read this and the B-52 song"Happy Shining People"popped in my head( AND I HATE THE B-52'S)

That is R.E.M that sang that song

CoyoteSeven

He hates the B-52's and can't tell them apart between themselves and R.E.M.? He's dead to me.

kierthos

To be fair, Kate Pierson of the B-52s did sing on that song, and was in the music video.

I'm guilty of saying unkind things about NCSoft in the past as well.  Having learned more about the underlying story of the shutdown from this thread, I regret what I said in anger.

It's easy to hate a faceless entity.  Not particularly good for us in the long term, since hate is kind of a useless emotion/path to the dark side, but easy.

What I've come to realize over the course of this thread is that the "faceless entity" of NCSoft really isn't that meaningful a target.  The company will make the decisions the company needs to make.  We - I - need to keep in mind that what matters is finding the living human beings who work within NCSoft, and considering how they feel about what's going on.  That's what IronWolf and the team have managed to do:  Find the person/people within NCSoft who care about the game like we do, and are willing to work with the larger entity to get it released back into the wild.

Companies don't care about the same things individual employees do, or to the extent that they do, it's not the same kind of "caring."  I don't know how many people at NCSoft are truly invested in moving this process forward, whether it's one or a hundred, but it's those people and their reactions that we have to be cautious of.  NCSoft will do what is right from a business sense; the individuals will do what they think is right at least in part based on their feelings.  It's human nature, and as we've seen from IronWolf, it only takes one person who believes to get this process going.

I appreciate those folks at NCSoft who have made the time to talk with the team about the potential purchase.  They are almost undoubtedly taking on some level of personal career risk by putting their necks out for a property that, for a variety of reasons, probably gave their employer a PR "black eye" less than two years ago.  And I appreciate the folks higher up the corporate ladder who are considering the possibility of the sale.  It is my sincere hope that the passion of a community like ours will ultimately be viewed as a positive thing by those responsible for making the decision.

This is a highly intelligent post.

Isn't that an REM song, featuring the lady from the B 52s...?

Yeah, I don't think that's an entirely logical point of view.  How are you gonna attract new players to the game to keep CoH2 afloat if you can't innovate and change things?!  Personally, I feel as though some of the earliest power sets were a bit boring... especially the melee ones.  That is doubly true when your melee character has a passive defensive set where you just set it and forget.  Some of the later sets had unique flavor to them that made you actually pay attention a little to what buttons you pushed: Staff, Dual Blades, Titan Weapons, etc.

Also, they did a great job with Bio Armor in making it have a form that was more offensive and a form that was more defensive.  It was almost like going from Brute, to Tank to Scrapper all in one secondary.

I know this is from about a dozen pages back, but I felt the need to add my two cents. I seem to recall the devs pointing out that all new power sets going forward would try to have some kind of unique "gimmick" as it were to make each one feel unique and special. Water Blast had tidal force, Titan Weapons had momentum, Staff had forms, even Dual Blades (which I honestly consider an old set from the time frame of the end of the game) had combos. Then we got Bio Armor that was a unique and fun armor set, Radiation armor was coming which looked to be a mix of resist, defense, self res and debuff auras so it was a little bit of everything. In comparison the old sets did seem a bit bland, but you could also look at it as simply being base-line powers. Fire/Ice/Energy blast are just basic powers and didn't require any big strategy beyond blowing stuff up, but using a Beam Rifle allowed and almost required understanding of how to disintegrate people.

I want to say that there were rumblings of old powersets being given a once-over to introduce some new mechanics to them so they were more interesting, but I can't say 100% that I was correct. I definitely like the idea of having some kind of charge mechanic for the blast sets that would build up as you used basic powers and when you reached a certain stack you could use higher end powers to achieve a special effect (Big damage boost for Fire, Huge endurance drain for Electricity, Disorient for Energy, etc.), though I'd be at a loss for what to do with Melee sets honestly.

Either way, once we have the game in new hands, if COH2 is to be, then I think it would serve the new team well to try and port over the power sets, but try and spruce up the older ones. Give Broadsword some bleeding damage, make Mace disorient/slow enemies, just generally give them a fresh coat of paint so they don't seem quite so generic compared to new sets, just don't go overboard and make them into something else entirely. The important thing is the feel and spirit of the game.

