Another spiritual successor seems to have snuck in under the radar (at least mine).  Ship of Heroes.  Looking around the website (https://www.shipofheroes.com/), it sure has some familiar elements.  I will be watching their progress with great interest.

Considering a lot of their initial pitch art is a mix of images from CoH, CO, and some general photoshopped artwork, those elements should look familiar. Some people were gushing over the short timeline in the initial announcement, and while it is ambitious the end of that timeline basically puts them where the other successor projects were four years ago. Not that there's anything wrong with that, and advances in engine design since the others launched may allow them to catch up faster, especially if they have access to some very deep-pocketed backers. At this point i'm waiting to see and hear more, but i hope they do well and can deliver on what they're proposing.
So far so good. Onward and upward!

I'm sure I'll try all the successor projects. I think my order of enthusiasm is something like Valiance>CoT>All Else.

Valiance seems to be the closest to playable with an Alpha soon, while CoT may have more to offer and be more polished when it launches initially. I hope they all do well and create some buzz/interest in the super hero MMO world.

All said, and no offense to the successors, I'd take an I23 CoX in maintenance mode over anything really. I have so much love for the old girl.

My first preference would actually be APR, but almost any game that does better job than CO of capturing the feel and dynamics of original CoH will get some of my $.

@Nix:
My sentiments exactly.  However, I would opt for APR, H&V, Ship of Heroes, the rest.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!  Infinity Server...

I forgot about APR. They've been silent for some time, are they still recreating zones and such? Last I remember from them was the April Fool's Joke about Galaxy city (I think).

My first thought was "City of Heroes, but on a ship?  You mean like Speed 2?"

Then I started thinking about the other possibilities.  The Under Siege 2 version would be City of Heroes, but on a train.  It would be a 2D side scroller.  The Die Hard 2 version would be Airport of Heroes.  The M-ESRB version would be Villains on a Plane.

I have had it with these *&#&&^%-ing Snakes on this *&#&&^%-ing plane!  The rewards are horrible!

Let's just hope it's not City of Nilbog.

Paragon Avenger

Nerf City, where even one mission can be a grind.

Paragon Avenger

Ship of Heroes?
Aaaarr, that be a good idea, matie!

I've been playing some Cities: Skylines over the holidays, and I dreamed last night that I was playing a superhero MMO that used a city simulator for the background environment.

Need to tweak that radar for near objects :P

More like expand beyond this thread, which is something I've not done in a long time. Mainly, because I hoped the revival was our quickest path to playing any kind of CoH again, since all of the successor projects seem to move forward at a glacial pace, if at all.  So, this was all I was interested in.  Hopefully, this project will be different.

I hope they ran all that content by a lawyer specializing in IP.  That's a lot of CoH borrowed IP from the looks of it.  Hopefully it's different enough to survive legal challenges.  I'd bet on at least one from NCSoft pretty soon.

Otherwise, a mouse will very likely visit one (or more) of their city ships since it look a lot like CoH.  Do like the Unobtanium from that journey to the center of the earth movie from a few years ago.

As i recall that's all supposed to be placeholder art (obviously largely reusing CoH assets) since they just got started putting a game together and don't have professional artists of their own on board yet. Which does mean they're at least four years behind the other successor projects and have a bit of catching up to do. i think part of the idea of the concept is that they can launch with a smaller number of zones and add more as they go along as the ship travels to new worlds/space stations/habitats. Which is an interesting way to build a content gating system into the game's lore and justifies having a relatively small "world" at launch.

That was what I was thinking in terms of how long before they'd be ready to bring in players.  It's a neat concept building city ships instead of different universe cities.  I was just thinking their was a bit of overlap with all of it together.  NCSoft probably wouldn't care about taking defender as it's very generic or blaster or scrapper but taking all six types using the same names would seem a bit too plagiaristic to me.
