Even more than that....it makes no sense at all in that scene.

Geek tme!!!!    :D

For one thing, he didn't shoot Han on sight...that would have been easy if he just planned to kill him.   "Going somewhere, Solo?"

Secondly, Han mentions that Jabba is Greedo's boss.  Does Jabba want a dead body delivered to him?   Jabba didn't even kill Han later in RotJ.   Remember, "He's no good to me dead" from Boba Fett in ETB?

Thirdly, Greedo gives Han the option to give the money to him.  Was he really going to shoot Han and lose that opportunity?

Fourthly, Greedo says, "Tell that to Jabba...he may only take your ship".    Obviously Greedo was planning to take Han to Jabba.

Fifthly, We see a closeup of Han readying his gun not once, but twice.    If that's not a narrative setup, I don't know what is!   :)

The whole "Greedo shot first" thing makes zero sense in context.  Lucas doesn't think things through very well.

The idea of Greedo shooting first does make sense in context. Greedo has been sent to do a retrieval job, but is looking for an excuse to kill Solo (presumably due to an undisclosed personal vendetta between the two). So he starts out asking for the money, but his comments make it clear that he's hoping Solo won't oblige. In particular, after Han says, "Over my dead body," and Greedo responds, "That's the idea," followed by his statement "I've been looking forward to this for a long time," suggest that he was hoping the meeting would happen as it did, and that while he wouldn't have simply shot Han immediately (because he didn't want to risk Jabba finding out that he didn't even try to recover Jabba's cash), he's more than happy to end this with killing him.

The problem with Greedo shooting first is that there's really no way to stage it properly given the footage already in place. The sequence involved two characters sitting less than three feet apart, blaster fire exchanged, and one of them keeling over dead. If Greedo shoots first, he is by definition one of the worst shots ever. :) If Lucas had staged the whole thing with the idea of Greedo shooting first--maybe Han flips over the table to block the shot, and a gunfight happens--it could have worked. But going back to it was a mistake.

(Although I privately think of Han shooting first not as setting up his eventual redemption as setting up his readiness to fight dirty. It perfectly foreshadows him saving the day by shooting Vader in the back.)

So are we getting a Nerf Herder powerset, or has this gone completely offtopic?

New primary for Masterminds.  Allows you to unleash a herd of Nerfs on your enemies.  :)

That can explain why Greedo didn't just shoot Han on sight, but doesn't touch the other stuff.

I would have to assume that Greedo is willing to incur Jabba's anger.  We actually find out that Jabba wants Han alive in ESB.  If Greedo is willing to do that, it diminishes the idea that Jabba is a notorious and feared underworld figure.   And that would also require me to assume Greedo brought up the money for no real reason....if he planned to kill Han then there is no reason to make up something fake for a guy who won't be around anyway.   And I would have to assume Greedo mentioned that Han should talk to Jabba about things for no reason as well....again why bother if Han wasn't going to be around.   And of course I have to wonder why so much trouble was put into setting it all up by showing Han readying his gun.

Ahhh....geekdom...

Don't forget A New Hope did have a gun with a stun setting, it's reasonable to believe Greedo would only be wanting to hurt or stun Han. Doesn't need to be a kill shot - blasters dont tend to disintegrate people like phasers or disruptors do.

That would be ok.  That preserves the "Scoundrel Han" since he then killed a guy who was only going to stun him.

Greedo was *clearly* not going to just stun Han:

---

Greedo:  Una toota, Solo?

Han: Yes, Greedo, as a matter of fact, I was just going to see your boss.  Tell Jabba that I've got the money.

Greedo: Sohm beechalay.  Badahtam tetac bachacheefta.  Jabba wanee chie koch ba *wichanee*, tratani wai na wuska.. heh heh heh heh...  Chaski nawi uchootso.

Han: Yeah, but this time I've *got* the *money*.

Greedo: t'Elchaya kulcah eentis't koniku sua.

Han: I *don't* have it with me... tell Jabba...

