Micro-transactions incoming
« on: May 03, 2011, 03:56:58 PM »
I didn't see it widely discussed, but NCSoft partnered with a company called PlaySpan back in October. They do pre-paid game time services and things like that, but they also do in-game microtransations. City of Heroes is specifically mentioned in the press release, though at the time only in the context of selling CoH boxes and subscriptions through it. Haven't heard anything else on it since then. Until today.

The first inklings of in-game microtransactions appeared this morning, in the bugfix patch that was applied.

Playspan_Random_Dual_Inspiration
Playspan_Revival_Power
Playspan_Mission_Teleporter_Power
Playspan_Experienced_Power
Playspan_Respec
Playspan_Tailor_Token
Playspan_Super_Pack_Basic
Playspan_LT_MeleeWeaponChoice
Playspan_LT_RangedWeaponChoice
Playspan_LT_AttackPowerChoice
Playspan_{Every Single Freaking Pool A-E Recipe}
Playspan_{New recipes sets like Blaster's Wrath and Will of the Controller that don't even exist yet}
Playspan_LT_VanityPetsChoice
Playspan_LT_PreOrderSprints
Playspan_LT_EmergencyBaseTeleporter
Playspan_LT_WallMountainWeaponDisplays
Playspan_LT_Respec{1-6}
Playspan_Random_Team_Inspiration
Playspan_Converter

It makes me sad, and a little worried about the future of the game.

If the micro-transaction thing takes off, we could be looking at an earlier transition to a Free-to-Play business model.  (You have to have a micro-transaction system that works in order for F2P to work well.)  Guess we'll see where they're going with this.

I wouldn't worry too much.  Most of that stuff, you can get for free now if you're willing to wait for the Veteran rewards and such.  Plus, I wouldn't chalk it up as a sure thing just yet, either.  Remember how they made a deal with some kind of VOIP company a few years ago with the intention of integrating voice chat into the game?  If I recall correctly, they even made an announcement about it and everything, and later decided to scrap the plans for it.

Even if it does go microtransaction-based, it will depend to me on exactly what they plan on selling.  If it's cheap enough and doesn't affect gameplay, I wouldn't be averse to the idea.  If they go free-to-play and you have to microtransact to make significant character development, yeah, that would kind of turn me off.

I've got to admit, I'm intrigued by what "Random_Team_Inspiration" could be.

No joke, unless someone went through the trouble of inserting the whole list of over 900 recipes just to mess with us (including purples, I missed them at first glance). It could happen.

Also, I missed some, since I was only looking at diffs since the last build. Some were apparently already in there.

Playspan_Shielded_Dual_Inspiration
Playspan_Unslotter
Playspan_Booster

Now, keep in mind that this is very preliminary. These exist only in the recipe index table -- the actual recipes are not defined or implemented yet. So it's possible that it's something that they're experimenting with and may not actually be implemented. It's happened before, such as with the recipes for buying account-wide vouchers for the anniversary and passport badges with astral merits (those recipes were finally removed in the build before this one).

The artwork for the dual inspirations has been in there for quite a while, but there still aren't any powers that use them.

The vet reward stuff doesn't bother me too much. Tailor token just seems pointless. Buying recipes, including very rares, for real-world cash? That sets off an alarm bell or two. I'm reserving judgment for now, though.

Honestly, free-to-play scares me a little because of its effect on the community. That's my primary fear when I see things like this creep in.

Just a random theory, maybe something based off of the holiday inspirations that were supposed to be team buffs, even though they never quite worked right.

I wasn't able to find any reference to these in the item enumeration or recipe definitions. Which file are you looking at?

They're in bin/InvRecipe.bin, which AFAICT maps recipe names to numeric IDs for the communication protocol. They were just added in build 2010.201105021815.1 and use id numbers 25306-26225, directly after the (spoiler) Arachnos Lore pet recipes (end spoiler).

You're correct that the actual recipes for them are not defined in recipes.bin yet, however the slots seem to be reserved to be implemented in the future.

bin/InvSalvage.bin (and InvStoredSalvage) also recently had S_FortuneToken, S_EnhancementBooster, S_EnhancementUnslotter, S_EnhancementCatalyst, and S_HVSuperPackSalvage added, right after the incarnate components. Those also look like reservations as they don't have entries in Salvage.bin yet.

EDIT: Worktable_Playspan was also added to InvBaseDetail.bin. It's a bit of a misnomer, as these days a 'worktable' is just used as a key to a particular menu within the massively overloaded crafting system first introduced for bases. No other bin files were changed with this patch.

I, for one, welcome our new microtransaction overlords.

