Ridiculous facts about your time at CoH
« on: August 24, 2014, 08:48:53 PM »
I was wondering what sorts of extremely silly decisions or things you've done during your time playing CoH.

For example, I started playing on Infinity because it happened to be the name of my work computer (HPUX machine that could utilize names like that).

Or I kept the Black Hole (AoE intangible) power on my Dark Defender because I liked the idea of it. The silly part is I used it exactly once in about 5 issues.

Or I never made a fire/ blaster simply because they PO'd me too often in pvp with their "I'm better than everyone" taunting while running back to their pocket Emp for Fortitude.

What was so silly about your time playing CoH?

I had a music video machinma I was working on shortly after I started playing on 2008. Being the cheap college student that I am, I was trying to work on it entirely in Flash since it has some rudimentary video editing capabilities. (My version is really, really old. Flash MX from 2001ish.)

My clever plan failed: Flash crashes attempting to open video-heavy files after a certain point. However, I still have a lot of the base videos, and I now have access to Adobe Aftereffects ...

I should see about remaking this some day.

Yezz...Few months ago I bought Flash MX 2004 on Amazon, but despite the reg. number, Adobe would not help me register it, 10 year old software....>sigh<

CoH ridiculous incidents? I imagine some insane long TF's I spent time on. 3 or 4 hours.
However, I spent entire Weekends on CoH ....save for eating lunch, showering, sleeping.

I do remember taking a squishy character or two into a Posi TF only to have the team dissolve after a mish leaving only me on the team. I finished the TF solo and once it took me over 10 hrs. I don't remember the char but I was level 12 and the first solo mission took me like 2 or 3 hrs of trying new strategies.

And yes, it was long before temp powers and things like that.

Back when I first started playing and fall damage would kill you, I would be that guy offering tp's across steel canyon except I would just drop lowbies off of the highest building. I realize how horrible it was but since it happened to me countless times I didn't really care all that much ;). Lots of people got a kick out of it and after a good laugh I'd take them just about anywhere, however some people really got upset and would freak out in team chat, not realizing I could tp them straight from the hospital and kill them again. Usually after that they would quit the team and start the broadcast hate which I didn't mind either. I know it was horrible to do but in reality it's not that bad...

The other thing was back when Perez park was pretty much mandatory And there was no aggro cap I'd fly around gathering as many mobs I could and then drag them to a lowbie and watch the "@_@" appear in chat as a massive wave of enemies would run them over. Once again happened to me many times and was another "for teh lulz" moments when you were bored. I did however do this when there were three full lowbie teams of 8, they actually got through the gauntlet of death.

Despite all the early years of trolling I think my karma finally balanced after the AE/mailing system was released. I had an elec/fire brute IO'd out for defense, which sounds dumb but I could do max runs with a full team of 8 and only spent about 200mil on the thing. I would gladly take along anyone who asked instead of charging out the you know what for a couple runs. I would also mail 50+mil sometimes to random people I seen just to see what would happen. Even more often I would give the people at costume contests who didn't win but had great concepts free inf, usually more than the actual winners.

I think my dumbest move would have to be trying to organize a villain side hami raid at random... 4 hours of stressful organization all for nothing... But would I do it again after losing this game, he'll yeah.

Five years of playing and I'd never once been on a successful Hami raid.

Before AE came out I use to run TV farms and make fat cash. Honestly, it's one of the things I miss the most.

I bought a house without checking out the Internet situation and was only able to get satellite, I played CoV on a one second delay for over a year.

I pretty much exclusively played brutes(to 50). I had a Rob/FF MM, a Ice/rad corr, and a ice/kin corr, the rest were all brutes.

Since this was the first game of its type I played, it was 'obvious' to me that the thing to do was slot one of each allowed enhancement type in each power you had, including brawl, sprint, and rest. Took me an embarrassingly long time to figure out not to do that

Not shocked by this. They don't want to support a ten year old version. Did they offer an upgrade path? I'm also buried somewhere in the TOS is some clause saying that the activation license is only good for like 5 years and only to the original purchaser. I would guess that you bought this from a third party.

That's too funny. I would have done that too, but I quickly found someone (or maybe they found me) who wanted to play mentor to me.

