New efforts!

Prism Almidu

Hello all. First, this is going to be a wall of text, so I'll get this apology out of the way :P Moving on.

I wasn't someone who played since launch. I picked the game up some time after CoV came out, and played on Infinity (it had the coolest name :P) maybe a few months every couple years, as I was a kid without much in the way of income. That was my first account. In 2010/11, after getting a job, I made a new account and subscribed until the sunset announcement. My main, a Rogue Dark/Dark Corruptor, played on Freedom, and managed to fill every available incarnate slot including Hybrid. I was dedicated enough the game that I paid to fly from East Coast to West for the 2012 Pummit. Made a bit of a fool of myself not fleshing out ideas before suggesting a death/gothic themed costume set. Point being, I may not have played for long compared to many of the posters in this thread (and believe me, I read the whole thing in the past couple days), but I was as dedicated to it as any of you. When the closure was announced, I reacted to the grief in a way I'd call poorly, removing any trace of it from my computer... which is now biting me in the rear, since I recently tried to rebuild my main in Mids' lol. The game still had its hooks in me, though since I tried many things in hopes of trying for the same level of customizability, and every few months I'd look for a private server. Guess how successful that was :P. I found this thread a few days ago because of one of those searches, and it is with hope burning through me that I thank everyone involved in the recovery effort for screwing up my mind with thoughts of returning to the Rogue Isles :D. As I've read people's hopes and desires for the relaunch, a few topics have stuck with me. If this is the wrong thread for this sort of thing, direct me to the right one.

1. Account/character data reclamation: I see the perspectives of both sides in this, fresh start vs. keeping everything you've worked towards, purchased, and characters you've grown close to. Not claiming to speak for anyone else, but I would gladly sink more money into this game. My only concern about data is, as others have mentioned, things that were never purchasable, such as the rewards from the loyalty pack that included the Zeus and Tartarus helms, and that Rularuu vanity pet. The only bonus I'd have from keeping characters is not having to redo what was one hell of an effective build lol. Not denigrating anyone's opinion, merely adding mine.

2. CoX2: Merely a hope of mine, but after reading the lore AMA's the most preferable option to me would be to remake CoX, same gameplay, missions, story, on an engine more easily adaptable to additions and improvement than the royal mess the original's is on. Mostly because I was looking forward to the Coming Storm, unlocking the rest of the incarnate slots, and from what the AMA seemed to say, incarnate status would have been the only way to even have a chance of victory against the Battalion :P Plus, I know, again, as mentioned, some of the low level content was, perhaps, overdue for some touchups or revamps. I do like the ideas of multiple other locations around the world, but Paragon, and the Rogue Isles, are, to me, the central locations in that world.

3. Influx: You're damn straight I'll be nagging friends and roommates to play! I met one of my best friends in this game, and even after the game went down, we've stayed in touch, playing other games, despite nothing coming close to this one. In the same vein, apart from this thread and linked ones, I have no desire to cause any noise that might cause this new hope for a return to the only MMO worth sticking with's resurgence to fall through. I'm not actually a part of anything like Facebook or other communities, so no worries there :P

Again, thank you Iron Wolf, and the new devs, for pulling CoX out of its nadir back into the light where it belongs even if my home is in the Isles and not Paragon City :) ... and thanks to the rest of you for putting up with this wall of text :P

Forcemove was far from being useful for such things, and IMO probably would have been scrapped after the first attempt to use it in an actual power. Don't let the name fool you -- all it did was instruct the AI to walk to the forced location, and for players actually sent a message to the client instructing it to lock autofollow on that location, in exactly the way that the click-to-move functionality worked.

About the only thing it could conceivably be useful for is, combined with a movement speed buff, a 'charge' style power. Even that would probably end up looking weird and require reimplementation another way. Biggest problem with doing a charge power that way is there's no way to accurately predict how long it will take to reach the target, so the speed buff would end up lasting too long or too short.
Well bugger. i had a feeling that might be the case, but the few references i'd encountered had left me somewhat hopeful.  :(

QuoteIgnoring forcemove entirely, inverse knockback / attraction is something that wasn't implemented in the engine, but would be trivial to do so, assuming the code was available. I think it's far more likely that if this effort succeeds, it will be maintenance mode only, so I wouldn't expect to see such mechanics on the official servers.
Agreed. Regardless i expect this to be taken into account if/when CoH2 is in development.