CoH has been hitting the sweet juice of monthly subs plus microtransactions for too long to let go of that model until the time comes when monthly subscriptions get too low.

Although, the day will come, and this seems like it's getting ready for that.

In the meantime, it could be nothing more than using PlaySpan as an outlet for CoH sales, like Steam is. Hopefully, they can sell to IP blocked areas like Latin America.

Still no actual implementation in the recipes themselves, but I have reason to believe that this file is one of about half a dozen that are generated automatically as part of the build process, and that it reflects changes in the master database which is used for internal test builds as well.

Oh, I know, Belle has that one, which is kind of funny since she plays exactly one and only one character that has reached level 50.  I'm still :( about it.  Oh well, it falls into the "I don't agree with 100% of the things they do" bucket.

A bit off-topic, but does that do anything if you use it at level 50?

It can be used to pay off debt.  Aside from that, I'm thinking not much.

If this does happen and this is a one-off purchasable item, Belle is going to overload my credit card after one badge tour.

We won't know for sure until much later, but I'd guess that it's simply an early purchase of the vet team recall power, not a one-shot item.

If this does happen, this is the only thing in the list that makes me particularly :(

The vet rewards don't particularly bother me, though I could see how they would irritate a few people. Personally I'd rather see those tied to a system of prepurchasing game time. That might not be reasonable for everyone though.

The one that really bothers me is the recipes. IMO that's equivalent to Paragon becoming a gold seller.

And to be honest, I've been irritated for years about the costume codes, that they've been restricted to people on a geographical basis.  If this provides an alternate means for people who live thousands of miles away from those conventions and meet-and-greets to get them, all the better, I say.

The costume codes I actually do agree with being available through something like this, for many of the same reasons.

I'm curious; what in particular would make you sad and worried about the future of the game?  I'm not being facetious or trying to make you not sad or worried, just wondering what fears you have and how could Paragon Studios allay them?

Several factors. Paragon effectively getting into the RMT business leaves a bad taste in my mouth for one. There's not much that can be done about that, but with recipes (especially purples) being on the list it's effectively a pay-for-performance system. Things like costume and cosmetic options I may dislike being nickel-and-dimed for, but if it's good for the long-term health of the game I can't oppose it too much.

Also, if they're looking in to a possible switch to F2P and/or more microtransactions, it sends the message that the subscription fees are getting close to the point of not cutting it for paying the bills. That may or may not be true, but it's what a lot of people will take away from such a move. If that's the case, a badly-implemented business model shift could result in NCSoft pulling the plug for good, which is something I definitely do not want.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be a subscriber for the long haul. There are 4 accounts in my household that will undoubtedly remain active for as long as the servers are online and they still have a subscription plan that offers a significant benefit over and F2P plans, and a few more that get activated occasionally on an as-needed basis. That would continue to be the case even if no new content were developed.

Quote
On the other hand, I know where you're coming from.  If City of Heroes goes F2P/microtransaction, would we have a sudden influx of griefers and gold farmers?  Is Paragon Studios/NCsoft going to start nickel-and-diming us to death, charging five dollars here and ten dollars there for stuff that we're currently enjoying for "free" (*ahem*... for $15 per month)?  Will the player base split into a spectrum of haves and have-nots based on discretionary income, with rich newbies being able to shortcut the hard work and quickly attain what is now considered veteran status?  Even if the game is going strong, will this convey the wrong signal, causing the press and public to perceive this as a sign of it failing?

^^^ This ^^^

Quote
If this does come down the pipeline, those are the things I hope they address, and I'll be one of the first ones posting in official forum threads asking these questions, questions they're undoubtedly thinking about already if this is in the works.  Since it's still all hypothetical, and they've been known to put stuff in the PIGGs before that they either never followed through on or changed their mind about, though, I'm intrigued but not too worried.

Speaking of piggs, the last build changed all of these. They no longer include Playspan_ in the name, and seem to have been shortened and somewhat obfuscated, but still correspond to roughly the same entries. A few examples:

Playspan_Shielded_Dual_Inspiration -> Alt_coin2sdr
Playspan_Bonesnap_A -> Alt_coesbos1
Playspan_Random_Dual_Inspiration -> Alt_ltlbiran
Playspan_LT_MeleeWeaponChoice, Playspan_LT_RangedWeaponChoice, Playspan_LT_AttackPowerChoice -> Alt_ltlbbwan, Alt_ltlbgsax, Alt_ltlbsamu
(i.e. blackwand, ax, sands of mu)
Playspan_5Merits -> Alt_ltlbmrx5

And some new ones were added, so they're definitely working on it. This could perhaps reflect a shift from playspan's system to something different, like an internal one, or NCCoin.

