For as many times as I've heard this explanation, I've equally heard that it's not true at all.

You know the 5th Column were brought back into the game several years before the shutdown, right?
Yeah, they were back, but I remember places like outside of Wentworth's in Steel Canyon, where they'd both be up on soapboxes on the street outside and it was sometimes difficult to tell them apart.  With the actual 5th Column back, I didn't see why their inferior, generic replacements were still needed.  I thought it was time to send the temps home.

Except the Council have been in the game for a long time now. Storylines have centered* around them. People have created characters with backstories that reference them. Entire supergroups and redside player groups exist that are involved in some way with the Council. Pulling them out now would be just as bad as when the 5th column were unceremoniously yanked, and even then they at least bothered to gave us a flimsy story excuse.

That's exactly the kind of thing that makes me caution any would-be developers against making wholesale changes just because they feel like it, or to make it conform to their personal tastes. A change to something that has been in the game for years should only happen if it can be justified with very good reasons to make the tradeoff.

*no pun intended

Which, again, seriously annoys me - I despise government-mandated censorship, especially when it's brainless censorship.  Did anyone tell them the Nazis were the bad guys?  There must be a huge number of films set in WWII that just can't be shown in Germany, I guess.

they have a long memory that hits very close to home. they took concrete measures to separate themselves from a very dark place in their history. My mother was a little girl in occupied france and has bad memories of that time. it isnt a joke or a talking point for them

"A) CYA for release in Germany. Yes we didn't NEED to go to the extremes that we did, but it made for a great story. (Matt) "

And Yeah, I'm aware. But by that point the game was no longer being marketed in Germany... nor really marketed much at all.

Truth.  I work in a german-owned company based in the heartland of USA.  Using the "N" word around them is a one-way ticket to HR.  Even something common in internet parlance like 'grammar nazi' is a no-no.

And don't think we don't appreciate the efforts you undertook Ironwolf.  We do.

Now, MY ideal world would be to bring the deal closed today....but that's rather unlikely  :'(

Home for Christmas would be great though.

I agree. Thank you, Ironwolf!

Probably the case with many American companies as well.

I think it's time for a topic change as the Nazi stuff seems to be devolving.

Then I'd say we have a different definition of government censorship.  If there is a very real risk that the government will ban your creative work unless you censor it in advance, I believe that qualifies (see also - China).  Alas, I was not in charge of Paragon Studios, or I would have simply said "Well, I guess we won't sell any units in Germany."

Burnt Toast

It was a decision made by Cryptic to do this in order to appeal to the European market...and was completely voluntary on their part. You are making a censorship issue where none existed. Matt Miller has stated numerous times that the change was not something they HAD to do, but something they wanted to do more so out of respect for the European market and not because it was demanded or required. When a company CHOOSES voluntarily to alter their product for commercial purposes in other countries...that is not censorship...it is marketing :)
