Someone once accused me of secretly being in the employ of NCsoft and stepping up and posting about Save CoH and everything in a deliberate effort to distract the community and give them some outlet so that they wouldn't show up at the Seattle (or even Seoul) office with torches and pitchforks in hand to do any real damage.

Maybe not a plot of Nemesis proportions, but I was amused at the thought. (And in case you're wondering... No, not even remotely.)

Mate, based on the people I call my friends through social media, I've been so far as demanded why I haven't ALLOWED the sale of the CoH IP.

What was so wrong with say a fire tank aggro'ing the entire map & AoE'ing everything while inside the dumpster?  Who was being harmed by that & why?

Well, I couldn't tell you what the devs were thinking when they changed this, but I can tell you at least one thing that I read about on the CoH forums and to a limited degree, chats on LB, Liberty's primary chat channel. The basic argument was, "If a fire tank can tackle the whole map, what do they need (enter your non-tank AT here)for? And, to a degree, I had to understand where they were coming from. I had a Fire/Stone tank, loved doing that very same thing on the Dreck map. LOVED IT! And then realized that Fire/Fire would be even better so I made one of those. And it was better, but not by much. Even though the primary builds were the same, the survivability wasn't quite the same - I think Tremor did a little more mitigation, not to mention the stuns from some of the stone punches. But anyway - at that time, and I think it was true throughout the game, If I was solo and clobbered a Freak, I'd get about 1700 inf. (I really cannot remember). But, if I had a defender on my team, I'd get half of that. (I'm guessing again, it's been so long. Making me feel old, lol) Certainly, I remember it being much less than when I was solo.

So, for me, there was never a compelling reason to team up - and with fire tanks being the flavor of the month, so to speak, I think the devs had a choice. Rework the xp system (I think they did give more xp for larger teams on the mission completion bonus eventually) or adjust Burn - by suggesting that no self-respecting villain is going to just stand there in the midst of flames - they're going to run away. So, they put a fear factor in fire, and also changed the duration, or the ticks of damage. Not super clear on that, as I left the game shortly after, that one change being a part of it.

So, I agree with the position of "Why change it, who's it hurting?", but I can understand why it was changed. To be fair, there was more teaming (lol, I teamed more once I couldn't pin down the minions to burn them) so at least one small voice in the minority of CoH was appeased. Although, fire tanks became a very rarely played powerset once the burn nerf came out. So thankful for issue 18! (I think that's when they undid the nerf)

I really don't care for PvP myself.  My experience of it in CoX was ruined by the original Stalkers.  One-shot kills (then nearly-one-shot kills mixed with a mez followed immediately by a low-powered attack = hospital time). Oh, and griefer groups who nail you right as you come out of the hospital.
Those were the days ;D  I am guilty of having one of those one hit pvp stalkers ...Never was fond of the griefers though.  Spirit Shark helped a lot post nerf!!

According to ParagonWiki, Original Blaster Defiance was in effect from Issue 5 (Aug 31, 2005) thru Dec 11, 2007.

I guess the Devs didn't like the "Bouncing Blaster" Damage Booster trick much.  Nothing like jumping off of a roof, landing in the middle of a large mob with 1 HP left, and letting loose with your Nova. heh.

I have to admit I always enjoyed the replacement ability, low level power blasting even while held/mezzed.

Congratulations on the running longest con in history! You must be making a fortune.

The "re-imagined" defiance was a beautiful thing. I'd get to punch that Madness Mage in the face a few times before faceplanting :D

Pretty cool that we're going to hit page 400 before August hits... ;)

On the Defender side of things, I can't tell you how happy I was when Vigilance got a damage buff in I17.

We could probably milk the "W00t! 400 pages" posts until page 500

Well that's to be expected. The first hundred pages of so were hopeful posts, then folks started reminiscing about the game and began thinking about character builds, then some people got bored and went off topic, and then people realized the entire thread was a Nemesis plot.

Dude, after I made my "I'll Be Home for Christmas" video, I got several angry emails accusing me of having my very own private server (because apparently that was the only way I could film) and pitching an absolute FIT for not inviting them to play on it. Half of them were furious for me not telling the community I'd saved the game from NCsoft, and half of them were furious for not making the code public so everyone could open-source work on it.

My only (repeated) reply was "Demorecording" and a link to that page in the Paragon Wiki.

It's nice to see this game get so much love still. My brother and I still talk about it constantly. Beyond that I check this thread daily.

Quote from: LaughingAlex on July 31, 2014, 02:47:38 AMCO is horribly, horribly imbalanced.  It has almost no freedom, I feel, because of it yet people ask for more nerfs or even say x or y is fine when it plain sucks and very clearly sucks in terms of BOTH the numbers AND in terms of function.  It's a joke to say CO has freedom because of that.  It's freeform system would have it if powers had a standard to go by but they do not.  Your either severely out-performed and even find enemies harder then they are supposed to be by design or you do ludicrously well with nothing in between, :/.

I wasn't saying having alot of freedom was a bad thing, I was saying CO in reality has no freedom.

Edit: No, I don't want CO getting shut down but I do fear that.  I already spoke about it a long while ago.

Another Edit: What i'm saying is that, the imbalances of the game are severely counter-productive to the whole point of the freeform system.

Yes, this.  Worse, the forums there are toxic for just such discussion.  I tried to explain that I thought the game needed multiple self-heals that were all equally effective, rather than one self-heal that I felt was so much better than all the others to render it pointless to take any one but that one, regardless of whether that one self-heal (Resurgence, a "Bestial Supernatural" power) fit my character's concept or not.

The more I tried to explain why "one heal that works and two that don't" is not a real choice (compared to "multiple heals that all work equally well, but have different secondary effects"), the more they responded with "Having three powers that do different things is still a choice, even if two of them suck! :D :D :D :D" (yes, including the multiple laughing-at-you smiley-faces) and finally with giant pictures of laughing My Little Ponies and arguing "having powers that are all equally effective is stupid and not a choice at all!"

They also didn't understand what I meant by "lack of variety" in playstyles (using the example that, if I wanted to make an all-fire character in CoH, then I can make a character of almost any class and playstyle - Masterminds didn't really have a "fire" primary, though Demons came close, and Stalkers had no fire powers at all, but all the rest had Fire options in their primary and secondaries; but if I wanted to make an all-fire character in CO, there's no real variety: it's ranged attacker or nothing).  Usually their response to that was to not reply at all.

Futur3

Ugh, that's beyond frustrating! One of the many reasons CO will never fill the void in my heart left when COH closed.... :'(

I very rarely comment as I am normally a full time lurker and check this topic every day, but I just wanted to say to the NCSoft guy with the pen:

It's my birthday today, so, like ... y'know ... it would be nice and all ... you get what I'm saying. And by the way, I rarely go on Facebook, so it wasn't me.

Thank you to Ironwolf for updates and always to TonyV for giving the community a place to go.
