Quote from: Joshex on January 09, 2016, 02:47:45 AMno wonder aliens wont make contact with us if they exist, we're backwards and crazy, we're pyromaniacs obsessed with the power of explosives! -man's first design of a motor? the internal combustion engine. "if it goes boom things move away from it, if those things are round they go further, and if they explode that makes it even better!", "hey sam lets find a way to create electricity in mass quantity, *nuclear explosion* OMFG IT'S AWESOME, PEOPLE WILL LOVE THIS!!" I mean thank God we have videogames, current theories say people play games to express their inner desires they would normally just bottle up because they aren't welcomed/possible in the world, just so happens a lot of videogames contain many goals to blow stuff up, I hardly think it's a coincidence.

The first industrial age engines were steam engines.

I know the movie was in theaters for longer than a week but could we have spoiler tags on the topic of the new movie?  Thanks.

Fair enough.

So... was that ever disproven?  ;)
There are papers that claim that the presence of the Moon stabilizes the Earth's axis of rotation (Laskar, Joutel, and Robutel), and that it doesn't (Waltham).

I've always had a suspicion that Yoda wasn't concerned about Luke defeating Vader.  He even tells Kenobi's force ghost that "there is another."  I think he always knew that when Luke confronted Vader, the worst case scenario was not Vader killing Luke, it was Vader turning Luke.  I've always thought that was the importance of the cave on Dagoba: to teach Luke that the real enemy wasn't Vader, it was the possibility of becoming Vader.  Yoda was making sure that win or lose, Luke wouldn't turn.  What I think Yoda didn't consider was the possibility that Luke could be tempted by the dark side strongly enough to defeat Vader, and yet back away and not fully embrace it, which is ultimately what saves both him and Anakin.

That's really good back story.  Having read Lucas' other works, that last part is a better explanation that I think George could have ever come up with on his own.

I have no doubt that Lucas by himself was all 'Oh Anny is really a softy and will come to his senses at the last minute hur hur.  Now give me a glowy force ghost special effect for the ending scene.  And get the battle-scar makeup ready for the big reveal!'

Okay, Arcana is a brilliant mathematician and an engaging and informative writer. That said, the only spelling error i see her make with any frequency is leaving out apostrophes.

Whether accidental or intentional, this one made my day.

Arcana, the easy way to handle the "it" situation is to remember that the only time you use the apostrophe is when it is a contraction for it is.  Or, it's is always the contraction for it is.
I will go down with this ship.  I won't put my hands up in surrender.  There will be no white flag above my door.  I'm in love, and always will be.  Dido

The directions this thread goes to while away the time is positively amusing!

Did you earn a college degree in Film Studies? I did. 4.0.

So my philosophy degrees and gpa mean what, I have a better grasp of the entirety of Being than all y'alls? Damn, now I'm going to have to come up with a new emergency toilet paper plan :P

Remembering isn't the problem.  The problem is my fingers type, not my brain.  My brain spell checks afterwards, and sometimes it gets lazy.

Occasionally, I notice as I get older sometimes my fingers type completely different words than my brain was composing at the time.  Usually just a single word is errant in a sentence, and sometimes it's not clear why the substitution occurred.  I mean, I understand the neurology, but that's not the same thing as reconciling it with self-awareness.  Recently I was typing something like "the change-control approved schedule for this configuration change should be extended if necessary" and somehow the single word "this" became "goat."  I'm not sure you can really call that a "typo."

I got an A in quantum mechanics.  So I think it means you have a better and not better grasp of existence, until I observe your diploma.

Maybe we should just ditch the Bring Back CoH thing and just keep this thread open in perpetuity, this is easily as entertaining as any MMO.

Lulz. I'll send them right over. Hopefully your observing them will change them to something useful.

Oh hey speaking of Star Wars - the new comics (Chewbacca #5) retconned Chewie a medal

I had teachers in middle school tell me that the apostrophe is never needed (even when it is a contraction...it's should be its according to them). Don't know why they told me this, but it's what they said in school.

It's frustrating in its own special way.

I know I'm late, but I agree with Arcana that science is about extrapolation.

Take for example the electron.
Scientists have no way of determining where an electron is at an exact moment, thus the electron cloud model.

Basically, probability and statistics are used to determine where an electron would most likely be at. If an electron somehow has a 99.9% chance it would be at this spot in the electron cloud, then we can confidently say it will be there, but in truth it might not be.

I can confidently say that I miss CoH/V and I'm ready to take out some Longbow   ;)

Shibboleth

In an atomic orbital the electron never has a specific location. You can speak of the probability of interaction at a specific point, but that is not the same thing as being the electron's location.

the content in this thread has really degraded since the last time I checked for updates.  Are we arguing who has the higher GPA now?  I guess talking about ToHit debuffs and max end regen has run its course *finally*

we need a positive shot in the arm here

I have to agree. Sure grammatical errors can be a distraction for the argument, but, it shouldn't take away from the substance of the augment. If the only errors of an argument you can find negative is grammatical error, that shows you are scraping the bottom of the barrel to find try to find a reason (Any reason) to discredit the person you are arguing aginst.
