Y'know, CoH really did have some neat holiday events
« on: December 26, 2015, 05:15:01 AM »
Lately I've been playing EVE Online; enjoyable game, but their version of an in game holiday event is randomly spawning sites throughout space with a few mundane NPCs and some loot drops. Woopdie do.

Looking back, CoH had some really nifty events that the devs really put some effort into, from giant monster spawns and invasions to special missions with custom maps and new bosses (I'm still kicking myself that I never got around to playing the Halloween or movie blockbuster trials), to zone invasions by hordes of rikti and zombies, to trick or treating and present hunting, to creating an entire sub-zone in pocket D for skiing. Gotta' appreciate the effort the Paragon/Cryptic devs put into CoH, really made the game something special.

Paragon Studios really did well with the special events, and agreed, the Halloween ones were the best.  Zombie Apocalypse, ToT, Banners, Dr Kane's House of Horrors, Eochai and Jack.  Special bonuses like halloween costumes, costume pieces, auras, emotes, extra costume slot and a lot of badges to go with it.

The other events were great too.  All the extra missions (Casino Heist, Gladiator, Lady Winter Invasion, Lord Winter's World, Widow in Red etc), bonus IO sets (Overwhelming and Winter's Gift) and temp powers.

Favorite one shot event was the Praetorian Invasion. Monster lag but super fun!:

I've been playing Marvel with friends recently, but yeah... most of their 'holiday events' have dealt with drop rates instead of any actual events outside of stacking multiple 'regular' ones together and putting a sale on the cash market... At least Captain America is my favorite comic book hero which helps. :)

Secret World has done better in the past, but I have to admit I haven't tried it out due to the fact I team with folks when I'm on and tend to gravitate toward their interests, which is super heroes, and Marvel seems to 'suck less' than DC in their eyes.

My favorite back in the day was the Ski Slope challenges, just because I enjoyed playing them... and the present hunting for goodies from the Gamester (if you were nice, or fighting snowmen if you were 'naughty'). Halloween always goes without saying as that's the most popular in the Lyc household. ;)

At least now I can kind of do the Ski Slopes, though I haven't timed myself... I just like doing it because I can. :) I've been doing that in Icon (no.. not PC... haven't had the time or attention to be social) more than I have been flying in and Atlas like I used to do in the past.

Paragon is rarely far from my mind or heart in the holidays. We here all still share that bond, whether we visit it daily or not.

I hope whatever it is you do, yours is a great one!

If I'm completely honest, EQ2 has the upper hand on every other MMO I've played in both quantity and over all quality of holiday events. EQ2 has had a lot more resources and time than most other games to build up their events, though. CoH had the events I look back on the most fondly. Not just because they were fun, but because the community was the best to do them with. That's the really important part. The EQ2 community can really suck sometimes.