Started playing at Issue 3 when the game released in Europe. My first character was well into 30s before I learned about being able to buy SO enhancements, I'd never even visited an enhancement store until I got to the unlockable one in FF

I started playing mid issue 6, I didn't spend my inf because, I read it was my influence I had with the population and I did not want to lower it. A friend of mine said spend it, it is the currency on the game. Before that I ran with whatever dropped mostly tos and a few dos, and fewer sos. For me it was not until level 35 before my friend asked me how I specced out.
One day the Phoenix will rise again.

In a fit of silliness, I made a [Brawl]-only Brute, solo, street sweep only, and got him to 50+alpha slot.  But y'all have heard enough about him, I reckon.

When I began this amazing game in 2004, I kept hearing from my friends that "you get your travel power at 14."  I never took the time to ask about the trams, I didn't even know they existed.  I ran to every mission, at times trying to take shortcuts through zones that I was woefully inexperienced to go through.  I remember trying to cut through IP from Steel Canyon to Kings Row.  Not a happy ending.  I entered IP and thought "Hey... why don't I just make a quick left and cut through the back of these buildings."  I jumped over the fence and landed right in the middle of a bunch of guys all dressed in three-piece suits.

I woke up in the hospital.

You guys are making start to remember all sorts of fun.

Long before Oro portals and SG portals, we had a SG only event where everyone had to create a brand new char. We then held a level 1 race from Ms. Liberty to back of the cemetery in Dark Astoria... I think. Did DA originally not have a min level to get in or am I remembering it incorrectly?

In a stroke of brilliance in my own mind I made a Ice/storm controller great in groups with artic fog + steamy mist and then ice slick + freezing rain but when trying to solo missions when I was not able to group was less exciting than watching paint dry (Realize I had 7 scrappers at 50 and only one non scrapper to 50)

Needless to say shelved and then deleted

Sounds very similar to what happened to me.  During the CoH beta, I don't think the trams were even working so I finished my first contact's missions in AP and my next contact was in Kings' Row (just south of the Galaxy City entrance; was a female NPC).  So, I traveled from AP to Skyway City and noticed, "wow, these mobs are red or purple...better tread carefully."

I walked/sprinted (was only lvl 5 or so) through SC and got to KR.  Thought the tough part was over because most mobs in KR were white or yellow.  Anyways, never been in KR before so I was trying to cut straight through to the NPC and jumped over a fence...why hello there red conned Vahzilok.  2-3 hits later I was dead.  :(   I was only 100-200 or so yards away from the NPC too. heh

Originally, yeah, entry was capped in the low-20s somewhere.  I forget exactly when that restriction was undone; forced to guess, is say somewhere around I16, when the team-based sidekicking took off.  Before then, I think similar challenges were made to get deep into what, I want to say Founders Falls...

Rolling energy blast not just for the knockback, but to keep stop having fun guys, scrubs and idiots from inviting me to their bad teams that'd wipe all the time.  Funniest thing, it worked, I almost always had better teams for it.
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

After I'd only been playing for 12 months, I checked how many hours I had played, and it was more than 2200 hours. Then I realized that was SLIGHTLY MORE time than I spent at my 40-hour-a-week job over that same time. I had played enough CoH for a full-time job. I was so shocked I stopped for several months. Then one day I decided being addicted to something like this was not the worst that could happen in life. So if you ever get worried about how much you're playing, my advice is DON'T LOOK. :)

Ok, you also meant to include SILLY I see.

When crafting came out and I saw the PISTOL temporary power, and decided to get that for my 4-foot-nothing elderly defender "Green Granny". It looks so ridiculously big in her hand, I kept getting, just so I could run around with it in my hand. If you target nothing (or friendlies), and hit the power, it whips out, and then you carry it around for 2 minutes or so. I did shoot it by mistake once in a while, so after ten shots I'd have to get the recipe again and re-craft it. It just got me laughing every time, for MONTHS. Strange how something so stupid can seem so humorous. I loved it so much that my next two characters were 4-foot-nothing grannies, and I even started a SuperGroup named "Pistol-Packing Grannies." By the time the novelty wore off I had a fully-stocked SG base, but of course almost nobody wanted to join an SG with such a stupid name, even if the base was awesome. If only dual pistols had been available at the time, I probably would have laughed myself into a coma. I'm going to have to try a dual-pistol granny when the game comes back.

I remember on Virtue there used to be the Brickstown Races.  All participants would roll a brand new character, no temp powers and run a lap around the Zig. Those were lots of fun

I think, probably the most ridiculous fact about my time playing CoH is I took it entirely too seriously. I looked at the defeat of my character as a bad reflection on the effectiveness of my build and my ability to mash specific keys in a timely manner. There were just rarely any valid reasons to get defeated, at least, that was my opinion.

