This is making me crazy...

Wot the frell are the meanings behind the yellow/green/red dots under the names and above the avatars here?

Sometimes I have two.  Sometimes I have one.  Some people have red ones in some areas and green ones in others.

Where's the map key?

Tenzhi

Perhaps it indicates amount of activity in a particular section?
When you insult someone by calling them a "pig" or a "dog" you aren't maligning pigs and dogs everywhere.  The same is true of any term used as an insult.

Perhaps... or for a day...  Or color coded for being able to mod one area and not the other.

I dunno.

I did some research into the bulletin board system that Tony implemented on this site.  Although the source code's been modified somewhat, a few hours of delving into the deepest, darkest functions and calls of the system.  Into the labyrinthine depths of code I ventured, with naught but my ever-dimming flashlight and a SQL coding book 5 years out of date.

You may not like what I've found:

The yellow squares are indicators of the likelihood of the user to give pie to the poster below them.

Seems plausible.  I'm strongly inclined to keep all pie to myself and possibly steal yours.

Fairly sure the red blocks are for moderators.  I imagine some people (like Tony) are red everywhere, and some people (like project leads for Plan Z: Pheonix City) are only mods in one area, so only red there.  I'm color-blind, so I've never noticed green ones.

As for how many?  It seems to me to be related to the rank under your name.  Underlings get one, minions get two, lieutenants get three, bosses get four, elite-bosses get five.  Not 100% on that.

Gamal:  "We don't live over there." Aram:  "We don't?"
Gamal:  "No.  We live over there." Aram:  "... But it's all on fire."
Gamal:  "Yes it is, Aram.  Yes it is."

Well... I have Admin privs... look how many blocks I get!

(Oh, and I always thought of them as orange, not red... until this thread.)

If the dots are yellow, it indicates the number of posts (as does a user's title.)

If the dots are green, it indicates that the user is a moderator within the section the current thread was posted.

If the dots are red/orange and there are four of them, it indicates that the user is a forum admin/moderator throughout the forums.

If the dots are red/orange and there are five of them, it indicates that the user is a network admin (with all the privileges of the forum admins and then some.)

And to think the whole time I thought we were playing red light green light.  You mean I've been running around my desk all this time for absolutely no reason?   :gonk:

OK seriously, tho, I thought they were equalizer levels, and the more dots the louder the person was saying what they were typing.  Red means extremely loud, pretty much shouting.    :P

OK now I'm being serious.  I had no idea what they meant, thanks for clarifying.    ;D

I read that entire sequence expecting at least some bit of geek humor... like a "there... are.... four.... dots!" reference or something.   Please modify your post to reflect that.

Thank you.

Also relative to what you are worth if killed. And the likelihood that "FPARN" will find its way to this board.  ;D
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

OK, I officially cannot look at the forums in class, anymore. Not a good place to LOL. :)
