Lol isn't Nimoy Jewish? That had to feel odd for him

Or the actor http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Clary  that played Lebeau on Hogan's Heroes. He was a concentration camp survivor, then lands a job on a show that parodies WW2.
In fearful COH-less days

It is illegal in Germany to buy or sell anything that has Nazis, Nazi symbols, etc. It wasn't pandering, it was a legal issue. Cryptic solved it in pretty much the same way Wolfenstein did: "Lets...make them...NOTzis!".

This is not true. The law in Germany is more complicated than that, and in particular it is easy to see that it's legal to sell an MMO with the 5th Column in there, given that in later years that is exactly what happened.

That said, I can well believe that an American company, ill-informed about the German law, would make a snap decision to take them out for issue 3.

How could anyone not see 5th column were modeled after nazi's with Reichsman being their leader?

You do realize there was a reason Nazi Germany was called the 3RD Reich, right?

Reich doesn't imminently stand synonymous with nazism, and I lived a fair slice in Germany, and quite frankly nobody there is going after symbols with Bird wings or anyone promoting the ideal of building a new Reich, because it can mean anything and nothing at the very same instance - so citing that the 5th Column and Nazis both had gray Uniforms and similarly shaped hats, and oooh! Bird wings! Call in the nazi-police! - pretty much amounts to a big pile of pancake-all.

The fact the 5th Column was implemented back in to the game in later issues with Germany not even quirking a brow to it, kinda stands as a testament to this argument being silly and the decision being snap and made by people who were ill informed about German law and not researching it in any greater detail.

Mel Brooks did it too:

It does seem quite common:

But as the previous poster stated, the issue isn't whether the 5th Column was modeled on Nazis, the issue is whether they were glorified as Nazis. Given that they were essentially treated in the game as a repellent and abhorrent fascist group that had to be stamped out for the good of the people of the city, they probably had a lot of leeway to use the imagery.

Oh!  That explains why Bison had a star on his hat in vanilla SF2, rather than the later skull-with-wings emblem for Shadoloo (or Shadowlaw, or Shadlu, or however they're spelling it this week)

I've been away for a few weeks, are there any new developments that Ironwolf isn't sharing on the original post?

As has been mentioned, when there's real news we're all likely going to notice it.  When you came in and there are either 80 "OMG SO EXCITED" or an equal number of "#$^%@&!!!!!!" posts we'll know.

When I wake up in the morning, the first thing I do is reach over to my nightstand, grab my Kindle Fire HDX and check in here.  I keep hoping the first thing I see will be threads that have suddenly jumped 100+ pages overnight.  Then, I'll know it's time to start celebrating.

I check my phone at least 4 times a day. Everytime, without fail, I feel sick to my stomach with nervous anticipation either for amazing news or horrible news.

...Wow, I never thought the context of this discussion would ever allow me to link this...nice.

I'm somewhat concerned about funding for this whole mess, how's that going to work out? Rewatched the post mortem recently, That seemed to be the thing Matt was most concerned about, when asked about his opinion of us retaking the game, or something.

On the old official game forums, the odds of any random internet link becoming relevant to the thread approached 100% as the length of the thread approached infinity.  And some of them did approach it.

I do the same but with an iPad, just waiting is the hardest part but part of the process  ;)

I don't like this site on my phone. I haven't tried it on my tablet, yet, but I just find forums in general to not be mobile-friendly.

As a complete aside, I have a book about game design that features interviews with a LOT of people from all the various fields associated with putting a game together. The book is about 12 years old, so it's pre-WoW and -CoH. I don't remember all of the MMOs that were out at the time, but the book doesn't even call them that. The takeaway, though, is that it calls Everquest "wildly successful" with 430,000 subscribers. That kind of makes me hate WoW a little bit. :)
I wouldn't use the word "replace," but there's no word for "take over for you and make everything better almost immediately," so we just say "replace."

Keep in mind: Compared to most other MMOs, WoW spends a ton of money on advertising. More than any other MMO, I believe.

Keeping mind that WoW is WAAAAYY less fun than CoX, they have to spend loads of cash on adverts.
It takes a village to raise a child. And it takes a villain to explain the value of lunch money.
