I, personally, will be trumpeting it in CO on the CoX chat channel, which also reaches STO and NW, and in CO's Zone chat (like CoX's Broadcast).

....and CO will become a ghost town once more, on the day Open Beta starts.  ;D

MorphOS??? That's just AROS on steroids. You've gotta be kidding! Amiga OS 4 is the successor to the real Amiga lineage.

(No actually I don't care. It just felt interesting if an Amiga purist flame war could ignite in a CoH related forum, lol.)
*laughs* Us Miggy fans have to stick together, except when we're ripping each other to shreds over everything from CPU family to OS design.

CC takes great care of us  ;)

A little surprised that the usual suspects of our SG haven't popped in to see whats going on.  I dunno, it *is* July, mebbe everyone is on vacation?

CC and the rest of us Fusion Force regulars were mostly on the Triumph server, a quiet little server but adorable in its smallness.

I'm keeping an eye on things here, Umber, though before the closing I considered myself more of a Wild Card than a Fusioneer.  I just haven't had much to say other than "Please let this all work out just right so we can get our home back."

Old-school COH at launch, each dbserver (which does basically nothing except track and save character records) was likely on a different physical machine, or possibly a pair. The mapservers, which do 99% of the processing required to run the game, have always acted as a pool. They are not tied to a particular shard. It would be easy for Freedom's Atlas Park to be running on the same physical server as Justice's Mercy Island, along with a dozen missions for people on Champion, Pinnacle, etc. Mission maps especially start up and stop often, so the dynamic allocation of resources helps balance the load.

Post-freedom, they got rid of the coastal datacenters and moved them all (including the EU shards) to new servers in NCSoft's Austin facility. At that point, instead of having two separate pools of mapservers, they consolidated it down to one. Judicious use of netstat to document IP addresses revealed that there were somewhere in the neighborhood of 40 physical map servers running the entire game. IIRC one of the devs mentioned they were blade servers, but that doesn't make much of a difference to anything other than rack density.

We also know from developer remarks that at the same time, the dbservers were virtualized, so they no longer needed a physical machine for each, instead running as virtual OS instance on a cluster with fewer physical servers. It's likely the global services (chat, authentication, auction) were virtualized as well, probably on the same cluster. It wouldn't make much sense to virtualize mapservers as due to how they operate as a pool anyway, there would be no benefit to it.

In any event, the bulk of the server resources needed are on the mapserver side, and those are shared across all shards. The number of shards would affect the load only slightly in that kind of setup.

I find this stuff so interesting, I can't wait to start my CS degree and understand it all a bit better. I wonder if this is what Cryptic does now for STO, CO, and NW cause me and my friends have always gotten the impression they lumped all three games on one server (they share the same global chat system, if one breaks down all three usually do, one can't be updated without the other two going down too, ect.)
Please don't send blind requests in games to me, I learned to ignore them in CoX, no offense meant. (this is only here until I can figure out how to put it in my actual profile on here.)

Whats left of CO's community but about 50% CoX players just barely hanging in there?  I don't think it'll just be a ghost town once more, more like a server about to be shut down.  Honestly rather it not be shut down so the CO trolls stay in CO though.  Don't want the nerf-nazi'sheads coming from CO to CoX.
Currently; Not doing any streaming, found myself with less time available recently.  Still playing starbound periodically, though I am thinking of trying other games.  Don't tell me to play mmohtg's though please :).  Getting back into participating in VO and the successors again to.

Virtue was geared to Awesome. Mature player-base and RP not necessary.

Guardian: "LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEROOOOOOOY JEEEEENKIINS!" *TF is now hopelessly borked, thanks Leeroy.*

Freedom: "Yeah really, well UR MOM!" and this was the Freedom version of witty banter. Ugh.

Infinity: "Don't bother coming here unless you know someone, 'cause this server is comprised of several cliques and if you aint in one, you're not teaming here." [I do miss HRoT, though. It was like an MMO version of WWF.  8) ]

Well to be fair for Infinity, you only had to get into one clique, chat channel or sg/vg and then BAM you found all the active players. All of them. Because there was a whole lot of cross-over between the active groups.

Infinity was my home base but I like server hopping for the different flavors of teaming and playing. I'll be happy with whatever we get for if/when the game comes back but I'd really like to keep the old servers at the very least...cause, well...Infinity had its own flavor. And no offense to the other servers but it was never the same elsewhere.

From face-planted teammate: "No rush on the awaken. I never realized how soothing the pattern on this carpet was before."

I remember, oh, shortly after launch.  Was running the final mission of the Bonefire arc on my first character (my Fire/Fire blaster, Solari) with a pickup group of three other people.  The four of us stumbled onto one of the named bosses, his minions and lieutenants and, by, did we wipe hard.  As each of us fell trying to backpedal away, our corpses landed in a straight line, face-to-buttocks with each other.   :-[  As we lay there bemoaning our fates, I borrowed a line from Ben Grimm, the ever-loving, blue-eyed Thing and quipped "What a revolting development!"  The laughter flowed; we popped our Awakens, rested and returned to the fight.  It was the first really awesome memory of my 8+ year CoH experience.

Don't suppose you remember that "Iwin" hoax that ran rampant for a while? I'll admit I've kind of had the same feelings about this here.

Ummm actually... I dispute it.
Ascendant was a roleplayer, and even though I do agree with immortalizing him, it wouldn't have fit in to the character concept for him to join the Phalanx.
Someone else suggested that he should randomly fly up to train stations and use the phones, delivering his skits - which I fully support.

I don't think it'd be too far off for him, you do remember he appeared in one of the last official comic books, helping the Phalanx work on a project with Castle and one other character/player? Could easily say they considered recruiting him from that moment on.

I commented to a team, after dying in a cave yet again, that my character was spending so much time face-down on rock as to become a geology expert.

We should also keep in mind that a lot of the dedicated members will be bringing in their friends. I have at least three friends who never played CoX, and I will make them play. Even if I weren't going to force them to play, I'm sure I've been ranting and raving about this game long enough for them to be curious to try it at relaunch.

I hear that. I start gathering my former SG together yesterday and some friends we'd like to join us anew. I even showed off the game with Skype and ICON, and they couldn't be more excited.

Given your name, I'd bet big money that it's the Greek letter psi.

Freedom I can understand...But Virtue?   I started out on Champion then moved to Virtue and made it my home.  Was it perhaps it was more geared to RPers?

I had nothing against Virtue in general, and I certainly have no problem with RP or RPers.  It was simply that Virtue was heavily populated which made it harder to be left alone, even on Hide.  Also, whenever there was a big event, Freedom and Virtue were almost guaranteed to be red, or even greyed-out, from crowding.  I just preferred more breathing room.

Once saw a fellow running a costume contest under Atlas statue.  Huge shape, pink and purple tights, delicate fairy wings.  The term Fairy Wings on a Cement Truck came to mind.

That. . . might, might, MIGHT have been me.  Pretty sure I had that setup once.  I held a lot of costume contests.  Was it on Justice, by chance, and how tall/short was the toon?
