Amen to that.  I've tried NW, GW2, and Wildstar beta.  The twitchy style of combat, where you constantly have to dodge red patches seems to
be the "in thing" now.  I absolutely hate it.

COH2 needs to be COH with upgraded graphics, period.  Leave the combat system and powersets as is.

Exactly... You know why? Because more options is better. If people like that system of combat, then they have the option to play them.

If we want to play the CoH system of combat, we have...umm....nothing--at least until they can bring our game back.

That's what I'd like... I'm sort of afraid that the basic game mechanics would change, which would change the whole feel of the game. The "feel" of CoH is something I haven't been able to get in any other game since.

I'd love for CoH to get "ported" (in a manner of speaking--not in the same sense that console games get ported to the PC) to an engine that's manageable and able to be expanded upon. What I DON'T want to happen is what happens with some sequels/games when a developer decides to add "features" that change how the game is played. A great example of this is Mass Effect 1 to Mass Effect 2... The entire control scheme was changed. It had a different feel to it, and everyone had to "re-learn" how to play it.

This. Alot of people seem to assume moving to a new engine automatically means different playstyle.
An good engine is just a canvas. It's up to the development team to paint what's on the canvas.

I can't really imagine that anyone who's a diehard enough fan to go through all this is going to sit there and go "Man, We should change how it plays!" ...They'd prolly just go play CO instead. -shrugs-
I suppose I can't really speak for anyone else...But I wouldn't change it.

I feel like all these new "twitch" mechanics (block/charge-up/roll) are mechanics that appeal to an age 13-25 core audience...

CoH has an age 25-65 core audience (at least in my experience on Freedom). It has game mechanics that are better for a gaming audience that doesn't prefer "split-second" timing.

I thought my Catchup post would help but it seems to have made things worse. I was as clear as I could be, but obviously missed the mark. Sorry about that.

Quote - The store is EESSENTIAL to relaunching/further developing the game.  Stores are the MMO model now, it's what makes a game money, not subs.  Subs may keep the lights on but the microtransactions of a store are what pays everything else.  And CoH's store actually nailed it right fairly out of the gate- every single thing on there was cool but in no way required for game play at any level.  I can't stand stores that are nothing but lockboxes and keys.... that is a true moneysink. - endquote

Respectfully, i would disagree with this. CoX was running fine for a very long time without additional revenue from microtransactions. It is my belief that the main reason that CoX implemented this system is that everyone else was doing it - not because it was required to continue developing the game. Likely the money ended up as larger profits or just narrowing the margin with competitors.

I'm not totally against this system, i'm just wary that it will always be 'the thin end of the wedge'. Firm control would be needed to stop a microtransactions based market from edging into areas that CoX players would really not like.

That is certainly what I want out of it. To me the ideal CoH2 would have (baseline) all the same rules, playstyles, costume parts, options, locations, etc. It would be driven by a new engine and take advantage of newer world texture / particle options (so, water works more like water, marble looks more like marble, trees cast "real" shadows rather then have sculpted mystery shadow on the side of the dam, etc), but the skyline would be the same. Character meshes would be upgraded to have more slider control and better motion (and fingers maybe), but still start with and have all the current setting ranges available. Costume parts would be upgraded to have better detailing (where required) and more color channels (in general).

Basically I want a remake, not a reboot/sequel...

**EXACTLY**.  I strongly feel - and I think I am not alone, that most *mechanical* improvements to CoX wouldn't be. (Improvements, that is.)

A couple things about a potential CoH 2:

I would be just fine with a jump in time for the story. If CoH gets stuck at I24, I would want CoH2 to be a little bit ahead, with the Battalion having come and gone, so that a new set of heroes could be the signature heroes, and there's some sort of explanation for why CoH characters aren't all in that game. Some would carry over, sure, but doing the exact same game, with the exact same stories, would be a downer for me.

As far as mechanics go... I think it's key to look at the evolution of power sets in CoH. If you look at the later power sets, they had some pretty different mechanics from the beginning of the game. Dual Pistols had ammo, Water Blast had "tidal power", Dual Blades had combos... these are innovative things that went beyond the normal feel of power sets, which was basically "a bunch of powers that do damage." Building up momentum in a Titan Weapon is completely different from hacking away at a guy with a Battle Axe. So when people are dead set against changing the gameplay style or mechanics of CoH, I have to wonder if they like sets like Dual Blades or Staff Fighting, which were so different from "standard" power sets. And even if you do like the cool new sets, saying that any change to gameplay is terrible would limit more innovative sets like them being created.

People are excited. They have no outlet except to post here and hang out with people who are also just as excited.

Your post was fine - it is just the waiting gets us all on edge. Some people deal with anxiety in different ways - they get angry, giddy, go quiet, get defensive or any gamut of human emotions. Just don't take it personal and understand this is just people being excited to get the game back.

I had that happen to me twice. Each the female character was asked out on a date, I replied, "Sure! Is it OK for me to bring my penis along?"

While this may be partially true, let's be real. The game is really old. There has been speculation that CoH was still turning somewhat of a profit even when it was shut down, but there were reasons NCSoft shut it down, and I believe it was because it wasn't turning enough of a profit.

Personally, as a huuuuuuuuuuge fan of the game, even I have to admit that the population of the game when it was shut down was not near what it was when it launched. That means a loss of sub money--which means the devs have to make up their salaries somehow...or fire people.

I think they opted for the former when it came to the store.

microc

they already have a good story line for coh2. (evil owner of ncsoft pulled the plug on the game server killing all heroes of coh...these new heroes rise up on a free server to save the citizens of Connecticut. (due to ncsoft pulling the plug the state of ri ended up in a black hole.).

I wouldn't mind them adding a bunch of new powersets and/or ATs with CoH2.  In fact, I'd kind of expect it.  Keep all the elements of CoH/V and add MOAR while they're making it shinier.

Edit:  YAY title!  Thanks!