Didn't the Omega Bomb from the crab spider have a pull effect or was that just a taunt?
It had a taunt.
So far so good. Onward and upward!

She used to play the game.  She thinks devs made the game too easy by appeasing the whiners when they complained that they couldn't easily get a certain badge or solo a certain mission.

If I can get her account back though, I won't hesitate to start working on some new toons for our son.  Almost 4 years old and a big Iron Man / Batman / Captain America / Spiderman fan.  And if we don't get the accounts back, I'll start work on recreating her best toons and some new guys for my kid :)

Your Mrs. was right for a time. The devs started implementing all sorts of things that made the game easier.
Then things like the Incarnate stuff started coming in and difficulty increased again... Of course, so did characters power. :)
Cogito, Ergo... eh?

MWM has said from the very beginning even if CoH returned they would still work on developing a game.. so has VO.. bottom line.. there a gajillion fantasy genre games.. and kill a zombie games.. and shoot a guy with a gun via first person games.. and they all get made...

Why is it that we can only have ONE super her based game..

They should continue even if CoH comes back in full force, on fire, with rainbows and unicorns flying out of its butt..

I tried once to interest my wife in CoH.

I felt like a three-year-old trying to interest his mother in Dora the Explorer.

LOL! Around here it's the opposite...I'm the one trying different MMOs and dragging hubby into the ones worth playing. He was out of town for 3 months when COH went F2P and trying to get it running on a severely underspec'd laptop because I'd decided "Ehh what the heck" after my sister told me about it.

She played about 10 min (couldn't afford to resub or unlock her MM) and basically requit, I stayed with it and as soon as he got home he picked it up and stayed with it to the end too.

Out of touch for a few days, and look how much I've missed!  First, sincere congrats, Ironwulf, for the new grandbaby, and hopes that your daughter and grandbaby continue doing great.

Second, my continuing thanks for all the work you've done to get the ball rolling on another attempt to buy the game, and the news you've been able to share, which has given fresh hope to so many of us.  Seriously, many, many thanks to you, and the team working on buying back the game.

Fable

Oh, I can remember trying to get my wife to play. Once I got her to make a toon and got her to sit in the tutorial and play with emotes but that's as far as I could get. Only other game she'd play was Mario Party.. She's just not a gamer  :'( I tried sooo many times. She always whining about spending more time together, but of course, only doing stuff that interests her.

My partner and I were going to "share"... after month three we scrapped together money to buy a second desktop and pay for an account.  There is no "sharing" a COH account because it is more fun to play together.

The missus and I play pretty much every game together, CoX, TSW, LoL, MUA, Spyro, etc... If you can't co-op, we won't touch it.

But fun fact I always kept noticing in every relationship: My SO's always spent roughly six hours in character creation for their first character.

We tried this as well the few times we couldn't pay for both accounts for any  reason. Aside from it being hard to pick which account gets activated, ended up taking turns, I usually felt bad while playing cause I know she wants to play too.

We met on CoH as well, haven't found any game nearly as enjoyable to play together.

Burnt Toast

When I saw the tv commercial (yep tv commercial  http://youtu.be/SNNFoKpEkVg) for CoH at the end of 2004... I went to WalMart and grabbed the dvd copy of the game. I got home...went to install it on my computer and realized it was dvds... I didn't have a dvd player on my computer. Lemme state this.... I had never played an MMO..I had never installed any games on my pc... I was a complete noob.

So my husband installed it on his pc. Once we got it installed on his computer...he left me to do it...he came back about an hour later and i was JUST entering the tutorial...damn costume creator with all it's options. My VERY first toon... an ice/ice blaster named Frigidaire U. Once I got into the game I had no clue how to do anything and he had to show me the basics... he sat nearby while I played the first hour or so. Then he went to WalMart and got the CD version of the game...came home...and installed it on my computer. My computer at the time had the minimum specs for CoH...so if he wasn't playing on his computer (which was rare) I would play on his for the better graphics.