Sure, I could see getting hammered at level 23 by a level 45 Malta ambush waiting outside Pandora's in Talos. But, to go in a typical mission, the possibility of getting clobbered by any NPC that wasn't an elite boss or an AV just seemed ridiculous, especially later in the game with temporary powers like The ring from Stephanie Peebles, the wolf, the shivan, incarnate pets, etc.

Yeah, I took that game way too seriously. Especially where badges were concerned. Silly badges. I do think having a lot of badges did earn you a measure of respect, though, at least from other badgers.

Speaking of videos!

Over the years I used Fraps to take a few short snippets of video here and there unrelated to that machinma project. I never bothered uploading them to YouTube, but I do have them on my personal webspace:

Let's see, similar to above, I had to solo the last part of a Synapse TF. One of my most favorite achievements, really. The GM ambush was the most memorable moment though: One of my teammates had come back, and I had spammed my predicament across all channels before exiting the instance which spawned the Paladin. The BIGGEST turn-out for a Paladin call-out I've ever seen had arrived to help: 50-odd heroes iirc, and he was down in seconds. On one hand, it was a bit anti-climatic, but on the other hand, it was pretty heartwarming seeing that many strangers and a few friends come to my aid =)

Made a character with the plan to not use any pool or travel powers. But it was Kin/elec (so that was cheating a bit), and then they made the fitness pool free, sooo nothing hard about that.

I did low-level Exploration badge runs, and got pretty good at it. Cheesed me off to no end when someone hosted a lowbie badge-hunting race and I didn't even win! (I think i was 2nd or third, but only because I was too proud to try and die and hosp it to get across IP).

Was playing on my Mind/Kin/Psi in the clockwork dimension map with a full team; The Clockwork King made short work of the invuln and fire tanks, so I took over. Between high psi resists, confusing CKs minions and using my healing powers, I successfully tanked an AV with my controller. In fact, I was initially just buying my team time to escape, but I kinda got "scrapper locked" into staying in combat. I eventually panned my camera around and saw the WHOLE team just standing on a nearby garbage pile, just watching me. I had to yell at them and come help: not because I was in any danger of dying, but because I couldn't quite out DPS the AV's regen, even with a regen debuff being spammed on him every 4 seconds. But yeah, that was as ridiculous as it was epic... for me, at least.

After my Mind/Kin had hit 50, but before Inventions or Incarnates, I spent most of my time with her TKing enemies into police drones, or seeing how high up I could levitate lvl 1s in AP.

I once trolled an MM in Recluse's Victory by using Repel to scatter his henchmen across the map. He got wise and dismissed them, but I kept his giant spider-bot and rolled it around the map. Whenever he would find me, I would yell "MINE!" and run off with it again.

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of at the moment =)

One of my favorite AV to solo with my scrappers was Marauder

I would use the Orbus portal just to farm him as an AV. I probably killed him while over 50 times solo

Oh so that was you!

I remember high levels dragging 100's of mobs down the streets of Perez.

I also had one level 20 guy invite me to a team,  TP me to a high building, then quit and leave me there! I was like level 4 or 5 or something so no big deal if I jumped off but I thought what a p***k. LOL

Yes I was definitely one of those people XD but if you think that's bad I definitely one up'd this. Tp'ing the lowbies trying to get to the tailor to the middle of steel canyon and letting them slowly maneuver around the mobs was another dirty trick, I would usually say if you get there I'll give you x amount of inf and tp them back :P one guy died five or six times before having a mental break down, after I gathered myself from laughing I just took him there and gave him a I think like 100,000 inf which was quite a bit at the time. After a couple days of trolling around though it got pretty boring so its not like I made this a daily habit...I was bad, but not sit there everyday thinking doing it over and over bad.

If it makes you feel any better the people I started playing with abused me all the time, they were all dead set on having a bunch of 40's where as I had like high 20's low 30's toons, definite altaholic. So whenever I was with them in high level zones guess who was the punch line to all the tp jokes XD

Where you also one of those people that would drag the GM's from Monster Island to Portal Corp where all the lowbies hung around looking to be powerleveled? I have to admit THAT was funny.