Greedo:  Jabba hai nichtnicht.  hehehe... Soh goh rulyeh pu yanyah uhlmans patikah koshukoh upunohma tripee.

Han: Even I get boarded sometimes.  You think I had a choice?

Greedo: T'la Jabba.  Buhmpa kumpachnie a't aal apah.

Han: Over my dead body.

Greedo:  *Oochleh nooma.*  Ches bohku tootah kleesta klrenkoh... *yah oska.*

Han: Yes, I'll bet you have.  *BLAM*

Han gets up... flips a coin to the bartender... "Sorry about the mess." and continues out of the Cantina, like a Bawss

End Scene

The "oochleh nooma" is where Greedo pretty much laid it out: I'mma take you out, biotch.

So yeah.  Han Shot.  No 'first' about it.

/I have to admit, while fun, that typing out of Greedo's lines took way too much time. :p

Obi Wan "Mos Eisley, you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy"

That tells me there is no law in that town at all, and while there were storm troopers there, they were mainly hunting the droids.

The Cantina is a place where bad things happen regularly and the denizens go about their business afterwards, such as when Obi Wan "disarmed" Luke's attackers.

Greedo confronts Han at gun point, they talk and it is clear that the odds of Han walking away from the encounter are slim. He is a scoundrel, Greedo is a bounty hunter that has got the drop on him.  Greedo makes it pretty clear as to what is going to happen to Han.  Han distracts Greedo and blasts him,  self -defense.  The bartender and denizens of the Cantina aren't too upset over what Han did and he no one seeks to stop him as he leaves.

Business as usual in the Mos Eisley cantina, I'd say.   Changing that scene was ill thought on Lucas' part. Now it looks like Han dodges a point blank blast with Jedi-like speed in that scene when Han clearly is NOT a force-user.

Maybe Greedo learned to shoot at the Stormtrooper School for Marksmanship.

Also. . . On the other thread there was a discussion about travel powers. I have always favored a 5th and 6th level to travel powers.

#5:  Map Travel: Click on a spot on the map and Run/Jump/Fly/Teleport to that location automatically, off screen. (Level 25ish)

#6:  Zone/Plane Travel: Choose another zone (That the character has previously been to) and automatically Run/Jump/Fly/Teleport to that zone off screen. (Level 35ish)

Most players will not bother with these powers as they probably would save those slots for other combat powers, but for folks who want them, they would nicely expand the travel power pool at higher levels.

There comes a point when travel between zones becomes something of a grind. Base Teleport Beacons can short cut that, but not everyone is in an SG or has access to a base. Ouroboros and Pocket D offer a few other shortcuts, but not nearly enough to cover every destination. SO once a toon has traveled to those maps or zones and has those travel powers, then he would be able to return to them quickly. Makes some of the TFs a lot more doable!

What they should have done was this:  the portal that takes you from Ouroborus back to the regular zones should have been linked to all the zones and not just a few.  Need to instant travel to a zone? Go into ouroborus and then hit the exit portal and pick any zone.

Cheese is a controller set (see above).

Tarelgeth

Why limit it to just cheese?  Dairy Defender.  Buttermilk speed trap.  Custard recharge boost.  Ice cream headache!

Also, the Dairy Corrupter could have Sour Cream.

Safehouse

If I had a cheese defender I would have to make his signature battle cry be "Hello! Havardi?" or "Ugh crime. I camembert it anymore."
Name: Safehouse     Origin: Magic
Powers: Energy Blast/Electricity Manipulation/Flame Mastery/Teleportation
Security Level: 50+
Status: Inactive
Last Seen: Wandering the empty streets of the evacuated Paragon City.

Actually there's a pretty good argument that the Stormtroopers didn't always miss because they had bad aim, but because Luke and Crew were MEANT to escape. The homing beacon on the Falcon led them to the rebel base, after all. So all part of a plan to find the rebels. Put on a good show and let them betray themselves. And a comment by Obi Wan early on suggests they weren't known for bad aim ( commenting on the blaster patterns on the Jawa transport being too precise for sand people. )
