitor to CoH. It has a mere fraction of the content and the underlying game, despite supposedly being based Champions (IMO by far the best pen-and-paper Heroic RPG), is remarkably shallow with combat being a laughably repetitive and mind-numbing button mashing contest. And then there are those graphics. On top of all that the chat system is much worse than CoH, teaming options seem limited (maybe I've missed something, but I've had one team in 3 weeks that wasn't for an Alert), the in game help is often inaccurate (Roles, for example) and last but not least, the community info online such as guides typically dates from 2009 and no longer reflects the current state of the game.

I was hoping for a poor man's CoH, no more, and it isn't even that.

Umm... no thanks if I want to play something like that I will pull out the N64 and play 007 with some friends. As I mentioned earlier COH graphics and gameplay has spoiled me. No other game out there moves and plays the way this game did. DCUO comes close but I'd rather play it on my PS3 instead of my computer :( SMH.....

Try some APB, open city like CoH, Cars = Travel powers and community is just as bad as ours was.

The TF2 comp community is probably the most similar I've seen to the CoH PvP community. From a teamwork standpoint there's nothing like it. It's basically CoH PvP, but minus the part where CoH was the easiest game in the world. eeeeeeee.

So it's... pretty much CoH minus all the stuff I liked about CoH?  I never PvP'd, and I liked the game because it was easy and relaxing rather than frustratingly difficult. Getting killed by other players and then mocked for it is not what I played CoH for.

I'm getting used to Champions and starting to like it. I loathe pvp. I saw you post elsewhere that you have trouble connecting to it, though. =( I had trouble a few weeks ago, but have not had trouble since.

Have you tried LotRO? That is a beautiful setting without twitchy gameplay. There is a lot of content. I hear the end game is grindy, but it's so far off and there is so much parallel content, I never noticed. I just kept rolling alts and doing different low level stuff. There are quite a few "bring me 12 boar butts and 20 elf knickers quests", but the fact that I am doing it in middle earth makes it better. I could see you wanting to stay away from the fantasy genre for obvious reasons, though. Wish I had more suggestions, I haven't played many games. =(

Team Fortress 2 is a team-oriented class-based first person shooter. It's a blast and I'd highly recommend it to anyone, but it's in no way similar to CoH.

GW2 for WvWvW
EQ2 for housing/decorating, lots of content, and more traditional MMO play
DCUO for costumes, genre, and atmosphere

Plus, the latter two have FTP options that aren't horrible.

No one game is working for me at this point. I might try TSW now, but I don't expect it to be 'the one' to be honest.

To me, it was tediously grindy even early on.  Unless they've *immensely* sped it up since last I played, I'd still find it so.  Which is too bad, as I'd be happy exploring the entire land if I didn't have to worry about powerful baddies smiting me around every wild corner.
When you insult someone by calling them a "pig" or a "dog" you aren't maligning pigs and dogs everywhere.  The same is true of any term used as an insult.

I've never found that to be the case, and I've gotten characters up to about 40 or so. I have a few around 50, but those were duoed with my husband. Goes to show how different everyone's perception is. I will admit that mine has been skewed by the ability to geek out in middle earth. Still, the game feels casual friendly to me.

CoH was the easiest game in the world?   Really?  How come lots of hot shots came in thinking they'd pwn the world, and then couldn't even hold their own?  How come folks that could run 1 team Rikti Mothership Raids were very rare?

I guess I am just pointing out, that the appeal of CoH is that i's stupidly complex..  Seems easy.  Easy to get into..  Then you start to get into the details...

Then if you get into the details, it really gets silly

I agree with 99% of your comments..  But, I disagree one one point..  I am a subscriber..  I will not play a game taht doesn't have a subscription options...  And, I'd vastly prefer a game that had ONLY subscription options..  FTP to me means, F to have a model without being beholden to anyone...  I will continue to avoid FT as best I can.

I think the appeal wasn't that CoH was stupid simple or stupid complicated.  I think the appeal was that the game could be as easy or as complicated as you wanted it to be.  You could team someone who knew all the gory details of the game's mechanics down to the exact effect of client/server communication time on your attack chains with someone who was just fascinated with the costume creator, and they would still both enjoy the experience.