I agree it was hilarious, I can neither confirm or deny my involvement in this :P I wasn't big on farming early on in my CoH career so I don't think I personally did this to anyone, one of my friends tp'd me to the top of the hospital there though and trying to get back to the boat was a b. By the time I got into actual farming the aggro cap was in place. I spent lots of time messing around, whether it be with costumes or just running around looking for random people to interact with.

My worst trolling move ever was getting under the map in sirens call then tp foe someone down and watch them fall XD if you only had ss or sj there was no way for you to get out and they would have to wait for a gm :P one gm got pretty mad they had to keep coming back and I'm lucky there were like ten other people under the map with me, otherwise he probably would have just banned me >.> I stopped after that needless to say...

I remember one time I was training at Ms. Liberty when all of a sudden a *horde* of civilians (dozens and dozens) came running up and swarming all over her.  They wouldn't say anything, they just kept trying to climb all over her.  All the other players and I were confused, what kind of bug could do this?

Then I looked up to see the L50 blaster hovering about 30 ft up.

Apparently he had killed all the Hellion mobs around Atlas Square but stayed far enough up that they never had a chance to thank him (and then find a door to zone out).  And they kept following him so long as he stayed high enough and moved slow enough.

I never fully understood the completely awsomeness of this game until it was closed down. I think it has to do with my maturity as a person and not related directly to the game :)

I had a kinetics controller.

I was not 50 yet but pretty high. I used to fly around in Atlas or some other low zones and buff and heal lowbies.

One guy I was using the power steal and the heal buffs on his mobs to help him out and he starts broadcasting to me "Stop kill stealing!"

I was going to explain to him but I figured if he couldn't tell the difference what was the point.

Talking about TPIng someone we had a tank go afk in a mission back in the early days (I was running /sr and had no agro aura)  so we got tired of waiting someone had recall friend and we just ported him into the mobs so they would agro around him and nuked the crap out of the mobs. He was basically just a agro totem for us.

Fun stuff

Yeah, I remember civilians in Founders Falls that thought there was a bridge where no bridge existed, so they climbed into the air and walked 12 feet off the ground.

As for the guys in Portal Corp, I'm pretty sure they walked through walls right to the end of the game.

Didn't the Portal technicians have some buddies in the tech contact office under City Hall?

Two stories.

One, I was leveling a new character with two friends... very late at night. I wanna say 3-5am or so. And I'm new back to the game around i23 or i22, after having left around the second month after Going Rogue for personal reasons.

We decide, hey, lets sewer sweep! It'd been forever since anyone we knew had done it, and DFB made it pretty irrelevant but it was a flashback. We'd all leveled a toon or two that way, so it seemed fun! So we're down there... and all of a sudden... A RIKTI?! I freak out, try to target it, run away, I forget now, then it goes away, we keep fighting. A bit later, an IDF trooper?! This happened many times before I found out there were now costume powers to allow you to achieve such tasks.

But they kept it up, messing with my head for nearly 15 minutes.

Then one time I was exploring on my redside toon and this happened.

I cannot tell you how, or why, only that I did not alter this screenshot in any way or cause it to happen by luring enemies to this location.

edit:

This reminds me of all of those missions where you would save someone... and they would RUN full speed back into the mission proper from the entrance. That happened right up to the end.

I'd have moments when I would just fly down the waterfront streets of IP with my main, using Power Thrust to see how far I could knock the Council/5th into the water.  It was a curiously fun game to play, making the Nazis go for a swim.

I made a slenderman puppet muse and just made it stand in random places while I was AFK.

Other than that I just kind of played it straight.  Between CO and COX though I've developed a pretty solid roster of comic characters.

This is something that I do while playing CoH now (Icon), and it is completely ridiculous, but I can't help it. Every single time I have it up for my son to play, I MUST click on the store button before I close Icon just to see what will happen.

This reminds me of days they had server maintenance go over the alotted time. I would literally sit there clicking log in every couple minutes alt+tabbing in and out constantly. Could I have refreshed the server status page, easily, but the anticipation of what would happen is half the fun.

I remember one time, while my friend was testing COV out on it sbeta , that he did something strange in Mercy Island. The screen flashed and he was falling for about 15 seconds, when he was in a player empty Atlas Park. He was attacked by Hellions and killed them.. He was also silly enough to go nead a PPD drone and got zapped right back to Mercy Island medical bay

I replaced the really loud sound FX in the Portal Corp rooms with one of my favorite songs.   Every time I would walk into one of those rooms, it would start to play.   Backfired though...because I got sick of the song pretty quickly.   Ended up just replacing it with silence.

