CoH film rights / just a thought

Hey everybody, some thought occurred to me today..

I recall a fair while ago, Tom deSanto acquired the rights to make a film based on CoH along with a TV-Series. At the time when I read it I thought "neat", but also reckoned it would never see the light of day and stay in production hell forever (if they would ever start). Now, this is a longshot as I figure that if they were serious about making the film, it would've happened by now, but he might have some interest in keeping CoH alive. After all, if the game is axed, the acquired rights aren't as valuable as they could be.

Like I said, it's a longshot, but in this phase we can't really afford to be overly picky I reckon.

This doesn't change the idea or thought process of this thread. I just wanted to point out he had an option. Options have a shelf life. If you don't start production before that shelf life expires the "rights" to the property revert back. Options can be extended, but only if ,in this case, NCsoft so chooses to sell such an extension. Most options are one or two 18 month periods, but this is not always the case. This is an area that I have experience. I have been paid for options and have optioned the rights of properties.

So my point is that it is unlikely you'll see a CoHs movie/tv show. Not saying it's not possible. Halo has gone through a half dozen options and has never made the big screen. In fact, every game with a large fan base has it's rights optioned at some point.

But if you can get Tom DeSanto to get us some positive press....it is a good idea.

Something that Olantern posted about contracts makes me think that anyone we can name withoutwho has a contract with Marvel is either going to stay out of this or just not be interested. Disney owns Marvel, has very deep pockets, and is historically rabid about protecting its IP. Given the suit by Marvel at the beginning of CoH, it's highly unlikely anyone at Marvel will be sympathetic. I'm sure, in the unlikely event someone can get any of them to comment on record, they will say what a shame it is that event transpired as they did. They may even wish us and, especially, the devs the best.

Except for Stan Lee. I get the feeling he works a great deal of latitude into his contracts.
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."
