I feel much the same. I miss the game and many of the people I played with.My husband and our small group would play with pugs most of the time and had so much fun(never understood the dislike of pugs from people)and while like others I hope Irish Girl and COT all the luck in the the world but I'm really only wanting COH back.I want my non moving hair and boxing glove hands and my rooted stance and everything else people used to fuss about :).Thanks to all involved in getting the game back and to those here
that understand that we all miss it.

And to those who have not tried it Icon is so much win!!!!!

I had a thought, would the spiritual successors consider making a zone or at least part of a zone for our fallen brothers and sisters?  No enemies and perhaps civies who speak well of fallen players.

I believe City of Titans is actually planning this.

Hehe, amazing how much one misses the simpler graphics of the good games, cause they reminded you of how much gameplay was the focus then.
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

To me it is a reminder that pretty/advanced graphics don't make a good game.  I would play this one just as much as I ever did (well, within reason) despite the dated graphics, just because it is a better game in the parts that really matter, than any others that I have tried.  I might be partly nostalgia, but mostly it is just wanting to play a game that I thoroughly enjoy playing.

Graphics don't matter if the game play is there at least to me. My friends and i still run back to Battlefront 2 because the game play is just so good as an example. CoX had the game play and a general tone that no other game has been able to capture since.
If we set it on fire it'll burn....but that'd leave evidence...I KNOW ! COMPLETE ATOMIZATION! WOOOO!

Ryo Kinsaru

CoX had the gameplay, and the individuality, while giving a strong sense of welcome and community. After the tragedy I tried many MMO's and the only game that ever even got close for the quality of people to hang out and group with was EQ2. You could play how you wanted, behave how you wanted, even RP how you wanted. There were less trolls, less elitists, and more helpful players who would go out of their way to get you to your goals than in every other game I have ever played combined. Hell, I even got along with most of those "blueside" people! :P
I can't think of anything clever to place here as I am currently over-caffeinated on very little sleep. All the cool people have a signature, so I will drop random text here trying to fit in.

One of the things I liked about CoX was the fact it wasn't in mideval time like the 100 odd mmos going strong today.  If I wanted to fight elves, gnomes, trolls, minotaurs and other mythical creatures, I have 100 other mmos to play.  Nor was it like the 20 of futuristic mmos still playable.  I like to watch star trek.  I don't want to be captain picard.  CoX was, frankly, in today's time.  Several of you have brought up the dated graphics, but it is the comic book look that makes this game.  The playability is great, but I can get that from other mmos.  Not all of them but many of them.

I think the powers that be forgot what this game was about.  It was about me building the hero of my choice and being in the comic book.  And enteracting with other comic book heroes.  That's why I came here in the first place.  It just so happens I made a lot of friends.

So here we are today, huddling around this camp fire hoping that NCSoft will change their minds and put CoH back in operation or sell (or give) it to someone who would.  They created it but didn't understand it.  They still don't.  They never did.  I doubt they ever will.  Yes I know Crytic Studios actually created it.  They created champions online.  It didn't have the right feel to it.  Feels like a CoH knock off.

Our other camp has several smaller fires with groups huddling around each fire hoping a spiritual successor can recapture the spirit.  I wish them the best of luck and hope they can but believe they won't succeed unless they can get the IP so they can incorporate it into their games.  Without that IP, I fear they'll end up feeling like a CoH knock off too.

I am greatful for the efforts of those trying.  Ironwolf's efforts especially so.  I think Ironwolf's efforts are the key to making this work.  I wish each the best of luck.

Umm, could you maybe make us a list?

Thunder Glove

Yeah, I've found MMOs that shared one or maybe two of the things I loved about CoH, and a whole ton of things that were the opposite of things I liked about CoH.

I couldn't agree more with the things you have stated here.  The graphics were never a big issue for me.  The comic book graphics contributed greatly to the charm of the game.  The updates to graphics that the developers incorporated into the game were just...about....right.  In my opinion hyper-realistic graphics can produce diminishing returns.