Made a character with the worst costume I could think of (complete with a story to explain it) and entered costume contests all the time.  I would stand there bragging about how I could not possibly lose.

Did not once get a comment from anyone....darn it.

Something like this was my first *whoa* moment in CoH, when my Ill/Kin Controller was on a Manticore TF, and the team leader got bent out of shape about two of the team members stealthing the third mission (the first one that wasn't 'defeat all') when he wanted to fight through, and ragequit... followed by his two friends... and a cascade of quits that left me solo on the team. And I decided that I'd seen all these stories about how Ill/Kin was such a hot powerset combo, and the worst thing that would happen was that I would faceplant against Hopkins in the last mission, so I kept going. And managed to barely survive defeating Hopkins to complete the TF. It gave me a new respect for the capabilities of that particular combination.

Ill/kin was an awesome combo.

I remember the char I was using now. it was a warshade. What finally worked was picking up starless step and using it to tp the Vahz one by one until there were few enough left for me to take care of them.
Until then, they were just crushing the squid. And I didn't have enough powers outside of squid form to do any damage.

Farming for a Healing badge for months if not years only to have it switched to an easier form ...

Hoarding respecs, temp powers, super inspirations and costume tokens that I never got to use.

Hoarding Purple, PVP and Mito enchancements I never got around for using.

All the toons I moved ($$$) to other servers only to be museum pieces I never touched again.

At least with my main, I always had to log out perched on a building. Also once I discovered Ninja Run, I would use it as my primary travel power. However, I didn't just run down the street. I slotted that sucker full of speed and jump enhancements, and bounced from building to building in any way I could. I'd use the fire escapes and edges of the windows to jump up the side of a building (as opposed to just flying up), or would run along the top the war walls. My route through Peregrine involved running along the power lines, bouncing between a couple buildings, and kicking snipers off the rooftops until I reached Portal or the boat. I pretty much went out of my way to NOT take the fastest/easiest route from Point A to Point B. It was fun though.

Pre-aggro-cap herding.  Going to Monkey Island in FF and pulling literally every monkey that you could see into one place, hitting foot stomp, and actually being able to see the meter for monkey kills jump.  That was so much fun.

Going into Perez Park with a friend.  You go left, they go right, you both herd your half of the map, then meet in the middle on the other side.  Just watching a tidal wave of baddies rushing down the streets.

And the Crystal Titan room in the Eden trial.  Sigh.  The single greatest loss to the aggro cap.

I saw this topic so it gave me a bit a nostalgia so I thought I would post.

I was interested in this game because it had flying and super speed and things almost other games at the time didn't have...if they did it was a power that you would click to get a short burst of speed for 3 seconds and then take 30 minutes to recharge.

A very silly fact when I started I made a scrapper dark melee and dark armor....I hated the character....ran out of energy way too much and felt like the speed of attacks was terrible.

I then made an illusion/empathy controller.....and really got into that character.

I read tons of forums....and I recall seeing so many couch back quarter back players telling everyone what to play and how.

Even in game had way too many people telling me to "be quiet" "stand back" "just heal".

I hated that....

So I did things solo and used to fly around for hours every day and helped players in steel canyon....I would show up and heal them.
I did this so much I guess I became kind of notorious on my server.....and so when the very first special event happened, with the big pumpkin headed giants(who later became eochi) people let me just sort of fly in and help.

After a while I used to get asked to help people who would set the difficulty up to the highest level and be unable to complete missions.....literally they would make up stories on how they could do this or that....and never could show me.

It seamed I was also one of a few people who used alot of invisibility....so I would ninja missions.....get tot he end and teleport the group....I did this before it was the thing people did.

I was one of the first that helped beat the hammidon on the server I played on....and I think I single handedly changed a lot of people's view of this game.

I used to take new players with me....to go on grand adventures in the shadow shard...as I had group flight...I would get on a task force and people would say ...."its impossible"...."we cant do it".....and I would have them stop and listen to some strategy I came up with....and they would then do it and we would win.....barely...but we would do it.

I recall being on a team when the special task force in the hive with the crystal guardian was almost impossible to get a team for....and you had to be a certain level to play in it......and being with a team of tanks who gave up......to which I guess I got them to give it another go.....I a lowley controller at the time...inspired my team to try again and we beat it.

