Hey guys.

You've already seen some of them.  Articles essentially belittling the community for not just letting CoH go.  Calling us immature, etc, etc.  Telling us to "suck it up an drive on" and the like.

I understand how this can get your blood boiling.  It's irritating as hell for me too, and I find myself reliving flashbacks of the violent old days of the Usenet wars.

Do yourself a favor.  Fight the urge to strangle these guys with their own entrails.  Yes, it'd probably make you feel better.  But you'll feel even better if we're able to rescue the game.

As you find, or are notified about such articles, record them.  If you want, respond.  But just do it in a civil fashion.

Calling these guys out, calling them names, flaming them, etc accomplishes two things:

  • It proves them "right" about members of the community being immature
  • It provides them fodder to generate more page views.

One of the articles I read got enough responses that the site's author immediately followed up with another troll-screed, hoping for more.

We have many, MANY better things to do with our time than feed such trolls.

  • Save the game!
  • Stay active in evangelizing our cause and the game.
  • Play the game.
  • Have a life.
  • Study up on the joys of self-trepanation.

Again, it's all right to be irritated with such callous behavior.  You wouldn't be human otherwise.

Just try to focus on the positive aspects of what we're trying to accomplish and let all this useless chaff fall where it may.  If we do this right, we'll be laughing at them on December 1st.  A far more satisfactory social interaction from our POV!

Well said, Hyperstrike!

My signature on the COH forums gives this advice:

"When encountering a troll, ask yourself one question: who is smarter? The fisherman or the fish that avoids the bait?"

Let's not take the bait.

On one blog post I thanked the author for allowing us to live rent-free in his head. ;) (I got the line from when Wil Wheaton said it to Sheldon in a BBT episode).  ;)

On the other hand, every angry troll blogger who posts that sort of thing is bringing more attention to us, thereby giving more publicity to the cause.

I for one think that the standard response should be, "Thanks for taking the time to give us some press!" or "Thank you for taking a few minutes out of your day to think about what we're doing!" and then a link to this forum. But then, I'm kinda evil.  ;D

Eh.  I'm all for thanking them for the extra press, but I don't know if I want to invite them to the forums...

This sort of amuses me, as I can imagine them being really irritated not to get a rise out of us, and the concept that I haven't bothered to read their blog properly. I'm going to try this in future. Thanks, Dasha!

I have an effective way to mannage anger.

Picture yourself near a stream.

Birds are chirping softly in the crisp, cool mountain air.

Nothing can bother you here.

No one knows this secret place.

You are in total seclusion from that place called "the world."

The soothing sound of a gentle waterfall fills the air with a cascade of serenity.

The water is clear.

You can easily make out the face of the person whose head you're holding under the water. See? You're already smiling.

I cannot emphasize this enough.  If you reply to one of these blogs, be nice, be calm, and stay positive.  Remember, whoever wrote the piece of screed you're replying to, they've already made up their mind.  Arguing with them is pointless.  The person you should be responding to isn't the author of it.  The person you should be responding to is your reader.

Think of it like a dramatic broadcast fight in a zone.  Someone is yelling and screaming at you, calling you out, cussing you out, and generally being an ass.  You write a /petition on the person and the GM is looking over the chat logs.  If you're sitting there dishing it back at them, the GM is going to think that it was just a mutual fight and, if any action is taken, will probably ban both of you.  If, on the other hand, you're nothing but nice and kind to the person and they're yelling at you, the GM will see it as someone attacking you without cause and you not responding in kind.  They'll be banned, you'll be in the clear.  In this case, other people are the GMs and they're judging the writer and our community.  If the writer is a tool and we're nothing but nice, they're going to make up their mind pretty quickly what the situation is.

If only we could draw more from the Tao of Fi, but that would only make things worse. :)
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

Just remember, the only Troll one is legally allowed to beat up is hiding under the streets of SC! Just remember to wait until they start glowing if you want the badge!  ;-)

Digging your twist on that. Got your own collection of shallow graves up in those mountains already, have you?

One reason I bought a home out here in the boondocks is that I stress easily. It is nice, except for the internet service.

:) similar to a post i put on the forums asking for people to stay as calm as possible and don't let them get to you.
We don't want to start acting like mindless kids :) (you know what i mean :p)
So i agree with this and hope people remember it.

When people say to let go, it always reminds me of this song:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rMHRq7yGdkA

Quote from: Madonna
This used to be my playground
This used to be my childhood dream
This used to be the place I ran to
Whenever I was in need
Of a friend
Why did it have to end
And why do they always say

"Don't look back
Keep your head held high
Don't ask them why, because life is short
And before you know, you're feeling old
And your heart is breaking
Don't hold on to the past"
Well, that's too much to ask

As far as I am concerned, anyone who is telling us we're childish or whatever should just be ignored.
Most of them won't get it, and the rest likely won't care.
In either case, I tend not to feel anger for such people, but pity.