That's quite a scoop you got there, Supa.  Have you ever considered a career in journalism?  ;)

I've thought about it ;)

Just trying to decide what to scoop next, I've got a lot to live up to after the magic booster and the praetorian NPCs however many months it was before they were announced... Wish I could find where the old forums ended up.

Revamped AP screenshots maybe? I21 recipe lists? Time Manipulation preview? Staff Fighting powerset preview...? Hmmm.... Decisions decisions.

Whatever it is I'll post on some private web space somewhere and just provide a link. After Diellan's implication that pushing too far might sour some relationships there, I don't want to get you guys in trouble. The wiki, Mids, and other work is too important for that :)

A few teasers... After Keyes Island and the Underground, expect a "Minds of Mayhem" incarnate trial, set somewhere in the First Ward. Quite possibly at the MoMPH. There's also something about the TPN Campus in P_Endgame that's been there a while, not sure exactly what they're planning to do with it (it does get updates to stay in sync with the actual zone).

I will say that after reading the announcements, I feel a little better about this. It's less of a free-to-play and more of an extended trial, with the option to buy your way in to a subscription either in parts or in whole. I do remain somewhat skeptical, but they at least seem to have a solid plan. We'll see how it plays out.

Oh, btw, the IOs (not recipes, they're already crafted) bought through the Paragon Marketplace will be bound to that character and untradeable. They duplicated all the enhancements and made 'Attuned' versions of them that will be sold.

Free to play is damn near perfect for me. When I've got the time and inclination to play a LOT, I can subscribe. When I don't have the time or inclination to play very much, I can still log in and chat on my global channels, which is one of the first purchases I will make with the new vet rewards system (paragon rewards, not paragon points market).

Oh, btw, the IOs (not recipes, they're already crafted) bought through the Paragon Marketplace will be bound to that character and untradeable. They duplicated all the enhancements and made 'Attuned' versions of them that will be sold.
I am, surprisingly, OK with that. I was expecting to be totally upset by the purchasable invention system pieces (HUGE bonuses to people who have too much money laying around, of which I am decidedly NOT one), but if they work the way you say they will, they are effectively one-use, "soulbound" items (ala WoW's colored-tier gear). I don't LIKE it, but I am OK with it. Someone would have to shell out a lot of money to trick out a single character, and then those pieces can't be stripped for use on their other characters. I'm OK with that.

The real-money item I'm looking forward most to is the unslot token (depending on its cost). I have several characters that only want to swap out 1-5 IOs for something else. If it's a low enough cost that I can purchase several of them with my 400/mo sub points (when I do sub), that'll be frikken sweet.

Well, it turns out I spoke too soon. :-X  That's what I get for posting before getting a chance to do a full analysis.

The "Attuned" enhancements are not tradeable with other players, but can apparently be moved to alts. There is a new "account bound" flag, which I'm assuming means you can mail it to your own global, but not others. They also scale to your level, quite possibly outside the range that the crafted IO is normally available. I don't yet know how that interacts with exemplaring, and if it enables you to keep the set bonuses at all levels. That seems a bit overpowered if it does, especially since you can re-use the enhancements.

There are some other powers system changes which might cause some controversy. The most noteworthy is the addition of a "procs-per-minute" mechanic to limit how often procs can fire. For example, the Achilles' Heel: Chance for Resistance Debuff is being restricted to not go off more than 3 times per minute. However: currently this new flag only is set on the Attuned (bought) version of the enhancement, not the crafted. I don't know if that's intended as a tradeoff, or if the work simply isn't complete.

Again I caution everyone that this is not official information, is not in any way supported or condoned by Paragon Studios, and should be considered as nothing more than insane Superadine-induced ramblings. Any similarities to actual games, real or imagined, are purely coincidental.

What are the chances that a Proc that has a 20% chance to go off once every 10 seconds will go off 3 times in one minute?

For single target powers, this won't be a significant change.

For AoE specialists, this will be a small hit for most procs and a huge hit for Reactive.

It'll hurt a lot of melee toons, especially those at the high end of the recharge chain. My main, a DM/SD Brute, has a ST chain of Gloom > Smite > Midnight Grasp > Smite. Fighting an AV, he's using Smite about twenty times per minute (slightly more). On average, the procs in it (there are three) will fire four times per minute. Gloom and Midnight Grasp are both used half as often, so something like 10 per minute, and their procs will fire twice on average, and have a decent chance of going more than 3.

If it's something like 5-10 times, then it would stop being an issue with single target powers, while still being punishing to AoE powers.