I inspired countless teams and groups over the years I guess....I had more friends on my friends list then I new what to do with.....and had to be honest....I couldn't actually remember the majority of them.

I even played with Misty Lacky and Golden Girl and even the developers at differing points.....

Got killed by a developers during the big arena pvp testing....because my defender was doing a little too much debuff....I think she was the reason the defender set of psionic lance and storm powers got nerfed so hard core.

Sooo.....anywise I had to post.....so many good memories...and so many fun players to play with.....

heck I recall playing a differing character on another server....and getting invited to a pick-up group where the leader...actually claimed to be me....their character was even modeled after my illusion/empathy......I was flattered....I also never said a word.....since it was interesting to see a another player get inspired that much.

And that's what I recall the most.....the players in the end....who inspired and dared to inspire others.....in a game about dreams....and how if you tried hard enough....your dreams could come true.

My first 50 was an Energy/Energy Blaster that I picked solely for the visuals, knowing nothing about how the ATs worked or how Knockback worked. My time learning the game was like learning to drive a manual with no clutch and the emergency break on the whole time.

My experience as well, except I picked a SS/Inv Tank. Not realizing having SS would not allow me to pick up or bend stuff, and that Inv was more of a concept than a reality. LOL.

I farmed so much I could actually Headbang while I was farming \m/.

I mainly soloed because I'd be so tired from work. That my ability to play would usually get me labeled as a bad player.

My first 50 heroe was a claws/regen scrapper, my first 50 villain was a thugs/poison MM.

I played with a small group of friends on Infinity and near the end we all switched to Freedom villain side.

We remade all our main villians and street sweeped up to about level 15. Skipping all the contacts (it was awesome).

My first encounter with an enemy mob I thought I was pvping. LOL!

I never really RPed but if COH comes back I have a character in mind. :P

I still have all my MM macro written down in a note book ready to be cracked back open (Dear God Please!).

When the game went F2P I had almost enough tokens to unlock lifetime IOs (like 24 out of the 25 necessary or something), yet never got a character to level 50. Closest I came was like level 47 on my Stalker, my first character ended up as a 44 tanker by the time the game shut down.

I was really, really bad about leveling characters, but I still had so much fun in the game. I loved doing all the little storylines from the different contacts, and if I missed one I'd make a new character to do those storylines on.

I never hit 50 either! :P I was wayyy too busy doing all the different story arcs I missed because of the choices I made earlier in my heroine career, in Ouroboros, that I didn't made it past 41! XDD A ton of them weren't even giving me xp anymore because I had to be scaled down to lvl 15 but I didn't care, I'd do them anyway for the passion of crime fighting and saving the world! :)

I remember high levels dragging 100's of mobs down the streets of Perez.
That reminds me of the time my brother and I were running down the street in Perez on our way to a mission. was a little bit ahead of me and tended to aggro all the Skulls before I got there. Neither of us were attacking, just running to the mission. I found myself running along side dozens of Skulls, all intent on getting the scrapper (my brother). I had the sudden image that my character was playing along, "yeah! get that no good hero!", hoping that the mob wouldn't notice that he was wearing heroic spandex...  ???

There was one Double XP weekend, not long after IOs came out that I was Pimping out my main toon, I either blacked out..or fell asleep after about 25 hours of doing nothing but Katie Hannon TFs...and continued to play half competently, all I remembered was Zoning into the 10 times the victor mission...then blinking and it being done...and someone asking If I was going to zone out..

I think, the most ridiculous thing about my time at CoH was this crazy perception I had of how mediocre of a player I was. In my sig, I have a quote by John Cleese, who, in my mind is one of the wittiest men on the planet. I really had no idea that I was mediocre. Probably less than mediocre because in the first couple of years, I was playing on a laptop that barely met the minimal requirements. I'd enter a mission, and by the time I'd "zone in", I'd be dead. I'd look to see what killed me, and there'd be nothing. Off to the hospital, and a long hike back to the mission entrance. This time, I'd have a wakie, just in case.

I re-entered the mission, and again, I was dead when I zoned in, but I couldn't see the first mob. So, I popped my wakie, and then I took a couple of hits from some invisible mobs! No idea what they were. I called in a support ticket, and explained to them that I was getting clobbered by invisible mobs. He completed the mission for me, and that was that. Only later did I realize that my laptop was acting up, with all manner of issues, hard drive, integrated video card - I think playing the game for 12-14 hours a day was working that laptop too hard, getting it too hot. In any event, I was glad when it died so I upgraded, making my own desktop after weeks of careful planning and shopping, with kudos to Father Xmas from the forums for his guides to building a machine by myself.