I often enjoyed just logging in and beating on things to unwind after coming home from work.  I also spent time out of game constantly tinkering with builds in Mids.  And I once led a successful ship raid (bombs, U'Kon, a decent amount of time in the bowl and all) with only two partially filled PUG teams that was great fun for all involved because I was handling the gory details and shouting out instructions while everyone else followed along and blasted Rikti (long, long before we could all communicate via league chat).

The number of times I heard people being rejected from teams in CoH was far, far fewer than I've seen it happen in other MMOs I've played.  "Oh, you didn't take specific power sets, slot that character out with purple IOs, and grab only specific incarnate powers?  Sorry, we don't want you."  I keep looking for that in other games but I haven't found it anywhere else.

In DDO, raid groups are rarely interested in taking a trap monkey rogue along when they could fill that slot with a DPS character and let someone with just a splash of rogue handle the traps they encounter.

I constantly see teams forming for flashpoints in SWTOR broadcasting very, very specific requirements for a character to fill a spot.

(Maybe CO is better, but I haven't teamed in that game yet and I only actively monitor the CoX channel.)

Mechwarrior Online isn't too bad, but I've still been called a n00b for cautiously approaching an Atlas from behind with my Jenner, firing a couple of test shots to make sure it was actually a player who had lost connection rather than just someone babysitting the base capture point, and then proceeding into the base (which announces your presence to the entire enemy team.)  It only takes stepping into a base and having an Atlas or Awesome that looked like it was AFK turn around to alpha strike your core once to make you a little cautious.

So it's... pretty much CoH minus all the stuff I liked about CoH?  I never PvP'd, and I liked the game because it was easy and relaxing rather than frustratingly difficult. Getting killed by other players and then mocked for it is not what I played CoH for.

Getting killed by other players and being mocked for it are two entirely different things - two things that don't necessarily go together, and certainly shouldn't.

My comparison of TF2 to CoH had nothing to do with the gameplay. Mazz vs The World said something about CoH having a unique PvP community; my comparison was strictly concerning parallels between the Comp TF2 community and the comparatively tiny Comp CoH PvP community.

I don't consider TF2 to be any sort of replacement for CoH - the two are very different games. That said, like FlyingCarcass, I recommend TF2 to anyone.

I guess I am just pointing out, that the appeal of CoH is that i's stupidly complex.

As eabrace said, it was as complex as you wanted it to be. When I said it was easy, I was specifically talking about PvP, but the same could certainly be said for the game's PvE. Sure, you could get into all kinds of number science if you wanted to, but it really wasn't necessary - soloing TFs and AVs was easy enough if you had a decent understanding of the game. Similarly, on the PvP side, the top PvP teams seldom had players with extensive number knowledge.

I really don't understand the hype around TF2 it looks just like the very old 007 game from N64? Whats so great about it? Details would be nice cause from the videos on youtube I'm not impressed thus far and can't even bring myself to download it.

Which videos have you watched?

Yeah, the game is old, but on high graphics it looks really smooth and unique in my opinion (I personally dig the cartoony art style).

It's pretty hard for me to sum up what's great about TF2, so I guess:

For one, it's a really unique take on the FPS genre. It's also a game you can play however you want. If casual play is your thing, you can enjoy endless hours of action on hundreds of developer and community made maps. If you're into competitive, TF2 has a pretty sweet comp dynamic: it's heavily teamwork and strategy based, but it also involves a lot of reflex/aim.

I used to play arcade style racing games back in my early teen years (SSX anyone?), so I also enjoy doing the hundreds of community made jump maps - some are easy for beginners, some are borderline impossible. There's basketball, pyro dogeball, randomizers, and a plethora of other community made game modes to enjoy. Here's some vids.

Trick jumps and stuff: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sa6dxTDo8D0
A jump map: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w1FpCbBtwOc
Here's some basketball: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lmoenfHHboo
Here's a competitive frag vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENruOrM01CQ

There are a lot of other great tf2 vids out there too, maybe it's just not your cup of tea, but personally I love the game. I actually find the competitive play can be fun to watch too - much more so than CoH arena matches at least (granted, CoH had a really crappy spectator system, but the overall dynamic of TF2 is something I find more exciting).
