I don't know how it works since I haven't tried it. Are you able to customize your pets though? I haven't played the beta :(

Unless there's some shocking revelation waiting on the test server that we don't know about, pet customization is not part of the changes in Issue 16.  The only power customization in the MM power sets is in the colors of the power effects (like the dark blasts in the Necromancy set.)