As to the fan base, CoH's was, quite simply, the best.  The fan bases of other games I've tried do not compare favorably to it....at all. There weren't as many punks spouting off in the chat bar about their teammates failings.  Instead, what you got was veterans taking the time to help out newbies and those who did not ... quite... understand the game's mechanics.

The Cryptic developers "got" the game.  NcSoft didn't.  And I think the differences between those two boil down to culture.  The fan base of CoH consisted of individualistic westerners who appreciated the individualistic elements of the game as they related to character creation and game play.  Correct me if I'm wrong, but the NcSoft games that are big hits in Korea and the Far East have a different dynamic and simply do not play well in the West.  When the shutdown announcement came, the fierceness of the reaction by CoH's fan base stunned the powers that be in NcSoft, and the reluctance of that fan base to transfer its business to their other games, such as Aeion (sp) left them puzzled and confused.

Anyway, that's my take on it.

To me the graphics even to right now standards were great. The only grips I had was when you used some stealth powers, your cloth will graphically clip (the open button jacket and if you wear sneakers with dark color pants, the white socks part will show) and the "mitten hands" Other than that everything else was fine.

I would assume that would be because they just took the expedient route of stealth and just gave the character and their clothes some percentage of transparency. Since the pants were semi transparent, you could see the semi transparent sock under them. It would have take much more extensive code to hide the hidden clothing when everything was transparent from stealth. Remember, this was the first MMO Cryptic had created. I'm not sure that they had the coding expertise to be able to pull it off.

For all the talk of the newer games and how much better they look Icon has shown me over and over that COH is as good as any and better than most of today's games and years ahead of it's time.Agree about at some point the newer games as clean as they are just do not look quite right. The screen shots I now take in Icon and new costumes I make continue to prove just how great our game was and is.

Blackout

Agreed, many of the newer and more graphically impressive games today always end up looking really samey to me so I've never quite understood why so many people place so much value on making the graphics of a game look "More modern". Coh on the other hand and especially CoV still feel really unique even today, simmilarly to how WoW has kept its graphics relevant by stylizing them to the max coh/cov did the same but in a bit more of a subtle way.

Interesting segment about Game Preservation from Game Spot after a company decides to axe them. The second segment is about games that do require a server and how that is the new dilemma in preservation compared to just making Roms:

All this talk of simple graphics is ok, but I absolutely HAD TOO update my card when Ultra Mode Graphics came around, even then, because of my iffy internet connection I had to curb it some. But I was blown away but Ultra Mode. . . Having seen the UE4.7-ish graphics though, I gotta say I am drooling, and this time I am ready with a high end card already installed! Bring on the visual loving!
We're almost there!  ;D

I don't know about you or if it's just icon. But I still can't run around with everything at maximum in icon even with a r9 295x2 in my system. Some places will drop below 22- 30 frames. Especially in rogue isles and imperial city. And sadly cox will not use the second gpu at all. I think the game has lots of issues such as the tree problem they discovered in city of titans because I'm able to run newer games with settings on high and no problems.

Really?  And here's me worrying that with my single R9 280x, the game will be TOO fast to be playable if it returns.  Every single zone I've tried so far in Icon is ridiculously smooth and fast.

I've seen more and more people lately forgetting about the 'tweaking' aspects of gaming systems. They'll have their power scheme set to balanced, they've never emptied a cache, and their visual settings are on 'best appearance'. Things along that line go a long way, and simply slotting a high-end video card doesn't cover all of the bases. By the way, I'm not implying that that's what either of you is doing, just that it's something to consider.

Oh, I keep my machine well maintained and in tip top form for the best performance possible. Then I crank every game setting to the max possible, to see how bad it can get, and then reduce it bit by bit until I get the performance I want.  In the case of CoH/Icon, everything that can be maxed out, is maxed out, and it's TOO FAST!  Pretty sure that with super speed, I wouldn't be able to control my char at all in tunnels...