After the first month...I got a new computer and so did he so we could enjoy CoH at it's highest specifications and have great frame rates etc etc...

We played mainly together for the first 9 months...then we started making more friends separately from PUGs that we would join when the other wasn't home. In March 2006... I discovered that my husband was cheating on me with a fellow CoH player.... and we got divorced.

I continued to play CoH until the very last day...never letting my original...or alt accounts lapse from VIP status. My now... ex-husband played for a few months after we split and I did see him once in 2010 as well.

I am actually grateful that I/we started CoH because while I thought my ex had cheated on me before online...I never really had proof until he did it with a fellow CoH player.

All these "I met my husband/wife" stories always makes me giggle because my case is the exact opposite. Trust me though... I couldn't be happier now that I am no longer married...my ex-husband was lazy, a liar, and messy...but I thought "Well at least we love one another" and dealt with his numerous faults LOL.  So thank you CoH for opening my eyes and setting me free of what was one of the biggest mistakes in my life...my ex-husband :)

And if you help spread this sort of rumor around, do so knowing that you could be hurting the negotiations more than anybody. I hope that doesn't come off argumentative or rude.

Let me make this absolutely crystal clear [again]: I am not on FB. I am not on Twitter. As such, I am basically unable to discuss this or anything much on "social media." I avoid social media like the plague, if only because my workplace DOES monitor all employees that they know are on it. I have no intention of being fired for some slip of the lip. Not happening.

So you are safe from me discussing this subject, or any subject on "social media." I AM NOT ON FB OR TWITTER. Or any such discussion platform.

Not to mention, the idea that NCSoft might not have the game backed up much - or at all - does not give you a frisson of fear? It certainly does me. I find the idea terrifying, and I see no reason to apologize for that.

QuoteBut by all means, let's continue to talk about it on this public forum with 24,000 members.

Better here than just about anywhere else, n'est-ce pas? Beside, by the time anything gets to me I assure you it is very much old news.

I'm very excited to hear about what's going on with NCSoft negotiations right now.  My wife is chagrined at the prospect of becoming a CoH widow again.

My husband is very much giving the news that the game might return, the side-eye over this very issue.

Evening folks, new guy here.  Joined CoH right after Issue 2 and stayed with it to the end with a few hiatus here and there.

Lupur

I've been keeping an eye on this thread, and any other CoH news i can get my little mitts on.

Just wanted to chime in on the KB / team makeup discussion from last couple of pages.

I never really had any 'Standard' toons, mine were all unique and hillarious for various reasons. My main 4, which were remade several times, and essentially Uber in their roles, would occasionally also get kicked from teams.

Lupur - Brute - EM / Reg - die during atack animation every 3-4 mobs for stealing aggro from Tankers due to massive spike damage. Res, activate 3-4 toggles, keep going. Could perma-stun Noctis. Kicked for dying alot.

Lupurus - Tanker - StJ / WP - never lost aggro, had ~47% positionals and ~87% res all (cept toxic and a couple others), but couldnt deal enough damage to kill +2 bosses, even with full incarnate. Could unbuffed tank all TF / SF, and most maybe all incarnate content, cant remember. Kicked for not doing enough damage.

Lupura - Corruptor - Dark / Dark - had 4 cones that KB / KD - used to run ahead of groups and pile 2 - 3 enemy groups on top of tar pit, hover above and ragdoll em to death. Kicked for not having high single target damage, or not having any team buffs.

Lupurion - Huntsman / Grenadier - Double leadership, Perma Bots, all that epic debuff / buff sillyness. Kicked for either being lazy (fragile end, if i use more than 1 nade every 1.5 sec, i run dry) or KB cause 1 or 2 enemies didnt get caught by web, but kb from frag, or not having enough DPS, cause VeaT's are all about dps ..

Yes, I did PUG often, just to see what reaction people give me.

Seriously, anyone tried EM / REG brute? it is hella fun   ;D
