Heya folks! I was looking at a way to make an illusion controller that competes with Rad and Time for the top dog title, and came across Darkness Affinity. Now after doing a little bit of research, it seems like the key part of Illusion is to have perma Phantom Army. While I wasn't able to do that exactly, I came quite close. However, this build not only hits the softcap for everything by itself, it also almost does it to the team and pets through buffs alone, after power boosted Fade and Group Invisibility combined with Maneuvers and Shadow Fall. Only other set that can do that is Force Field, and Force Field doesn't provide hefty -tohit, -res, -regen, -damage, team +recovery, team +regen, heals and res. So here's the build:

Illusion is a good set, and Dark Affinity is also a very good set. But I think that you're overly interested in cute numbers, here... the main defensive power of Dark Affinity is Darkest Night. You do not need to go to such defensive extremes on pure +Def when you have such strong -ToHit debuffs (and more from Dark Servant). Without Power Boost, this build will still put out great Defense and -ToHit, making practically every enemy start at their to-hit floor. So then hitting Power Boost is not going to add anything to the defense, except for protection against additional spawns.

I think that you're better off when taking such a strong defensive build to focus on any actual weaknesses, and for that reason I'd go with the Psy Mastery epic in order to get Indomitable Will. Alternately, go for more offense via Soul Mastery. But Power Boost on a build that already floors enemy to-hit chances without using it, seems to me to be unnecessary.

I think the power boost is so fade takes it past the softcap. Blacksly's right though, and if you perma PA, which you could do by switching in 4 basilisk for the hold pieces in blind and 5 entropic or decimation in for the devastation pieces and toxic proc in spectral wounds, softcap would be even more of a luxury.

Power boost can be used to have better holds as well, and the recharge procs can get me to permanent PA. Sacrificing the DPS pieces seems like a shame. For mez protection, clarion will cover most of it.

Ill just throw up my build. This was a actually a live build before shutdown.

I never build solely around defense. I found that doing that often handicaps me in other areas.

I dont think Ill/Dark needs to be softcapped. First off you should have PA pretty darn close to perma. Secondly with Two Pets in Dark Servant and Phantasm.. and a Decoy Phantasm.. and Phantom Army.. and MORE if you have Incarnate pets.. The mobs should be paying you much attention at all.. especially if you use Superior Invisibility..

Also since Deceive doesnt aggro you could stand there with all your pets running.. invisible.. spam and confuse the heck out of a mob and they should never even know you are there.

Yes you don't need the extra defense. But power boost is still a power that gives everyone on your team tons of defense and makes your mez effects last much longer, while the blasts can increase your recharge. And I didn't make any sacrifices in recharge in order to pick it up.
