Pluto TV...
« on: September 17, 2020, 10:06:03 PM »
A neighbor recently told me about Pluto TV and I'm gonna tell you.

https://pluto.tv/live-tv/

It's a CBS thing and it's legit (as far as I can tell from Wikipedia and other snooping and my experience so far!). You don't have to sign up for... anything. You don't even make an account. You just go to the website and start watching video. It's a similar experience as Netflix without accounts or credit cards.

Pluto has ads (not a horrible amount) just like old timey TV did and it has shows and movies from old timey TV. It kinda feels like watching.. old timey TV. I've been chasing a Star Trek movie I've not seen yet and there is Mystery Science Theater 3000 and My Favorite Martian and Johnny Carson... and The Adams Family and John Wayne and Humphry Bogart and Henry Fonda and Marlon Brando and Jerry Lewis... and The Last Dragon and ... CNet TV and other news channels and ... probably at least one thing that you haven't seen for a long time that you wouldn't mind seeing again. There is some newer stuff too.

Anyway... I've only been a Plutonian since a few days now and that's about all I have for you. They have On Demand stuff and then there's stuff that you have to watch as it comes on (the Pluto link above).

It's probably not going to rock your entertainment world, but, for free, and with no strings attached, and you're in there watching stuff in high quality HD video - I'd say it's downright noteworthy and worth a mention. Again, don't expect an avalanche of amazing material, but, I will say I haven't flipped on Netflix for a few days now.

In France, I used to only get channels 1000 and up, which means I couldn't get MST3K, but I could get the Weird Al Yankovic music channel, which was kinda nice.

Then they updated it, and now I get "Pluto TV Coming to web soon.. Stay Tuned!"  (There's an app, but Google store claims that it's not compatible with my year-old tablet.  When I asked them about it directly, they claimed they're not available in France, they've never been available in France.  When I pointed out that I *had* been watching them on the website just a few months earlier and I would like to go back to that stetup, please, they never responded again)

Last night was Steve McQueen.. Henry Fonda. Highlander, Airplane followed by Airplane II is on right now..

I mean for free and in nice quality HD..

Would have loved to have had Pluto when the best thing on TV was documentaries in German taken from manufacturing plants explaining the marvels of making things, like, how chocolate comes into being.. and there was Kommissar Rex and Wetten, Dass...? and then there was late night soft porn (hey, we didn't subscribe to it! those were the same channels that showed the boring documentaries during the day.) Actually, Wetten, Dass..? was pretty good but, yeah. Some Pluto woulda been welcome.

Maybe part of the problem you're having with them is due to they can't try to sell you much of anything overseas with their U.S. ads.

~~

This is kinda weird but they have video game channels, too. The weird part is seeing hours and hours of programming devoted to ... walkthroughs. No narration, no explanatory text, just someone playing a game and showing you how to get from point A to Z, by, going from point A to Z.. I just got done watching like 10 mins of a Star Wars (I dunno which one..) game video that was actually kinda cool to watch.

I dunno, there is music channel stuff too. A channel that nonstop plays Star Trek tng. I dunno what else. Cooking shows.. Elvira, Mistress of the Dark..

Just got this for the second time. I assumed it was a regional thing in your post. Its only happened twice (out of many accesses) that I remember and the last time must have been within the last week.

*shrug*

Maybe ping them again every once in awhile.

I'm not watching the gamer stuff so much anymore but they like doubled their gaming channels recently and it's good to see the gaming channels get some support. I still watch/use for background noise the old stuff on Pluto daily.

For what it is, it's a pretty darn cool service.

The gamer channels were a big thing for me for awhile with Pluto and now the nostalgic stuff is where I seem to be all the time.

They keep adding channels to this thing. The first new channels I remember are the 90's, 80's, and 70's channels and those were pretty decent additions. Now we have..... The Happy Days channel (is it me or do they never show Happy Days anywhere? That was my favorite show when I was little) appeared this morning in the channels list (they've only been showing Laverne and Shirley so far - which made me think of the Star Trek channel and how they almost always show TNG). The Love Boat Channel appeared... The Beverly Hillbillies channel... and the Mission Impossible channel.

Not too shlabby!

Hopefully they stay free and open. It's not a huge deal to make a new online account (although I didn't sign up for the NBC thing online that looks similar to Pluto due to they make me make an account and Pluto doesn't) but I like that I don't have to with Pluto.

~~~
Oh Snap! They have Mork and Mindy as part of the Happy Days channel.
