loading the forums

at different periods of time ive noticed the forums seem to load like i was on dialup, then for another period of time theyd load like normal. now, again it seems like im on dialup only when i try to load the forums main page. ive meant to mention this for a while but i spaced it off.

is this just me? the rest of the interwebs load just fine, cept here. if its just me i guess i should take steps to figure out why, if it isnt then... ummm.... well... why does it load slow *sadface*

Hey Lkn,

I know sometimes (by design) the server is or was slow or down for maintenance (such as backups), before the recent moves and upgrades.

I am thinking, if it keeps happening, you'd want to post the following if you can:
• Confirm that, each time when it loads slow, other pages in different tabs of your browser still load quickly?
• You would need to let folks know when it is happening (time of day), and your location, so the bosses can work out if they were running things at that time that would've caused this.

I am in Australia, for me quite often a lot of US pages may load slow depending on how congested the various pipes to the US are.

No, they're sitting there cracking whips at some unnamed animator who's drawing renderings of these conversations so that they can have fresh saturday morning cartoons.

at taosins request ill let you guys know if its loading slow, and it did just now after not doing so in a long time.
loaded other pages in other tabs they went fine.
its about 130 central US time

logged in earlier, forums loaded normal. dont recall what time.

now, 630 loading slow again but not as bad as before.

We do have a daily backup that gives some slowdowns at (I think) about 5 AM EST each day (I could be off by an hour or two on that). So if you're primarily getting slowdowns in the early morning, it could just be that. It's been something we've wanted to fix for ages but haven't found a solution yet.

It's also possible the slowdown is somewhere in the pipes between our servers and your ISP. That makes it hard to diagnose. That could be the case even if you aren't seeing slowdowns on other sites. If this is the case, then it's pretty hard for us to directly address.

We're investigating some performance enhancements that might mitigate both of those issues some eventually, but no guarantees on that.

You reference the central US time zone -- do you live in the US in that time zone, or are you international?

This kind of issue is pretty hard to troubleshoot, especially if it's something only one or two people are encountering. :(

yup, im in the US. missouri specifically, if that matters.

i suppose i shouldve noted AM or PM cause i was aware of the daily backup. all the times i posted where in fact PM times.

my main concern in the OP was that it was going to be loading slowly for an extended period of time again and honestly it hasnt been that bad at all recently.
i suppose i should also mention that when it does load slowly its only the initial load of the forums. as i browse posts and the sub forums its fine.