The really ridiculous part was that I wasn't using the computer for anything else but playing coh. I mean, I had an email address, but I wasn't in the habit of emailing back then. There was no facebook, I don't even think MySpace was out back then. I spent that ridiculous sum of money to make a computer just so I could play CoH much better, and decrease those insufferable 2 to 4 minutes of load time (per each zone - shadow shard tfs were excruciating before I upgraded) and more importantly, actually not be the guy who was zoning in as the mission was being completed. It was nice to actually arrive at a mission door first or second, instead of being dead last. Gave me more time to go get cookies and stuff.
Those who have no idea what they are doing genuinely have no idea that they don't know what they're doing. - John Cleese

During slow times i used to entertain myself by Taking my namesake lvl 50 Elec/Energy Blaster to lowbie zones and punching baddies in the face. I would make a game out of seeing how far I could make them fly backwards.

I had so many 'n00b' moments...  *sigh*
Started playing in 2004 and was there when the servers went dark... but took a lot of time off in between...
I would be gone an issue or two at a time (due to work and RL) and always come back feeling like I was 'lost'
Luckily, I had many good friends in the game that helped me along each new issue and always welcome be back, over and over again.

Still my favorite mission was FrostFire... but getting there as a low level toon was always a challenge... but it did teach me a lot about not getting to close to draw argo and to get around most all the maps and missions maps... with some patience.

If all goes as planned... I look forward to many more 'n00b' moments in the years to come!

My wife and I (mostly my wife) used to sit in Atlas Park, critique people's costumes, and offer to escort them to Icon and pay to have them changed if they were really bad. We both stopped drinking since then. :-[

My original main on my second account never made it to 50. I think I started that account in '06 and as far as he ever got was 47 or 48. I don't know how many 50s I actually had, but he wasn't one of them.

I never really had a problem helping other people level, but I generally avoided PLing my own characters like the plague.

I used to give all my purples away to people in a couple of chat channels I was in until one person yelled at me and promised to harass and haunt me 'till the end of my days if I didn't start using them or at least making a little money off of them. So I started hoarding them.

I started the game when City of Villains came out.
I thought, WOW!! ME?! A VILLAIN IN A GAME?! IT'S ALWAYS THE HERO BUT HERE I COME!  (i was so young! :) )

Created my first character, then boom! CITY OF VILLAINS! loading.... Loading... BREAKOUT!

While I was running through breakout, I was so amazed. Oh joy!!! I'm a criminal mastermind that Summons ZOMBIES. ZOMBIES!
Then i got a glimpse of the little battles the Arachnos vs Longbow had during breakout. I saw one of the heroes use some cloud power that summoned a cloud and struck lightning. My ignorant self thought, Wow when do I GET that power?!

I didn't find out until many MANY failed alts and 6 months later that storm summoning was a hero only power at the time...

I made a healing class character called "Jesus the healer"
and made him a black Jeff Lebowski character. (from the Big Lebowski) He called everyone dude.
Someone got annoyed with the idea of me playing as a black character and I got the character
blocked with the name being all weird.

It was a shame, my crew thought he was awesome.
He healed a lot of superheroes!

The dumbest thing I did, that I care to share, was leveling to level 8 , but only being trained to level 2.  I was in Kings and didn't know where the trainer was.

The second dumbest would be joining PUG's in the Hallows.

I don't know when City of Heroes will return, or do I?

My first character was a claws/SR stalker. I attacked, ran away until I hid, attacked, ran away until I hid, attacked, ran away until I hid... I thought this was how the character had to be played. I hated the game. HATED the game. HOW BORING. HOW SLOW. Until I accidentally hit more attack buttons on my way out of a fight and continued attacking. WHAT DO YOU MEAN I CAN STAY AND HIT THINGS WHEN I'M NOT HIDDEN? Oh, this changes EVERYTHING!!!

I was once tired enough that I should REALLY have just logged out and gone to bed.