Upgrades to Super Strength could involve increased knockback/knockdown, maybe some -res as armor/shells/etc crack under the pounding.  Maybe some build up like in the ranged sets as you described so you have a real knockout blow.  Claws could get some bleed, maybe even something like a slow as the wounds hamper movement.

My concern would be if adding / strengthening the special effects makes these powers to strong compared to others, and if so that would require a lowering of damage, which would impact usefulness against effect resistant foes and prolong fights. Then everything goes a bit haywire as the devs try to force it back into balance and at the end of things the power has lost its feel, upsetting people who use it regularly. That's why in a lot of ways it might be best to keep the classic powers more or less unchanged.

I have to say, either the FB groups have got a lid on things, or I'm looking at the wrong groups.  The ones I follow have mostly been having memory-fests about things they loved in the game, or things they'd love to see in CoH2.  Btw, New Guys, my one big shiny wish is that if you change anything in the old game, fix the bases.  I'd really like that.

In other news, I'm going to tell my family we're having beef ingot for supper tomorrow night.

Well, if you don't want to be thought of in a negative light that you might not want to use words like "hugbox-y."

You just made his point.

I like the tern "hugbox-y", it fits with the rose-colored lenses that the CoH community wears.

Lately i haven't seen much about anything but the successor games and reminiscing about old characters and asking if any old characters moved on to new worlds when the city went dark on the CoH Facebook groups i belong to...

Well using words like "hugbox" makes me think of him in a silly light considering it's a pretty absurd term i haven't heard or seen before. "Carebear" i've heard of, but not "hugbox". Maybe it's a MOBA or FPS term? Regardless it's goofy and silly and pointless in a way that "carebear" wishes it could be. "Hugbox. Hugbox. Hugbox. Hugbox. Hugbox." It gets sillier, and possibly vaguely inappropriate, the more i use it.
So far so good. Onward and upward!

I come back from the cinema to see a Twitter notification subtly hinting about this new deal and linking this thread and I spent the last couple hours getting caught up. Quite the verbal & emotional rollercoaster. I pretty much dropped all hope of the game seeing life again about a year ago and stopped frequenting this site well before that. So, hello all you wonderful people that likely don't remember me.  ;)

I confess that I was one of the people those couple years ago that had nothing nice to say about NCsoft for what happened and I am happy to say that I no longer indulge in such behavior. I wouldn't say they're back on my Christmas list but I'm curious to see what kind of hand they show in these current dealings. Regardless of the outcome, I have nothing bad to say about them anymore. It's been a long time now, a person can't stay mad forever. Whatever happens, happens... but fingers crossed there's a happy ending to this. Potential future developers, do your best and keep your cool. You have our support 100%. :)

One other thing I want to say is that ever since the game went down, no joke, I have had recurring dreams about it. Sometimes more sporadic but they've always come back in some form since the shutdown. They've been dreams of playing again, dreams of being in it looking through the eyes of my hero, even dreams of new content. I don't so much want that to sound like it's pathetic or anything but just an indication of the kind of lasting impression CoH made on me from my 7 years with it. I'm sure many of you can relate to that in some way... maybe playing another game or watching a movie and suddenly getting an idea for a new character to go make? I do that all the time still. I have quite literally not played another MMO for 2 years. I don't see the point, I know they're not going to let me accomplish the same results as CoH did. CO gets pretty close but the gameplay just isn't that great.

I don't really have a good "go home" line to end this rambling, just felt I needed to share these things with a community I've been very much disconnected from for the last 2 years.

There are even more scurrilous sites out there encouraging all manner of deviant, criminal behavior. I don't like this. I wish I could make them stop. If I ever see it IRL I WILL stop it - one way or another, even if that just means a well-timed call to 911. But this is the Internet, and I can't police the whole thing. Hell, the NSA cant even police it, much less me.

I'm sure your right, heck I know you are.

But I guess I'll keep tilting at windmills, it's just my nature. I just wish I had a Poncho to help out or a Rocinante to offer a favor! Like someone said "The only causes worth fighting for are lost causes."