Instead, I tanked a mission (one of the Freakshow missions on the Dreck map) with my eyes closed for about 66% of the time.  THEN I logged out and went to bed :)

Ice/Ice tanker, open my eyes to move the the next spawn, land in the middle, close my  eyes and start with the Energy Absorption, Ice Patch, Frozen Aura, Tab to target nearest, taunt.  repeat until the sounds of the rest of the team breaking Freaks goes away, open eyes, move to next spawn.

That toon was never a damage monster, but by god he could hold aggro like nobody's business.

That makes me want to get out my Dark/Ice tank. Lordy but /ice was a perfect damage set to make a tanker tough to kill.

I was the 2nd player live in Europe, on Defiant - after having been in beta for about a month. My main, Boltmeister (aka Boltie or Mayor of Faceplant City) was an en/en blaster / blapper, rerolled too many times, frakked up my build more than once and was generally a chatty guy.

Now, back to the story. I had asked to join The Contingency SG and when it was time for my trial with an existing member this happened during normal working hours. So I kinda crouched behind the monitor in the office and hoped that I would be kinda left alone for the next 90 minutes or so. Well, I wasn't. And the boss was none too pleased (my first and last gaming session while at work) - got off with a written warning.

Anyhow - I had a good few years on Defiant with the awesome members of The Contingency / The Last Stand. And I probably was the last in the group to ding 50 (which was an awesome moment with farming "that special mission where we absolutely weren't allowed to complete the final goal, so it could be reset and repeated" with an all-SG team working with one goal only - getting me from 48 to 50). Great memories, long hours on Defiant and a _lot_ of faceplanting. At one time I think I held a server-wide record in xp-debt

Well, there was a period of time where the infectious lightning power from one of Hamidon's Mitos would keep jumping forever as long as there were valid targets for it to jump between. Right after a Hami raid on Virtue i Ouroed out to Nemmie's time ship and then to Atlas Park with the lightning still on me. Of course it started jumping around draining hp and end and so on. i did keep it jumping between me and a police drone for a while, but eventually some other heroes came near enough and it started dancing through them spreading confusion and alarm... IIRC i eventually flew up high when it was on me where it died due to not having a valid target in range.
Mostly harmless and even more fun than shooting other heroes with the Sewer Trial Particle Rifle.

I built a machine from an old modified electric train controller, a small metal plate with a cam, and a popsicle stick. I used a C-clamp to mount it to my desk. When turned on, the motor moved the cam which the popsicle stick was mounted to and the stick would bob up and down. I'd set it over my keyboard to keep hitting a key all day while I was at work, which prevented my character from going AFK. I would leave my main logged in all day, resting in lava in a mission, just to earn the Damage Taken badges.

I don't know how rediculous it would be considered. But, I recall a time when I was flying through Kings Row on my level 50 Illusion/FF controller. Saw a couple of thugs bragging on the corner. I decided to force bolt one of them and he had the temerity to yell to his buddy, as he was sent soaring over a rooftop, "Catch you later."

Not me personally, but my 10 year old daughter had just made the move from Atlas Park to Steel Canyon.  She was being chased by one mob or another, and thought she would stand by some policemen to be safe.

She had a rather rude introduction to the 5th Column that involved faceplanting.

You do realize that the only thing Shivans did to overcome regen was increase DPS, right? Shivans had no -regen debuffs, only -def. (Just asking since i've known many people who didn't.)

I preferred the Vanguard HVAS for when -regen was needed, myself.  Could only carry one, and they were trickier/more tedious to get than Shivans, but hell, it's a big, stompy mech.

And I can't quite believe that I remembered that with so little effort...

Well aware of that.

It took us a few tries to actually get Imperious down through all of his resurrections while dealing with the Nictus'(Nicti? What's the plural here?), but the last attempt everyone who could dropped the Shivans, popped some inspirations, and just mauled the crap out of him. Regen while still there just couldn't keep up with all that extra damage on top of frequent and repeated Assassin's Strikes.

Most fun I had on my Stalker, in fact. Was rather entertaining watching some of the AVs virtually explode when the fights started. :P

Temporary DPS pets could trivialize most content, one of the more dramatic examples i witnessed was when we first used the "spawn as many pets as possible, fire off as many AoE buffs as you can and just power through all the blooms, all of them" Hamidon strategy on Virtue. In addition to filling the area with far more entities than the client could render at once it slowed down the server clock quite a bit.

i sort of wish there was an option for a display that showed server "time dilation", it would be interesting to see exactly how much slower server clock ticks were during events like Hami and Mothership raids, AP33, and the like.
